Acclaimed military strategist and author Ralph Peters assembles 18 essays, some written before and others after the September 11 attacks, which show his writing at its best. Always one step ahead of other military strategists, Peters evaluates the status quo of world affairs and brings his years of experience as an Army-insider to bear on the state of terrorism in the world today, and his vision for how the United States should be fighting the war against terrorists and terrorism. Peters proposes an unorthodox view of intelligence analysis, attacks the lie that the American people will not accept casualties, and, in a tour de force, reveals the human side of Clausewitz. Drawing on the experiences of an unusual military career and travel to more than fifty countries, Peters portrays a world undergoing the most dramatic changes in history. Beyond Terror takes us far beyond the intellectual prison of traditional wisdom to offer the most original thinking available on the strategic challenges confronting the United States in the 21st century. More than 2.8 million people currently call Brooklyn home, and over the past few decades, the boom of art galleries, stores, and nightlife in this proud borough of New York has drawn visitors from near and far. Yet the fascinating mix of people, places, and institutions that define Brooklyn today existed long before the current cultural renaissance.
In this profusely illustrated book, writers Grace Glueck and Paul Gardner provide a historic tour of the borough, from the Brooklyn Bridge and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge to Prospect Park and Coney Island. The reader is also introduced to the dynamic people of Brooklyn, from Hasidic Williamsburg to the African American community in Bedford-Stuyvesant, and some of its most celebrated natives, including Woody Allen, Spike Lee, Barbra Streisand, Mae West, and Truman Capote. Salvador Dalí (1904-1988) was one of the most popular and most visible artists of the last century, known for his provocative works and his larger-than-life personality. He created an astoundingly diverse body of work, including paintings, drawings, prints, book illustration, films, and stage sets. Whatever the medium, his works were filled with dreamlike, fetishistic images rendered in a precise, hyperrealist style. In this fascinating account, art historian Jean-Louis Gaillemin focuses on the intimate details of Dalí's life, especially his intense relationship with his longtime partner Gala, and how his psychological views and state of mind influenced his work. › Find signed collectible books: 'Don Troiani's Civil War'
Although he has been painting the War Between the States since 1980, Don Troiani's Civil War is the first book to collect this historical artist's work in one volume. Troiani is at his best in the battle paintings--his attention to detail and insistence on historical accuracy help him capture the valor and confusion of combat--but the book includes more bucolic depictions of camp life, as well. Brian Pohanka's accompanying text illuminates the stories behind the paintings. For example, he describes a famous episode from Second Manassas where Confederate soldiers ran out of bullets during a Union assault; the beleaguered Rebels resorted to throwing rocks at the Union lines. Troiani captures this desperate action magnificently. Because the narrative focuses on these small stories, it sometimes misses the big picture; so while the text and paintings are presented in chronological order from 1861 to 1865, it makes for only a so-so recounting of the war overall. But this is not a book you read so much as experience. --Thomas Prowell [via]

Cocteau's novel Les Enfants Terribles, which was first published in 1929, holds an undisputed place among the classics of modern fiction.
Written in a French style that long defied successful translationCocteau was always a poet no matter what we was writingthe book came into its own for English-language readers in 1955 when this translation was completed by Rosamund Lehmann. It is a masterpiece of the art of translation of which the Times Literary Supplement said: "It has the rare merit of reading as though it were an English original." Lehrmann was able to capture the essence of Cocteau's strange, necromantic imagination and to bring fully to life in English his story of a brother and sister, orphaned in adolescence, who build themselves a private world out of one shared room and their own unbridled fantasies. What started in games and laughter because for Paul and Elisabeth a drug too magical to resist. The crime which finally destroys them has the inevitability of Greek tragedy. In a comic masterpiece following the misadventures of a simple but hugely ambitious waiter in pre-World War II Prague, who rises to wealth only to lose everything with the onset of Communism, Bohumil Hrabal takes us on a tremendously funny and satirical trip through 20th-century Czechoslovakia.
First published in 1971 in a typewritten edition, then finally printed in book form in 1989, I Served the King of England is "an extraordinary and subtly tragicomic novel" (The New York Times), telling the tale of Ditie, a hugely ambitious but simple waiter in a deluxe Prague hotel in the years before World War II. Ditie is called upon to serve not the King of England, but Haile Selassie. It is one of the great moments in his life. Eventually, he falls in love with a Nazi woman athlete as the Germans are invading Czechoslovakia. After the war, through the sale of valuable stamps confiscated from the Jews, he reaches the heights of his ambition, building a hotel. He becomes a millionaire, but with the institution of communism, he loses everything and is sent to inspect mountain roads. Living in dreary circumstances, Ditie comes to terms with the inevitability of his death, and with his place in history. [via]More editions of I Served the King of England:

