The 1904 Olympics, the man who created tennis's Davis Cup, a record-smashing seventy home runs in one season, a man named Stan, the first forward pass in football, and the richest collection of soccer talent in North America: Hall of Fame journalist Bob Broeg recounts these tales and others in The One Hundred Greatest Moments in St. Louis Sports.
Originally scripted for KFNS radio as part of a series read by Bob Costas, Broeg's vignettes cover the people and events of fourteen different St. Louis sports. With his behind-the-scenes perspective, the author highlights legendary feats and the untold stories that surrounded them. Discover how the St. Louis Stars' "Cool Papa" Bell, the renowned speedster of the Negro Leagues, once scored from first base on a bunt; and how trainers stimulated Thomas J. Hicks, the winner of the marathon at the 1904 Olympics, with doses of strychnine, brandy, and egg whites during the race. Broeg's descriptive storytelling and anecdotal style are accompanied by lavish illustrations.
In a 1993 article in U.S. News and World Report, Harrison Rainie wrote, "If there is a common language in socially atomized, economically stressful, morally wandering America, it revolves around sports." Athletics is a defining factor for a region's identity, and for St. Louis, it has always played a significant role in the city's economic and social life. Broeg describes not only the lure and legacy of these sports moments, but also how they contribute to a shared identity for the city.

Just what the sports world needs, another baseball encyclopedia, right? Don't scoff. If you're a true fan, there is never enough information, never enough stats, never enough raw data. So what sets this 2,696-page, eye-scrunching, numbers-crunching rookie apart from its more established veterans, the venerable Baseball Encyclopedia and its modern cousin Total Baseball? For starters, it has the name-recognition cachet of Bill James.
James pretty much revolutionized baseball statistics in the '70s and '80s; finding deeper meanings in the numbers, he extrapolated new statistical categories that gave the numbers deeper meaning, like runs created for hitters and the amalgamation he called a pitcher's component ERA. And when it comes to numbers, the Handbook packs a powerful lineup. Which is both its strength and weakness. James, to his credit, understood that going in. The Handbook, he admits, is not for everyone.
On the plus side, the entry for Steve Carlton, as James points out in his introduction to establish comparisons, has 625 statistics to describe his stellar 24-year career in Baseball Encyclopedia, and a slightly different set of 625 numbers in Total Baseball. The Handbook almost triples that to 1,795. Does everyone need all that? Of course not. Does anyone? "Only," suggests James, "if you're a baseball fan"--more accurately, an amazingly dedicated one--because if you are, "you want the sharpest and clearest picture of a player's skills that you can get."
The Handbook provides that picture through its myriad numbers for every player to ever make it to the Bigs. What it won't give you are those important, comparative lists of all-time and seasonal leaders, or the provocative essays that beg for debate. However, James steps onto that field in his follow-up at-bat, the Handbook's equally titanic companion volume, All-Time Major League Sourcebook, which includes seasonal summaries and box scores of every postseason game every played. Together, they aspire to be the statistical equivalent of Murderers' Row. --Jeff Silverman [via]

A beautifully written book and a stunning achievement. Thanks to Nathaniel Tripp's extraordinary depiction of war in Vietnam, based on his own experiences, I finally understand what it was like to fight there. Here is the savagery, the terrible anxiety, the sheer unreality of the conflict, and above all the appalling innocence and unpreparedness of the young Americans who were sent into that incomprehensible war.
Skillfully interwoven with the war story is how the author comes to terms with his own terror, with his failed father and their failed relationship, and how he makes up for the lost love of a parent by becoming something like a father to the men in his platoon. I can't recommend Father, Soldier, Son highly enough. [via]

A never-before published tale by the author of the best-selling Hittite Warrior, carries the reader back to Ancient Egypt and biblical Jerusalem. It is 701 B.C-rule of the Kushite dynasty in ancient Egypt. Young Prince Taharka, a very minor royal son, succeeds unexpectedly to the throne of Kush and Egypt-a divine rulership.
It's not long, however, before a treacherous plot pushes him into sudden exile and into the hands of Amos, an emissary of King Hezekiah seeking help against the Assyrians. Posing as a medical assistant, Taharka journeys with Amos to Judea where he encounters two kings in conflict. His true identity suddenly uncovered, he must choose with whom he will fight-the mighty Assyrian, Sennacherib, promising alliance or Hezekiah, the Jew who trusts in Yahweh.
A novel inspired by research on the historical King Taharka and his period. [via]

It was a time of turbulence; the outbreak of the Civil War. He was a twelve-year-old boot-black from New York City. Caught up in the fervor of the moment and longing for soldierly adventure, young Gustav Schurmann enlists as a musician with the 40th New York, Company I. Little does he know of the excitement, danger, and hardship that await him. During the four years of his military career, this drummer would quickly rise in the ranks and be promoted to division bugler. He would be appointed orderly to Major-Generals Philip Kearny, David Birney, George Stoneman, and Daniel Sickles. He would become fast friends with Tad Lincoln, the President's youngest son. And, he would learn first hand of the tragedies and devastation of war. Through it all, small but tough as he was, Gus would emerge as his own hero, proving his bravery and strength of character in ten battles, from Bull Run to Gettysburg. This is his story: an unforgettable tale of duty and loyalty to family, friends, and cause in a war that would forever change his life, and our nation.
The Little Bugler: the True Story of a Twelve-Year-Old Boy in the Civil War relates more than the engaging saga of Gustav Schurmann, as it also explains Civil War and other military terminology in an easy-to-read manner. Additionally, a glossary is included for quick reference. Dozens of photos, images, and illustrations serve to further enhance the reader's appreciation of the characters in this story and the period in which they lived. [via]

Once again, the irrepressible Bill James has gone deep into the numbers and come up with a volume that will strain your bank book, inflame your hernia--and, if you really love baseball--offer countless hours of delight and debate. The enormous companion to STATS All-Time Major League Handbook, the Sourcebook slides into corners that the 2,500-plus-page Handbook somehow overlooked.
There are complete rosters and player stats for every major-league team since 1876, year-by-year league and team-leader boards in hitting and pitching, and career- and team-leader hitting and pitching stats. Though James and company manage to push the statistical limits, the real fun of the Sourcebook begins on page 1,524, with complete box scores for every postseason game ever played. Want more? All-Star game boxes begin on page 2,326; year-by-year Hall of Fame balloting on page 2,374 (down to journeymen who managed only to eke out a single vote); complete Most Valuable Player, rookie of the year, and Cy Young Award voting on page 2,411; a set of STATS-imposed retroactive annual all-star teams (page 2,450) culminating in an all-time all-star team that should flare a few tempers; and, most fun of all, box scores for more than 150 great games, with the authors' explanations of why each is notable, on page 2,470. These, of course, cry out for debate--if not all-out thermonuclear war--as well.
If your pulse isn't jangling yet, the Sourcebook may be an extravagance that will only bow your bookshelves and break your back. But if your heart is racing, you're probably halfway out the door already, off to the bank in search of a small loan. --Jeff Silverman [via]
