"The men as they rode turned black in the sun from the blood on their clothes and their faces and then paled slowly in the rising dust until they assumed once more the color of the land through which they passed." If what we call "horror" can be seen as including any literature that has dark, horrific subject matter, then Blood Meridian is, in this reviewer's estimation, the best horror novel ever written. It's a perverse, picaresque Western about bounty hunters for Indian scalps near the Texas-Mexico border in the 1850s--a ragged caravan of indiscriminate killers led by an unforgettable human monster called "The Judge." Imagine the imagery of Sam Peckinpah and Heironymus Bosch as written by William Faulkner, and you'll have just an inkling of this novel's power. From the opening scenes about a 14-year-old Tennessee boy who joins the band of hunters to the extraordinary, mythic ending, this is an American classic about extreme violence. [via]

This lovely, well-written book is concerned foremost with creating beautiful typography and is essential for professionals who regularly work with typographic designs. Author Robert Bringhurst writes about designing with the correct typeface; striving for rhythm, proportion, and harmony; choosing and combining type; designing pages; using section heads, subheads, footnotes, and tables; applying kerning and other type adjustments to improve legibility; and adding special characters, including punctuation and diacritical marks. The Elements of Typographic Style teaches the history of and the artistic and practical perspectives on a variety of type families that are available in Europe and America today.
The last section of the book classifies and displays many type families, offers a glossary of typography terms, and lists type designers and type foundries. The book briefly mentions digital typography, but otherwise ignores it, focusing instead on general typography and page- and type-design issues. Its examples include text in a variety of languages--including English, Russian, German, and Greek--which is particularly helpful if your work has a multinational focus. [via]

Frankenstein, loved by many decades of readers and praised by such eminent literary critics as Harold Bloom, seems hardly to need a recommendation. If you haven't read it recently, though, you may not remember the sweeping force of the prose, the grotesque, surreal imagery, and the multilayered doppelgänger themes of Mary Shelley's masterpiece. As fantasy writer Jane Yolen writes of this (the reviewer's favorite) edition, "The strong black and whites of the main text [illustrations] are dark and brooding, with unremitting shadows and stark contrasts. But the central conversation with the monster--who owes nothing to the overused movie image & but is rather the novel's charnel-house composite--is where [Barry] Moser's illustrations show their greatest power ... The viewer can all but smell the powerful stench of the monster's breath as its words spill out across the page. Strong book-making for one of the world's strongest and most remarkable books." Includes an illuminating afterword by Joyce Carol Oates. [via]

Hundreds of bold-color illustrations keep pace with Shakespeare's dialogue in The Illustrated Macbeth, an unexpurgated but easy-to-understand, panel-by-panel look at the classic tragedy of ambition and death. Like the Elizabethan groundlings who stood just inches from the stage at the old globe theatre, readers observe characters and scenes close at hand, immediately making vital, visual connections between actors and actions.
For this new popular format, no one word of text has been edited from the Folio Edition. The European artist Von has worked almost two years painting figures of heroic stance to depict the bloodchilling encounters and haunting soliloquies: Macbeth's prophetic meeting with the Three Sisters, the dark night of Duncan's murder, Lady Macbeth's guilty madness, the moments before the fatal duel with Macduff. Caesar has plans to build a luxury holiday complex, the Mansion of the Gods, for Roman holidaymakers, just next to the Gaulish village. However, through the cunning plans of Asterix, things do not turn out quite as the Romans had hoped.
The Adventures of Asterix (French: Asterix or Asterix le Gaulois) is a series of French comic books written by Rene Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo (Uderzo also took over the job of writing the series after the death of Goscinny in 1977). The series first appeared in French in the magazine Pilote on 29 October 1959. As of 2008, 33 comic books in the series have been released.
The series follows the exploits of a village of ancient Gauls as they resist Roman occupation. They do so by means of a magic potion, brewed by their druid, which gives the recipient superhuman strength. The protagonist, the titular character, Asterix, along with his friend Obelix have various adventures. In many cases, this leads them to travel to various countries around the world, though other books are set in and around their village. For much of the history of the series (Volumes 4 through 29), settings in Gaul and abroad alternated, with even-numbered volumes set abroad and odd-numbered volumes set in Gaul, mostly in the village.
The Asterix series is one of the most popular Franco-Belgian comics in the world, with the series being translated into over 100 languages, and it is popular in most European countries.
The success of the series has led to the adaptation of several books into 11 films; eight animated, and three with live actors. There have also been a number of games based on the characters, and a theme park near Paris, Parc Asterix, is themed around the series. To date, 325 million copies of 33 Asterix books have been sold around the world making co-creators Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo France's bestselling authors abroad. [via]

