Though tightwad seems like a derogatory term, author Amy Dacyczyn wants to assure you that it's okay to be a penny-pincher. This self-styled "Frugal Zealot" wrote and published The Tightwad Gazette for over six years to spread the frugal gospel. Each issue contained tips from her personal experience and from her many readers. The wealth of information contained in all these issues has been compiled into one volume for the first time. You'll find literally thousands of ideas for saving money, from the simple or practical to the difficult or bizarre. On the simple, practical side, Dacyczyn advises would-be tightwads to keep track of price trends at several stores in a "price book" and to buy in bulk when prices are low. Other, stranger offerings include tips for turning margarine-tub lids into playing-card holders, old credit cards into guitar picks, and six-pack rings into a hammock or volleyball net. More helpful are inexpensive recipes for making homemade versions of pricey, well-known products and ingenious ways to fix broken or damaged items. The book's disorganization encourages browsing, but the detailed index will point you to the exact page for specific items. Dacyczyn's occasional "thriftier than thou" tone is balanced by the friendly support for frugality that infuses every page. She even reminds her readers that it's okay to "sweat the small stuff"--because this small stuff is the essence of frugality. --C.B. Delaney [via]

Virtually everyone enjoys a crisply ironed dress shirt, clean sheets on a well-made bed, and a savory home-cooked meal. Yet housekeeping today stands as a somewhat neglected, if not maligned, job. But as author Cheryl Mendelson points out in Home Comforts, keeping house well can be a rewarding position--it allows you to provide for the physical and emotional comfort of loved ones. It's also not an easy job--there's much to be learned about properly managing a home, and Mendelson has set out to provide a guide to doing just that.
Mendelson, a homemaker, lawyer, and mother, learned about housekeeping from an early age from her grandmothers, one Appalachian, the other Italian. The two grandmothers taught her that although different ways of keeping house can be appropriate, there are generally smarter, faster, and more creative ways of housekeeping that make it less of a chore and more of an art. In a practical, authoritative tone, Mendelson discusses the ins and outs of homemaking, such as washing dishes, recommended cleaning methods for various surfaces, housekeeping for those with pets or allergies, and emergency preparedness and safety procedures.
Mendelson's well-researched book includes meticulous sections on food (for example, which foods belong in the fridge versus the pantry, food storage times, picking the freshest fruits and vegetables, and keeping your kitchen and food sanitary) as well as laundry (caring for various fabrics, how to read--and read between the lines of--clothing care labels, and removing stains). Mendelson covers a lot of ground, and as she herself points out, readers shouldn't feel required to do everything mentioned in the book--simply pick the activities that seem appropriate for your particular home. This is a comprehensive reference book that should serve homemakers well and induce a greater appreciation for the effort and specialized knowledge that go into keeping house. --Kris Law [via]

Eating. Sleeping. Bathing. Chores. These are the things we do every day, yet few of us stop to consider how we perform the routines that occupy 95 percent of our lives: in chaos or serenity, with irritation or with joy.
Here, in one elegant, copious and forever rereadable book, Alexandra Stoddard shows how to live a more beautiful, more ordered life, every single day. Drawing on the wisdom of Emerson, Samuel Johnson, Rilke and many others and warmed by Alexandra Stoddard's personal anecdotes, this book deals with life both philosophically and practically -- from discovering the sources of your well-being to buying the right stationery or sheets; from using solitude to replenish your spirit to using fabrics, ribbon, paper and your own five senses to transform your daily life.
Living a Beautiful Life demonstrates how to use the ordinary in extraordinary ways, suggesting hundreds of techniques for turning dull, irritating routines into life-enhancing rituals; hundreds of simple ways to transform your days -- or your bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and desk -- into delights of beauty and efficiency. There's a marvelous trick for locating the perfect psychological spot for your bed, a quick way to use "remembrance of things past" to choose color schemes that suit you, suggestions for how to turn a fifteen-minute lunch break into a restorative experience. And throughout, Alexandra Stoddard shows how taking care of "the little things" can ultimately add up to a change in the big things.
Most of all, Living a Beautiful Life reveals how a beautiful life can be achieved; how daily motions become truly satisfying patterns of pleasure; and how these patterns of pleasure can add up to a life lived deeply and well, transforming even the most cluttered and hectic existence. [via]

