John Naughton, to judge by this learned but lightly written history of modern communications technology, is deeply interested in just about everything. It mystifies the Irish-born Cambridge University scholar that so few people share his fascination with the Internet--and, he grumps, "the higher you go up the social and political hierarchy the worse it gets."
A Brief History of the Future, whose title is just right, is Naughton's attempt to educate the uninitiated in how the Internet came to be. Although its development occurred in starts and stops over a half-century, the Internet came into its own only in the 1990s, with the arrival of the World Wide Web and widely available software to negotiate it. Each of those innovations, though, drew on work that sometimes extends deep into the past, and Naughton does a good job of tracing technical lineages. Though studded with geekspeak, his narrative doesn't presuppose much background knowledge on his readers' part, unlike Stephen Segaller's worthy Nerds 2.0.1., which covers some of the same ground. Naughton's cast of characters includes such scientific and administrative luminaries as Norbert Wiener, Vannevar Bush, Paul Baran, Bill Gates, Linus Torvalds, and Tim Berners-Lee (but, sad to say, not Al Gore), each of whom made contributions large and small to what Naughton insists is a technological revolution with endless possibilities for the common good.
Well-written and richly detailed, Naughton's book is a fine introduction to the Net, and to the countless, largely unsung innovators who made it possible. --Gregory McNamee [via]

If you believe its dust-jacket, A Perfect Mess: The Hidden Benefits of Disorder not only defends cluttered desks and bursting closets, but proves that on balance, tidiness is less beneficial to overall achievement than chronic disorganization. That sounds counter-intuitive, but authors Eric Abrahamson and David H. Freedman strive hard to make the case.
"A Perfect Mess overturns the accepted wisdom that tight schedules, organization, neatness, and consistency are the keys to success," they intone. "Drawing on examples from business, parenting, cooking, the war on terrorism, retail, and even the meteoric career of Arnold Schwarzenegger, [the authors] demonstrate that moderately messy systems use resources more efficiently, yield better solutions, and are harder to break than neat ones."
The presence of the words "cooking," "war on terrorism" and "Arnold Schwarzenegger" in the same sentence sends up a red flag about the veracity of the authors' theory. Indeed, when you step back and analyze it, what Abrahamson and Freedman are really rallying against is rigidity, not actual mess. The pair admits as much about two-thirds into the book. "Mess is about flexibility, variation, inconsistency, and the unexpected. If there were a single right way to do it, it wouldn't be messy."
Many of the supporting examples of messes-gone-right are decidedly clever, even persuasive. There's the fellow who discovered penicillin growing in a dish on his filthy desk, the Tourette's sufferer who parlayed his tics and outbursts into success on the stock exchange floor, the expatriate Egyptian restaurateur who reached culinary nirvana with a bunch of mismatched plates. And, of course, there is the Austrian bodybuilder who conquered California, marrying a Kennedy along the way.
Despite the frequent holes in its logic, A Perfect Mess is a brisk and highly engaging read. Abrahamson and Freedman--a Columbia Business School professor and a journalist/author, respectively--know a fun fact when they see one and their tone is never preachy. But anyone thinking the book will act as an airtight argument against doing the dishes or aggregating AWOL socks is poised for disappointed. Better to break your chores down into smaller, more manageable tasks, tackle them with gusto, then settle in for an evening of reading. --Kim Hughes [via]

How many times has your PC crashed today? While Gordon Moore's now famous law projecting the doubling of computer power every 18 months has more than borne itself out, it's too bad that a similar trajectory projecting the reliability and usefulness of all that power didn't come to pass, as well. Advances in information technology are most often measured in the cool numbers of megahertz, throughput, and bandwidth--but, for many us, the experience of these advances may be better measured in hours of frustration.
The gap between the hype of the Information Age and its reality is often wide and deep, and it's into this gap that John Seely Brown and Paul Duguid plunge. Not that these guys are Luddites--far from it. Brown, the chief scientist at Xerox and the director of its Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), and Duguid, a historian and social theorist who also works with PARC, measure how information technology interacts and meshes with the social fabric. They write, "Technology design often takes aim at the surface of life. There it undoubtedly scores lots of worthwhile hits. But such successes can make designers blind to the difficulty of more serious challenges--primarily the resourcefulness that helps embed certain ways of doing things deep in our lives."
The authors cast their gaze on the many trends and ideas proffered by infoenthusiasts over the years, such as software agents, "still a long way from the predicted insertion into the woof and warp of ordinary life"; the electronic cottage that Alvin Toffler wrote about 20 years ago and has yet to be fully realized; and the rise of knowledge management and the challenges it faces trying to manage how people actually work and learn in the workplace. Is this book sociology, anthropology, or taxonomy? Sorting Things Out, by communications theorists Geoffrey C. Bowker and Susan Leigh Star, covers a lot of conceptual ground in its effort to sort out exactly how and why we classify and categorize the things and concepts we encounter day to day. But the analysis doesn't stop there; the authors go on to explore what happens to our thinking as a result of our classifications. With great insight and precise academic language, they pick apart our information systems and language structures that lie deeper than the everyday categories we use. The authors focus first on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), a widely used scheme used by health professionals worldwide, but also look at other health information systems, racial classifications used by South Africa during apartheid, and more.
Though it comes off as a bit too academic at times (by the end of the 20th century, most writers should be able to get the spelling of McDonald's restaurant right), the book has a clever charm that thoughtful readers will surely appreciate. A sly sense of humor sneaks into the writing, giving rise to the chapter title "The Kindness of Strangers," for example. After arguing that categorization is both strongly influenced by and a powerful reinforcer of ideology, it follows that revolutions (political or scientific) must change the way things are sorted in order to throw over the old system. Who knew that such simple, basic elements of thought could have such far-reaching consequences? Whether you ultimately place it with social science, linguistics, or (as the authors fear) fantasy, make sure you put Sorting Things Out in your reading pile. --Rob Lightner [via]

The first, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, which focuses on charts and graphs that display numerical information, virtually defined the field. Like its predecessors, Visual Explanations is both intellectually stimulating and beautiful to behold. Tufte, a self-publisher, takes extraordinary pains with design and production. The book ranges through a variety of topics, including the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger (which could have been prevented, Tufte argues, by better information display on the part of the rocket's engineers), magic tricks, a cholera epidemic in 19th-century London, and the principle of using "the smallest effective difference" to display distinctions in data. Throughout, Tufte presents ideas with crystalline clarity and illustrates them in exquisitely rendered samples. [via]
