When the first Blondie daily strip appeared on September 8, 1930, little did creator Chic Young think for a fleeting moment that, 51 years later his son Dean and Rick Marschall would be publishing a book summing up its phenomenal success to that point (and would STILL be going strong some 31 years after that). Here I'll relate the text on the outside back cover of this 8 1/2 x 11 144-page history of the strips first half-century: "Blondie is the most popular comic strip in the world! Blondie appears in more major newspapers than any other comic strip character in history, and for more than fifty years has made us all laugh. In celebration, here is a glorious tribute to Blondie and Dagwood Bumstead, America's f avorite family. Here's the behind-the scenes story of the strip, and a colorful selection of the best of Blondie - all packed with fun, hilarity, sentiment and love. Did you know that Dagwood Bumstead began life as a millionaire's son? That Blondie was a gold-digging flapper? It's all here - their stormy and world famous courtship, the fateful wedding that almost wasn't, the foundation of the funny family that everyone has come to know like next-door neighbors. Visit with Mr. Dithers, the Woodleys, Mr. Beasley the postman, Daisy and the pups, and a cast of thousands of salesmen. Relive their lives and re-laugh your laughs ... and rediscover the humor and Warmth of Blondie's America." With a two page introduction by Bob Hope, written in May 1981, followed by a great full-page sketch of Chic with Dagwood and Blondie, you get 21 full pages outlining the life of Mr. Young and his family, details of his first characters Jane (The Affairs Of), Beautiful Bab and Dumb Dora, sprinkled with vintage photos, sample strips for the three aforementioned characters (in both color and black and white - something repeated throughout the book) [via]

After 15 years of designing more than 1,500 book jackets at Knopf for such authors as Anne Rice and Michael Chrichton, Kidd has crafted an affecting an entertaining novel set at a state university in the late 1950s that is both slap-happily funny and heartbreakingly sad. The Cheese Monkeys is a college novel that takes place over a tightly written two semesters. The book is set in the late 1950s at State U, where the young narrator, has decided to major in art, much to his parents dismay. It is an autobiographical, coming-of-age novel which tells universally appealing stories of maturity, finding a calling in life, and being inspired by a loving, demanding, and highly eccentric teacher.

Scott McCloud's Reinventing Comics, the sequel to his groundbreaking work Understanding Comics, is a study of two revolutions: a failed one and a potential one. His 1993 book was not only a chronicle of the potential breakthrough of comics (which he redefined as "sequential art") into a legitimate art form but a sterling example itself of the medium's astonishing untapped potential. Now, seven years later, he chronicles the failure of the comic book industry to fulfill that promise, but also explores how the movement can be restarted, particularly by utilizing the resources of another spectacularly successful revolution, the Internet. In the first half of Reinventing Comics, an elegantly clean example of comic art in McCloud's trademark bold black-and-white style, the author outlines how hype, speculation, and artistic burnout led to the genre's decline. He then lays out 12 paths toward a new revolution of comics, including creators' rights, industry innovation, public perception, gender balance, and diversity of genre, which are then explored with such innovative intelligence that, as with his earlier work, the conclusions he comes to are fascinating for both artists and nonartists alike.
Three of his paths, however, are of particular interest to anyone who wants to know how the Internet will affect both our lives and the livelihoods of future artists. Understanding Comics, with its brilliant how-to guide on marrying image and language, has become an indispensable reference for many Web designers. Now McCloud returns the favor by focusing on how the digital revolution will influence production, delivery, and the art form of comics itself. Informative without being pedantic, controversial without being argumentative, and always entertaining, this is both a worthy sequel to the author's brilliant original and a work that opens up the potential for an entirely different direction for sequential art in the realm of cyberspace. --John Longenbaugh [via]

Where the Wild Things Are is one of those truly rare books that can be enjoyed equally by a child and a grown-up. If you disagree, then it's been too long since you've attended a wild rumpus. Max dons his wolf suit in pursuit of some mischief and gets sent to bed without supper. Fortuitously, a forest grows in his room, allowing his wild rampage to continue unimpaired. Sendak's color illustrations (perhaps his finest) are beautiful, and each turn of the page brings the discovery of a new wonder.
The wild things--with their mismatched parts and giant eyes--manage somehow to be scary-looking without ever really being scary; at times they're downright hilarious. Sendak's defiantly run-on sentences--one of his trademarks--lend the perfect touch of stream of consciousness to the tale, which floats between the land of dreams and a child's imagination.
This Sendak classic is more fun than you've ever had in a wolf suit, and it manages to reaffirm the notion that there's no place like home. [via]