In paperback, the book that touched off the treasure hunt of the century-with a full explanation of the Masquerade Riddle.
For three years, treasure-seekers from both sides of the Atlantic sought a fabulous golden hare buried by artist Kit Williams. Williams had devised an unusual guide to the hare's whereabouts: a multilayered riddle that he told in a fairy tale of his own imagining, and presented in dazzling, cryptic, paintings.
When the hare was finally unearthed by a British engineer, many were left wanting to know exactly how the clues worked out. In this paperback reprint of Masquerade, the author supplies an illustrated preface that pulls the strings, finds the goal, and points to what's important: the village chemist's daughter, the atomic weight of the elements, the shadows of the equinox, Henry VIII's first wife. Williams explains how numbers and colors correspond to the intricate ballet, and how the eyes really do see the answer. And of course, here are the magical pages that tell the tale of Jack the hare, and his journey to the sun. They are still there to discover, ponder, rediscover. And understand at last.
Suitable for ages 7 and up. 73,000 copies in print. [via]

The ninth volume of the Cerebus the Aardvark series, Reads, is the penultimate chapter of the larger Mothers and Daughters story. This is one of the most powerful editions in the series and one of the most ambitious narratives that Dave Sim has ever attempted.
In addition, Reads is the most controversial volume of the Cerebus series to date because of a parallel narrative involving two characters--Viktor Reid and Viktor Davis--who are both alter egos for Dave Sim. This controversy is a shame because the offensive section in Reads--which explores the relationship between men and women--represents only one possible view of this subject. When read as part of the whole series, the passages that may have seemed shocking to some, appear (like all points of this narrative) to question and provoke rather than offend. Viktor Davis is far from a reliable narrator, an idea that is reinforced by the final paragraphs of his narrative and demonstrated by the scariest of all Cerebus practical jokes. Are Viktor Davis or Viktor Reid representative of Dave Sim or simply aspects of his persona? The ending suggests the answer.
Meanwhile, Cerebus, Po, Cirin, and Astoria debate the important stuff, including our aardvark friend's genitalia, the history of Illusionism, the nature of power, and the fate of Astoria's child. Despite the bad rap, Reads is Cerebus at its finest. Like the best of art, Reads has the power to shock, surprise, amuse, and offend--and it even has a whiz-bang fight scene. The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck confirmed Don Rosa's status as the heir apparent to the great Carl Barks as Disney's premiere comic storyteller. For this massive 12-part epic, originally printed in Uncle Scrooge 285-296 (April 1994 through February 1996), Rosa combed through Barks' stories for the many clues about what transformed Scrooge McDuck from a Scottish boy to the richest duck alive. Thus, Scrooge's comment that he fought in the "cattle wars of the old frontier" was turned into a story about the young Scrooge's cattle job in Montana. Rosa incorporates actual historical facts with known elements of the Scrooge mythology to spin an incredibly rich chronicle, full of tall tales, crazy gags, and high adventure. The 1995 Eisner winner for Best Serialized Story is even better in trade paperback format, in which Rosa offers his own memories of writing the story, "insane details to look for," and rare art. Want more of Rosa's Scrooge? The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion collects other stories about the life of Scrooge that weren't in the original series. --David Horiuchi [via]
