Charles Rennie Mackintosh's finest work dates from about a dozen intensely creative years around 1900. His buildings in Glasgow, and especially his craggy masterpiece the Glasgow School of Art, are more complex and playful than any other work in Britain at that time. His interiors, many of them designed in collaboration with his wife, Margaret Macdonald, are both spare and sensuous; a world of heightened aesthetic sensibility inside the Willow Tea Rooms or The Hill House. And his inventive imagination, which played constantly with the shape of curves and squares, produced designs for furniture which transformed ordinary chairs into pieces of abstract sculpture. Finally, in the 1920s he painted a series of watercolours which are as original as anything he had done before. Since his death, Mackintosh has been both lauded as a pioneer of the Modern Movement and as a master of Art Nouveau. [via]

This prize book on the subject of domestic decoration . . . enchantingly informs us about the evolution of taste and comfort. Art & Auction
The appeal of this extraordinary book lies in its rapt obsession with the details of the domestic interior, borne out in a wonderfully rich collection of pictures. These charming paintings and watercolors, mostly dating from 1770 to 1860 and coming from all over Europe, Russia, and America, record with faithful accuracy the shape of a room, the pattern of a carpet, the furniture, pictures, fabrics, and wall coverings, the hang of the curtains and the fall of the light they admit.More editions of An Illustrated History of Interior Decoration from Pompeii to Art Nouveau:

Outsider Art is work produced outside the mainstream of modern art by self-taught, untrained visionaries, spiritualists, eccentric recluses, folk artists, psychiatric patients, criminals, and others beyond the imposed margins of society and the art market. Coined by Roger Cardinal in 1972, the term in English derived from Jean Dubuffet's "art brut" -- literally "raw art", "uncooked" by culture, unaffected by fashion, unmoved by artistic standards.
In this indispensable book Colin Rhodes surveys the history and reception of Outsider Art -- first championed by Dubuffet and the Surrealists, now appreciated by a wide public -- while providing insight into the achievements of both major figures and newly discovered artists. From spirit-guided Madge Gill to schizophrenic Adolf Wolfii, these individuals passionately and obsessively pursue the pictorial expression of their vision. [via]

This comprehensive survey the history of realist painting and argues that realism has had a continuous yet restlessly changing place in American and European painting throughout the 20th century. Artists discussed include Eakins, Bellows and Homer, Vuillard, Bonnard, Schiele, Morandi, Hopper and Giacometti, through to Balthus, Lucian Freud, and David Hockney. The author provides the historical, artistic and critical contexts in which painting has taken a realist turn, from the Ashcan School to Soviet Social realism, from painting of the Existentialist era to the time of Photorealism, to recent developments. He argues that the western tradition of pictorial realism has in fact been renewed and modified through the diverse influences of modernism, political conflict and new visual technologies. [via]

Throughout the centuries, a young man courting a young woman, a monarch celebrating his or her dynastic marriage, a longwedded woman wishing to affirm her abiding love for her husband, people both famous and unknown, have chosen jewels of all sorts to mark the sentiment and occasion. This is a tradition which continues to be practised today. Geoffrey Munn is widely recognized as a leading expert on the history of these adornments, all of them expressing the strong emotions of the donor. Here are splendid rings, brooches and necklaces, exquisitely worked by master craftsmen with hearts and arrows, intertwined initials, vines, flowers and other symbolic motifs, all showing the special language known to lovers. Most of these radiant jewels also hide a fascinating story, and the author tells all that is known about their origins: the giver and the receiver, the designer, and the meaning of each piece. Geoffrey C. Munn is the author of numerous books and articles on jewellery and has organized several exhibitions on specific jewellers. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. [via]
