When the first American Marines marched into Vietnam in March 1965, historical consensus holds, they were there because there was no alternative. President Johnson's hand had been forced by the right-wing hawks and the Communists. The general public wholeheartedly supported defending South Vietnam, as did our allies in Europe.
That's not really the case, argues Fredrik Logevall, in Choosing War: The Lost Chance for Peace and the Escalation of War in Vietnam. His provocative thesis--that Kennedy, Johnson, Rusk, McNamara, and Bundy chose to escalate American involvement when the war could have been avoided--is well supported by careful archival research and newly declassified documents. Logevall focuses on what he calls "The Long 1964"--18 critical months between August 1963 and February 1965, at the end of which President Johnson made the decision to "Americanize" the war. Despite many opportunities to negotiate a settlement, the Kennedy and the Johnson administrations were opposed to early negotiation--in part because they were worried about being seen as "soft on Communism" before the 1964 presidential election. Where this book is most interesting--and, in the long run, most valuable--is in Logevall's careful study of the conflict and American policymaking in international context. Looking at how the war played in London, Paris, Ottawa, Tokyo, Moscow, and Beijing--not just in Hanoi and Washington--reveals that even our allies had grave doubts about the probable outcome of a war. Both our allies and our enemies understood that "the Vietnam conflict's importance derived in large measure from its potential to threaten their own political standing--and their party's standing--at home." Compelling and controversial, Logevall's book is an excellent addition to the literature on the Vietnam War. --Sunny Delaney [via]

In City of Stone: The Hidden History of Jerusalem, Meron Benvenisti assumes and achieves a seemingly impossible task--telling the political, architectural, social, cultural, and religious history of the holy city of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Benvenisti, a former deputy mayor of Jerusalem, seems to know every rock, every person, and every conflict that has any significant place in the city's history. He describes them all with the objectivity of a scholar and the passion of a lover, qualities that make City of Stone equally useful for armchair historians and curious travelers. For example, Benvenisti's vivid and circumspect histories of the Temple Mount (where the Jews' first temple stood and where Mohammed began his famous Night Journey) and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (built on the purported site of Jesus' crucifixion) expertly convey not only the complicated political and religious battles for national and clerical control of these sites, but also give a solid of sense of what it's actually like to be there. Benvenisti's powers of analysis and observation are best synthesized in his final chapter, which explores, among other topics, the abiding desire of Christians, Jews, and Muslims to be buried in Jerusalem and therefore to become more holy by resting in its holy soil. "They all sought a safe haven, a new land, a new life--they all strove to build the celestial Zion," he writes. "Perhaps this accumulation of hopes and desires buried in the graveyards of Jerusalem may nuture faith that peace and reconciliation can prevail, even in this world." --Michael Joseph Gross [via]

In 1988, French novelist Patrick Modiano happened upon a notice in a 1941 Paris newspaper placed by the parents of a 15-year-old Jewish girl, Dora Bruder, who had disappeared from the Catholic boarding school where she was being hidden. The notice stuck in Modiano's memory, and it launched him on a quest for information about the girl's life that resulted in Dora Bruder. Modiano's lengthy investigation turned up only tiny scraps of information about Dora--but every scrap made the mystery of her disappearance more haunting. Most strikingly, Modiano found her name on a list of Jews deported from Paris to Auschwitz in 1942. "It takes time for what has been erased to resurface," Modiano explains. "It took me four years to discover her exact date of birth: 25 February 1926. And a further two years to find out her place of birth: Paris, 12th arondissement. But I am a patient man. I can wait for hours in the rain." Eventually Modiano's search forces him to come to terms with his own difficult adolescence. Yet this book defies categorization in both history and memoir. It is something more complex, and harder--a poetic acknowledgment and a philosophical refutation of common and terrifying human fates: being isolated, forgotten, and lost. --Michael Joseph Gross [via]

It's refreshing to get such a passionate and contrarian account of Jane Austen's life, though the book's emphasis on thwarted emotions and family misdeeds will undoubtedly displease the more traditional-minded of her admirers. David Nokes, a prominent scholar of 18th-century English literature, views Austen as "a wild beast" (her phrase) transformed by well-meaning relatives into a demure spinster through wholesale bowdlerizing of her letters and personal papers. Nokes's narrative doesn't tell us anything new, but by stressing Austen's ambition and acerbity, he offers a welcome alternative perspective. [via]

Addressing a gathering of black DJs in Atlanta in 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said: "In a real sense you have paved the way for social and political change by creating a powerful, cultural bridge between black and white.... You introduced youth to that music and created a language of soul and promoted the dances which now sweep across race, class and nation." "That music" was rhythm and blues, and Brian Ward uses King's quote to further the premise of his fascinating book, Just My Soul Responding: Rhythm and Blues, Black Consciousness, and Race Relations: that the music moved not only the feet of listeners, but their hearts and minds as well.
But as with nearly anything associated with race relations in the U.S., there is a flip side to this record, and Ward offers ample evidence that suggests R&B also served to reinforce white stereotypes of blacks and promoted continued segregation. As he points out, many of the same white fans who packed venues to see Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, and Aretha Franklin never supported the notion of equal rights or integration. In other words, entertainment was fine as long as it didn't challenge the status quo. It is precisely this lack of acceptance--combined with the snail's pace of civil rights legislation--that led to the emergence of the Black Power movement and the concurrent rise of funk and soul, the self-consciously inclusive offspring of R&B originally geared specifically for black audiences. Of course, the fact that James Brown's "Say it Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud" or Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" carried undeniably political messages for blacks didn't mean the average white music fan couldn't "get up, get into it and get involved." Ward's insistence on this point clearly suggests, despite his attempt at objectivity, that he believes the music made a difference.
Ward's coverage of R&B stretches from the release of the Chords' single "Sh-Boom" in 1954 through the mid-1970s, so it is far from a complete history of the genre, but his work is to be applauded for both its ambition and enthusiasm. Though his theorizing may wear thin at times, Just My Soul Responding is exhaustively researched (the notes and sources stretch nearly 100 pages) and packed with the kind of anecdotes that music lovers will savor. Particularly adept coverage of Chuck Berry, James Brown, Parliament-Funkadelic, Motown founder Berry Gordy, and the roles of many other prominent artists who either supported and avoided the civil rights cause stand out as some of the book's highlights. In all, a rousing hybrid of history, social commentary, and the literate liner notes of an ardent fan. --Shawn Carkonen [via]

Noted Israeli author Yaron Ezrahi has created a hybrid of memoir, history, and social commentary in Rubber Bullets: Power and Conscience in Modern Israel. He examines the complex and halting shift from a collectivist Zionist mindset to a contemporary individualism and delivers a critical and passionate account of the Jewish state. Here the rubber bullets Israeli soldiers cruelly and ineffectually fired at rock-throwing Palestinians serve as a metaphor for Israel's conflicted sense of self. Ezrahi analyzes the effects of mandatory military service, the threat of terrorism, and the absence of personal choice on Israeli youth. In a nation where solidarity is viewed as strength, even a necessity, he sees the dangers of sharp generational differences regarding the role of the individual and the original aims of Zionism. He writes of watching footage of violent clashes during the apex of the Intifada: "The pictures on the screen . . . suddenly settled . . . on a single Israeli soldier . . . pointing his gun at a group of shouting, stone-throwing Palestinian youth . . . and I was seized by an impulse to cover my father's eyes with my right hand while keeping my son's wide open with my left."