By the summer of 1864, Abraham Lincoln had good reason to fear that he might not be re-elected. The continuing toll of three years of indecisive war had seriously weakened the resolve of the Northern people to continue the fight. Lincoln's Democratic Party opponent, General George B. McClellan, was formidable; he enjoyed tremendous popularity and commanded the votes of all those opposed to the war. With a McClellan victory, the war might end, the Confederate States of America might win independence, and slavery might be perpetuated indefinitely. This text, nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, marks a milestone in Civil War and Lincoln history. It investigates deeply the events of 1864 that eventually produced Lincoln's re-election and, with it, the emancipation of the slaves. [via]

In our own time the "wilderness" has emerged as a source of spiritual renewal, both as idea and in actual practice. But Hsieh Ling-yün (385-433 C. E.) was there before us.
During the last decade of his life, living as a recluse high in the mountains of southeast China, he initiated a tradition of "rivers-and-mountains" (shan-shui) poetry that stretches across the millennia in China, a tradition that represents the earliest and most extensive literary engagement with "the wild" in human history. These poems were hugely popular in Hsieh's own time and established him as one of the most innovative and influential poets in the history of Chinese poetry as well as a founder of Ch'an (Zen) Buddhism. Once again David Hinton, a recipient of fellowships from The National Endowment for the Arts and The National Endowment for the Humanities and the winner of a Harold Morton Landon Translation Award from The Academy of American Poets, has produced a fluid and supple translation that does full justice to the rivers-and-mountains of Hsieh Ling-yün's inspiration. Winner of the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature. Jean-Paul Sartre, philosopher, critic, novelist and dramatist, hold a position of singular eminence in the world of French letters. Among readers and critics familiar with the whole of Sartre's work, it is generally recognized that his earliest novel, Le Nausée (first published in 1938), is his finest and most significant. It is unquestionably a key novel of the Twentieth Century and a landmark in Existentialist fiction.
Nausea is the story of Antoine Roquentin, a French writer who is horrified at his own existence. In impressionistic, diary form he ruthlessly catalogues his every feeling and sensation about the world and people around him. His thoughts culminate in a pervasive, overpowering feeling of nausea which "spread at the bottom of the viscous puddle, at the bottom of our timethe time of purple suspenders and broken chair seats; it is made of wide, soft instants, spreading at the edge, like an oil stain." Roquentin's efforts to come to terms with his life, his philosophical and psychological struggles, give Sartre the opportunity to dramatize trhe tents of his Existentialist creed.
he introduction for this edition of Nausea by Hayden Carruth gives background on Sartre's life and major works, a summary of the principal themes of Existentialist philosophy, and a critical analysis of the novel itself. [via]

In this much-anticipated follow-up to his acclaimed Omaha Beach, historian Joseph Balkoski chronicles the amphibious landings and airborne operations at Utah Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Part of the story is already familiar: Among the paratroopers who landed with the 101st Airborne was the company Stephen Ambrose followed in Band of Brothers. Using firsthand after-action reports and unit journals, Balkoski creates a compelling narrative of the fighting at Utah Beach on D-Day, while meticulously constructed maps pinpoint key geographical features and show unit locations as the action unfolds.
Added to the invasion plan largely at the insistence of British General Bernard Montgomery, the attack at Utah Beach aimed to secure the Cotentin Peninsula and ultimately seize the port of Cherbourg. Although the assault on Utah Beach became one of the most successful American military operations of World War II, it was fraught with risk from the beginning: Not only was Utah the most isolated of the five D-Day beaches, but the airborne operation was of unprecedented size and scope. Despite the perils, American troops cascaded into that corner of Normandy from the sea and the sky, gaining a military triumph that contributed decisively to Allied success on D-Day. This book is both an engaging narrative and a tribute to the men who stormed the beaches and dropped from the sky. [via]

This witch's brew of a book is back in all its tantalizing glory to enchant a new generation of readers. Best-selling author Erica Jong here turns her attention to the fantastical and factual world of witchcraft. In beguiling poetry and prose, she looks at the figure of the witch both as historical reality and as archetype - as evil crone and full-breasted seductress, as a lingering vestige of a primeval religion and a projection of fear of the unknown. Joseph A. Smith's powerful, haunting illustrations enliven each page, as Jong investigates the witch as a survivor of the age of sorcery, as a scapegoat for male-dominated church-state politics, as a remarkable natural healer, and as a hexer without peer. Real recipes for love potions and flying lotions, along with formulas for spells and incantations, make this book a rich journey of mystery and delight. Available in paperback for the first time, Witches has been a favorite since it was published more than 20 years ago - a testament to the enduring fascination with the myths and truths about these intriguing figures.