Most homeschooling families would agree that scheduling is essential to fit school, work, chores and family time into the day, but many have not found a system that works for them. Steve and Teri Maxwell have faced the same challenges over the years. They've been homeschooling their eight children for fourteen years and had to find ways to make it work. Managers of Their Homes incorporates solutions that worked for them and for other families as well. The book goes into greater depth than most planning books, and includes sections on scheduling children's days, school, chores, kitchen work, priorities, and school year vs summer. Since we do not live in the ideal world, sections on interruptions, challenges, and babies are also included. How-to's include putting a schedule together and implementing the schedule. The real question is, "Does it work?" Twenty-four families (many of them large families) tested the book before it was published to see if it helped them. Their comments include "I had read almost every organizational book there was, and I still couldn't get to where I wanted to be until I applied this method!", and "My schedule has given me back my sanity!! I can't believe the way my life has changed since implementing a schedule." Their encouraging comments are sprinkled throughout the book. 40 pages of sample schedules from these families are included in the appendix. In the back of the book is a "Scheduling Kit" to aid you in getting your own schedule up and running. There are still just 24 hours in a day, but this book can help you get the most out of them. Excerpted from a review by Ginny Silva in Christian Parenting Today: "This book offers much-needed encouragement to families who are tired of hearing society's endless whine about the impossibility of mothers staying home to raise their own children. The fact is, it can be done, and it is being done, with ingenuity and good cheer. The book is short on sermonizing,it assumes a readership that is already convinced that staying home is best, but doesn't quite know how to make it work. Her Eleven Miserly Guidelines are completely practical, and at the top of the list is the most important: "Don't confuse frugality with depriving yourself." [via]

This complete revamping of what is perhaps the champion of do-it-yourself guides, surveying almost everything under your roof and some of what lies beyond, has managed to retain all of its classic virtues without adding unnecessary pages. Rewritten, redesigned and newly illustrated, the upgraded edition also includes more color, improving the legibility of its explanatory drawings. New materials, techniques and tools are examined and explained with Reader's Digest 's customary clarity and thoroughness. This profusely color-illustrated volume is an excellent update to the popular Reader's Digest Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual (Reader's Digest Assn., dist. by Random, 1973). The book's intended audience is the occasional do-it-yourselfer with basic to intermediate skills. The coverage is comprehensive, though not overly detailed. Each chapter profiles a particular component of "doing it yourself," and discusses emergency repairs, various tools, fasteners, and building materials before moving into procedures on "how to use." User safety and environmental protection are stressed throughout. The format of the book lends itself to exploration. This update is recommended for public and academic libraries owning the original and desiring a worthy successor, or for those with interest in the area. [via]

Stand back, Heloise, here comes the Queen of Clean. Armed with both common sense and ingenuity, Linda Cobb made a name for herself on Morning, Arizona. For those of you who don't happen to live in Arizona, she has written this helpful little book. Talking Dirty with the Queen of Clean tackles just about any household stain, stink, or accident you can think of.
"There are five cleaning products you should never be without," says the Queen, "and most of them are things you already have in your home." What are they? White vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, club soda, and Spot Shot Instant Carpet Stain Remover (her favorite brand). With these simple items, you can clean and deodorize nearly every room in your home, thereby saving money on expensive store-bought cleaners and reducing the amounts of chemicals in your home. Did you burn a casserole? Fill the dish with hot water, one tablespoon of baking soda, and soak. Try cleaning brass and copper with half a lemon sprinkled with salt. It should shine right up (and smell good, too).
The chapters are short and sweet, and besides the usual home/pet/kid/upholstery cleaning techniques, the Queen also tackles patio furniture, the grill, electronic equipment, plants, and smoke and water damage. Did you know you can distract grasshoppers by planting basil around your flowerbeds? They'll eat that and leave your flowers alone. Here's our favorite tip: when painting or washing walls, wrap washcloths or old rags around your wrists and secure them with rubber bands. When you lift your arms, the paint or water drips will be absorbed instead of running all the way down your arms. Keep this book handy. --Dana Van Nest [via]
