There's no shortage of biographies available on Alexander the Great, but Peter Green's Alexander of Macedon is one of the finest. The prose is crisp and clear, and within a few pages readers become absorbed in the world that made Alexander, and then the story of how Alexander remade it. Green writes, "Alexander's true genius was as a field-commander: perhaps, taken all in all, the most incomparable general the world has ever seen. His gift for speed, improvisation, variety of strategy; his cool-headedness in a crisis; his ability to extract himself from the most impossible situations; his mastery of terrain; his psychological ability to penetrate the enemy's intentions--all these qualities place him at the very head of the Great Captains of history." "Will undoubtedly become a standard work of reference."Journal of Hellenic Studies
Athenian black figure vases bear the work of consummate artists like Exekias, who depicted on them scenes of myth and everyday life that deepen our knowledge and understanding of Greek antiquity. John Boardman enables the reader to study the many aspects of the vases, and to grasp the essential style of a painter or group of painters, without having to consult a number of expensive, and not always easily accessible, publications. A final section is devoted to the mythological scenes and other decorative features of the vases. 385 black-and-white illustrations [via]More editions of Athenian Black Figure Vases: A Handbook:

Tomas Bulfinch's wonderful and accessible retelling of the myths of classical antiquity and the fables of the age of chivalry has been renowned for almost 150 years as a rich panorama of gods, goddesses, and heroes, of crusading knights in the Holy Land and outlaw archers in Sherwood Forest.
With an introduction by the eminent historian Michael Grant, the selections resented here offer lively versions of the legends of the Trojan War and the epic homeward voyage of Ulysses, the story of King Richard the LionHearted, and the tales of Robin Hood.
During his distinguished career, Michael Grant has been a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge; professor of humanities at Edinburgh University; vice- chancellor of the University of Khartoum; and president and vice-chancellor of the Queen's University, Belfast. Among his many books are Myths of the Greeks and Romans, Founders of the Western World: A History of Greece and Rome, and Greeks and Romans: A Social History. Bulfinch's Mythology is also available from Random House as an unabridged Modern Library book. [via]

Collected here are all 11 of his surviving plays-newly translated by the distinguished poet and translator Paul Roche.

No education is complete without a large slice of Greek mythology. And there's no better way of meeting that literary quota than with the D'Aulaires' book. All the great gods and goddesses of ancient Greece are depicted in this big, beautiful classic, lovingly illustrated and skillfully told. Young readers will be dazzled by mighty Zeus, lord of the universe; stirred by elegant Athena, goddess of wisdom; intimidated by powerful Hera, queen of Olympus; and chilled by moody Poseidon, ruler of the sea. These often impetuous immortals flounce and frolic, get indiscreet, and get even. From petty squabbles to heroic deeds, their actions cover the range of godly--and mortal--personalities.
The D'Aulaires' illustrations have a memorable quality: once pored over, they will never leave the minds of the viewer. Decades later, the name Gaea will still evoke the soft green picture of lovely Mother Earth, her body hills and valleys and her eyes blue lakes reflecting the stars of her husband, Uranus the sky. No child is too young to appreciate the myths that have built the foundation for much of the world's art and literature over the centuries. This introduction to mythology is a treasure. Herbert Mason's best-selling Gilgamesh is the most widely read and enduring interpretation of this ancient Babylonian epic. One of the oldest and most universal stories known in literature, the epic of Gilgamesh presents the grand, timeless themes of love and death, loss and reparations within the stirring tale of a hero-king and his doomed friend. A finalist for the National Book Award, Mason's retelling is at once a triumph of scholarship, a masterpiece of style, and a labor of love that grew out of the poet's long affinity with the original. Entertaining and thoughtful, this book graphically portrays an area of Greek and Roman life that was an embarrassment to the eighteenth- and nineteenth century scholars discovering these objects in their classical collections. At a time of sexual prudery such material was viewed as unsuitable for serious study and removed from public display.
With 125 black and white and 38 color illustrations, "Sex or Symbol?" shows that while overt sexual representations were common in painting, sculpture, pottery, jewelry and other minor arts, not all the objects that shocked the Victorians had an erotic purpose. Catherine Johns demonstrates that many had a religious and apotropaic function as well as reflecting the classical delight in erotic art for its own sake. They also shed light on the social mores of the time, in particular the wide range of sexual behavior acceptable in classical antiquity. [via]

Was there such a person as Homer? Who were the key figures in the first democracy of the Western World? Who is the father of tragedy? Who is the father of history?
Of all the world's ancient civilisations, it is perhaps the Ancient Greece that has the strongest hold over the modern imagination. The history, philosophy and literature continue to intrigue and enthral. Now John Hazel has compiled the definitive biographical guide to the Greek and Hellenistic world from 750 BC to the end of the Roman Empire.
The lives of Alexander the Great, Socrates and Plato are opened up, but so too are those of lesser-known figures: Bacchylides the lyric poet; Chares the general; and the traitor Ephialtes, giving a thorough and fascinating overview of life in Ancient Greece. [via]
