Lennon Remembers, an extended transcript of the legendary 1970 interview between Rolling Stone magazine's Jann Wenner and John Lennon reveals this process at its most painful, angry and bitter.
Now re-edited to incorporate previously deleted passages (many of which consist of less-than-vital comments from Lennon's then-permanent companion Yoko Ono), Lennon Remembers sees the 30-year-old ex-Beatle determinedly shattering what he saw as the "myth" of his former group. From their clean-cut image ("[our tours] were like Fellini's Satyricon"), to the reasons for their split ("We were fed up of being sidemen for Paul"), and revelations of his drug abuse ("We were full of junk"), Lennon's anger burns from every page.
While undeniably entertaining, the force of Lennon's claims can also make uncomfortable reading. As Yoko Ono herself notes in her introduction, Wenner's interview sees an insecure Lennon, hitting back "and doing a bad job of it". Indeed, his bitterness and anger often leads to personal attacks on such former friends as Brian Epstein, George Harrison and, most hurtfully, Paul McCartney, that are almost unforgivably cruel. However, throughout there remain hints of an abiding respect for his former musical and personal partners. Indeed hints of the old-gang mentality are revealed as he comments at one stage, "I can knock The Beatles"--his implication that others should have more respect suggesting a pride in the group's achievements that is elsewhere buried beneath the weight of bitter reminiscence.
Thankfully, however, despite his tirade, Lennon's humour and humanity is never far from the surface, and it is this that makes Wenner's interview such an ultimately rewarding read. Lennon Remembers is recommended to all, not least as a revealing accompaniment to the more sanitised version of events given in the group's own "autobiography", The Beatles Anthology. --Steve Price [via]

Lennon Remembers, an extended transcript of the legendary 1970 interview between Rolling Stone magazine's Jann Wenner and John Lennon reveals this process at its most painful, angry and bitter.
Now re-edited to incorporate previously deleted passages (many of which consist of less-than-vital comments from Lennon's then-permanent companion Yoko Ono), Lennon Remembers sees the 30-year-old ex-Beatle determinedly shattering what he saw as the "myth" of his former group. From their clean-cut image ("[our tours] were like Fellini's Satyricon"), to the reasons for their split ("We were fed up of being sidemen for Paul"), and revelations of his drug abuse ("We were full of junk"), Lennon's anger burns from every page.
While undeniably entertaining, the force of Lennon's claims can also make uncomfortable reading. As Yoko Ono herself notes in her introduction, Wenner's interview sees an insecure Lennon, hitting back "and doing a bad job of it". Indeed, his bitterness and anger often leads to personal attacks on such former friends as Brian Epstein, George Harrison and, most hurtfully, Paul McCartney, that are almost unforgivably cruel. However, throughout there remain hints of an abiding respect for his former musical and personal partners. Indeed hints of the old-gang mentality are revealed as he comments at one stage, "I can knock The Beatles"--his implication that others should have more respect suggesting a pride in the group's achievements that is elsewhere buried beneath the weight of bitter reminiscence.
Thankfully, however, despite his tirade, Lennon's humour and humanity is never far from the surface, and it is this that makes Wenner's interview such an ultimately rewarding read. Lennon Remembers is recommended to all, not least as a revealing accompaniment to the more sanitised version of events given in the group's own "autobiography", The Beatles Anthology. --Steve Price [via]

Seewald übernimmt die Rolle des kritisch nachfragenden, oft skeptischen Zeitgenossen. Ratzinger weicht keiner Schwierigkeit aus, ja oft vertieft er zunächst das von Seewald aufgeworfene Problem. In nie ermüdender Geduld und erstaunlicher Antwortfähigkeit, mit beeindruckender synthetischer Kraft zieht er die Grundlinien des Glaubens aus, um alle diese Linien wieder in seiner Mitte zusammenzuführen. Ratzingers zu Recht viel gerühmte Einführung in das Christentum (1968) hat so in ihrem Anliegen in der Gestalt des Gesprächs eine großartige neue Form gefunden, die inhaltlich denn auch durch ihr Gespür für die aktuellen Herausforderungen in Kultur und Gesellschaft besticht.
Nur wenig ist kritisch anzumerken: Allein aus der intellektuellen Biografie Ratzingers ist sein unnötiges, allenthalben spürbares und nur leise eingeschränktes Ressentiment gegen die historisch-kritische Methode in der Bibelwissenschaft zu erklären. Peinlich (und vermutlich vom Verlag zu verantworten) ist indes der Text des Rückumschlags, der Ratzinger als "einen der größten christlichen Gelehrten seit Thomas von Aquin" apostrophiert. Die vollendete Maßstabslosigkeit dieser Aussage zeigt aber nur einmal mehr die Notwendigkeit des Anliegens dieses großen und wichtigen Buches: die Einführung in die Mitte des christlichen Glaubens. --Martin Brüske [via]

Dans Une saison de machettes, Jean Hatzfeld a retrouvé une douzaine de ces assassins hutus, agriculteurs pour la plupart, en attente dun jugement ou déjà jugés dans la même commune de Nyamata, et leur donne la parole. Adabert, Alphonse, Ignace, Elie, Léopord, Jean-Baptiste, Pancrase, Pro, et les autres, racontent en toute bonne foi, "avec une énorme franchise, souvent même avec candeur", observe lauteur, cette année 1994 où tout a basculé après lassassinat du président rwandais. "On sassemblait sur le terrain de foot en bande de connaissance, et on allait en chasse par affinité", "On pensait quon pouvait désormais se débrouiller sans Dieu", expliquent-ils. Et de raconter comment eux, Hutus, sarmant de machettes, en se mettant à piller, à violer, à tuer aussi systématiquement que férocement, ont pris leur revanche sur lethnie des Tutsis qui avaient tenu les clefs du pouvoir pendant une longue période.
Dans cette grande enquête sous forme de récit, Hatzfeld analyse le processus du génocide. Ou comment de simples agriculteurs, placés dans une situation exceptionnelle et encadrés par les autorités locales, en sont venus à massacrer leurs voisins, sans état dâme, par conformisme, mais avec le souci de bien faire le "travail", jusquau bout. "Tuer était moins échinant que cultiver", dit lun. "Je tuais sans conséquences, je madaptais sans problème", se souvient un autre. À la fin du récit, les douze hommes acceptent de poser pour une photo, comme une bande de copains. Nulle trace de repentir dans leur discours, ni de mauvaise conscience.
