In the 1890s Blacks were tortured in German concentration camps in Southwest Africa (now called Namibia) when Adolph Hitler was only a child. Colonial German doctors conducted unspeakable medical experiments on these emaciated helpless Africans decades before such atrocities were ever visited upon the Jews.
Thousands of Africans were massacred. Regrettably, historians neglected to properly register the slaughterthat is, to lift it from the footnote in history that it had been relegated tountil now.
In an attempt to give the incidents their rightful recognition in the historical context of the Holocaust, Dr. Firpo W. Carr has authored a new book entitled, Germanys Black Holocaust: 18901945. In it, he reveals the startling hidden history of Black victims of the Holocaust. The mayhem and carnage date back to the turn of the 20th century, many years before there were ever any other unfortunate victimsJew or Gentileof the Holocaust.
Carr conducted three incredibly revealing interviews with: (1) a Black female Holocaust victim; (2) the Black commanding officer who liberated 8,000 Black men from a concentration camp; and (3) an African American medic from the all-Black medical unit that was responsible for retrieving thousands of dead bodies from Dachau. (White medical units were spared the gruesome task.)
"Kay," the Black female Holocaust survivor, laments: "You cannot possibly comprehend the anger I have in me because of being experimented on in Dachau, and being called nigger girl and blacky while growing up."
Testimonials from the Black commanding officer and African American medic are memorialized, for the first time ever, in Carrs book. The research is based on voluminous documentation, and more.
If you are like most people, you simply have never heard the unbelievable story of Black victims of the Holocaust. You are invited to read about the human spirit's triump over events that occurred during this horrible piece of hidden history. [via]

No book in modern times has matched the uproar sparked by Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses, which earned its author a death sentence. Furor aside, it is a marvelously erudite study of good and evil, a feast of language served up by a writer at the height of his powers, and a rollicking comic fable. The book begins with two Indians, Gibreel Farishta ("for fifteen years the biggest star in the history of the Indian movies") and Saladin Chamcha, a Bombay expatriate returning from his first visit to his homeland in 15 years, plummeting from the sky after the explosion of their jetliner, and proceeds through a series of metamorphoses, dreams and revelations. Rushdie's powers of invention are astonishing in this Whitbread Prize winner. [via]

Her first book since Memnoch the Devil, Anne Rice takes us now into the world of Isaiah and Jeremiah, and the destruction of Solomon's temple, to tell the story of Azriel, Servant of the Bones. He is ghost, genji, demon, angel--pure spirit made visible. He pours his heart out to us as he journeys from an ancient Babylon of royal plottings and religious upheavals to the Europe of the Black Death and to the modern world. There he finds himself, amidst the towers of Manhattan, in confrontation with his own human origins and the dark forces that have sought to condemn him to a life of evil and destruction. [via]

"I don't know how long before i shall have to go into the field of battle. For my part i don't care. I don't feel afraid to go. I don't believe there are any Rebel's bullet made for me yet."--Pvt. Lyons Wakeman.
Similar sentiments were expressed by tens of thousands of Civil War soldiers in their diaries and in their letters to loved ones at home. What transforms the letters of Pvt. Lyons Wakeman from merely interesting reading into a unique and fascinating addition to Civil War literature is who wrote them--for Private Wakeman was not what "he" seemed to be. The five-foot tall soldier's true identity was that of a simple young farm girl from central New York state named Sarah Rosetta Wakeman. Her letters, the only such correspondence known to exist, provide a rare glimpse of what life was like for a woman fighting as a common soldier in the Civil War under the guise of a man.
Written shortly after she left home to pursue her fortune in 1862, Rosetta's letters over the next two years tell of army life in the defences of Washington, D.C. and on the march and in battle during the 1864 Louisiana Red River Campaign. She wrote frequently to her family in Afton, NY, and her letters contain feelings and observations like those expressed by the majority of her fellow soldiers. We read of her determination to perform honorably the duty required of a soldier, the trials of hard marching and combat, her pride in being able to "drill just as well as any man" in her regiment, and her eventual fatalistic attitude toward military service, and her frequent expressions of faith in God and the afterlife. Although Rosetta did not survive the war, her letters remain as an singular record of female military life in the ranks, a phenomenon largely ignored by historians and researchers.
Private Wakeman was not alone in embarking on her strange adventure. Hundreds of women, from both the North and South, disguised themselves as men and enlisted in the armies of our nation's bloodiest war. The experiences of these women during the Civil War are just beginning to be recognized as elemental to understanding the life of this country during those turbulent times. Little is known about these women precisely because they enlisted and served in constant secrecy, fearful of revealing their true identities. This unique collection of letters offers a firsthand look at the personality and character of a woman who defied convention to take a man's place in the Union army. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'Understanding War: History & Theory of Combat'
This book, by the author of "Encyclopedia of Military History", propounds a general theory of military combat, one which is designed to be valid across history and potent in its implications for strategies and tactics in military policy. The book combines quantified analysis with detail drawn from actual military history. One of the major conclusions of the book is that most military planners and commanders need to draw upon historical experience in constructing a science of military combat, a science which is more essential than ever in an era of high military technology. The book also gives an account of why so many - mainly American - military ventures have frequently failed; but more important, it points the way toward successfully learning from historical experience. The Living Memorial is a curriculum developed by the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland. When we refer to the Holocaust, we traditionally refer to the six million souls who perished. But there is another dimension that must be considered-the destruction of Jewish life and culture of pre-war Europe. It is only after extensive research into "what was" that we can more fully grasp the magnitude of the Holocaust, how deeply we suffered then and the loss we still feel today. Our mission is to create an increased awareness of the past and to stimulate a renewed effort in kindling the spark of Torah study. We dedicate these efforts in memory of the one and a half million Jewish children whose spiritual potential was tragically obliterated. Our charge is to prepare curricula, projects, and programs so that today's school children will continue the legacy of Torah studies. This will be "The Living Memorial" to the martyred children of the Holocaust. Hebrew Academy of Cleveland Founded in 1943 by the Telshe Roshei Yeshiva who had escaped the Holocaust, the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland is a nationally acclaimed day school offering nearly 800 students an intensive Judaic and secular education from pre-school through high school. This multi-faceted Torah institution is staffed by some of the nation's finest educators, committed to inspiring young Jewish minds to the legacy of Torah. Many of its 5,000 alumni have assumed leadership roles in communities around the globe. The Hebrew Academy of Cleveland has truly left its imprint on the broad spectrum of Jewish life during the past half century. A new chapter in the annals of Torah Chinuch has been written with this curriculum. [via]
