Two years after the multiple-award winning Blab #8 comes editor Monte Beauchamp's next installment of America's premiere comics anthology. The front and back covers are by Gary Baseman, and you'll find new comics stories by Richard Sala, Doug Allen, Spain, Terry Laban, Peter Kuper, Chris Ware, and others. Plus there are essays on America's first serial killer, Howard Unruh (by Jeffrey Steele), and the cover art of Dell mystery paperbacks (by Beauchamp). The cornerstone of this issue is an amazing 13-page retrospective of the art of Boris Artsybasheff, an expatriate Russian designer/illustrator who created more than 200 covers for Time. His images of war and industry influenced a generation of artists. [via]

The popular Mexican cartoonist makes his American debut.
Best-selling Mexican cartoonist Jis (Jose Ignacio Solorzano) makes his American debut in Cats Don't Exist. With a childlike mastery of the obvious, an inspired sense of mischief, and hilarious insight into the human divine, Jis' comics at once recall the sensibilities of both Jules Feiffer and Terence McKenna. They are penetrating and baffling, honing in on the utter astonishment one must feel at having been born human, offering simple, earthy insights in a cosmically foreign landscapeor vice versa.
Deceptively minimalistic, Cats Don't Exist collects a handful of comic stories and individual drawings that will nudge the lucky reader gently into a dissonant universe. Included in this collection are the title story, "Cats Don't Exist," which introduces us to a world where cats replace aliens as the boogeyman of the human psyche; "To Our Dear Enemies," a thank you note to the censors for infusing boring old sex with intrigue; and "Guilt as an Aphrodisiac," wherein the author discusses his lust for rat witches and expresses his desire to snore shamelessly. Jis' work is an evolution in psychedelia, with a visionary sense of absurdity and humanity that will render you incapable of wiping that silly smirk off your face. [via]

It is impossible not to love the hysterical monster mystery Harum Scarum. The plot is well thought out, and the characters--a police detective dog, a wise-cracking reporter cat, and an innocent-bystander bunny--are utterly enjoyable. The bunny's school pal asks him to stop by the pal's father's place and to bring along a journalist. Imagine the surprise of the bunny and the journalist when they find a monster in the apartment! From there they get wrapped up in police cover-ups, communist terrorists, and a mad scientist's plan to cleanse the world. Lewis Trondheim's gift of comics storytelling really shows through when you read a scene in which one of the characters explains a trick or a trap, and you can go back a few panels and see the whole thing perfectly set up, wondering all the while how you could have missed it. And Trondheim's ability to have his character's dialogue devolve into petty discourses about trivial matters such as the "niceties of tipping and the exact location of the jugular vein" is a true joy. Jesus is back in this collection of groundbreaking collection from Harvey Pekar's Our Cancer Year collaborator.
Underground comics were known for their satirical assaults on beliefs held dear by middle America. None was more witty or biting than the very first underground comic ever publishedFrank Stack's The Adventures of Jesus. Stack's controversial strip first saw print in the Texas counterculture publications, The Charlatan and The Austin Iconoclastic, and the University of Texas humor magazine, The Texas Ranger. In 1964, Texas Ranger editor Gilbert Shelton (who would later go on to create the little known Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers) made 50 photocopies of about a dozen strips, stapled and collated the pages, designed a cover and distributed it to friends around campus.More editions of New Adventures of Jesus: The Second Coming:

Despite the popularity of the term "graphic novel" in reference to novel-length stories done in comics, comic books are not novels. Which is not to say that comics cannot have the sophistication and depth of a novel, but the best comics have qualities that separate them from straight prose. Mark Kalesniko's Why Did Pete Duel Kill Himself? illustrates this difference. Much more like a tone poem than a novel, this book gracefully explores a delicate issue: a young, misunderstood boy trying to comprehend why a famous actor would kill himself. Whereas a novel might be overly expository, Pete Duel contains page after page of silent scenes of the boy, Alex Kalienka (drawn as an anthropomorphic dog in a world of humans), being humbled, humiliated, and beat up. The chapters are brutally true-to-life, Alex Kalienka is completely engaging, and the resolution--not so much uncertain as it is unspoken--is haunting. Read it and then read it again. You won't find out why Pete Duel killed himself, but you may discover something much more touching. [via]

Degrading daliances in dungeons. " A lavishly illustrated European import that goes behind the scenes of a nineteenth century London feminist witches' coven." -Face London, in the last third of the 19th century. After bringing death to her mother in childbirth, and shame and suicide to her father due to her illegitimacy, young Lilian Cunnington is shipped off ther her aunts near Conventry. As it turns out, Lilian's aunts are the leaders of a coven of witches, whose twisted rituals frequently involve their nubile charges in grotesque exhibitions. Soon, Lilian, tapping into both her unsuspectedly powerful psychic abilities and her omnisexual potential, begins to uncover the darker secrets of the coven, and the resultant battle of wills ends in a climactic conflagration. Illustrated by the interationally renowned South American cartoonist F. SOLANO LOPEZ (creator of such acclaimed graphic novels as Deep City and Ana), Young Witches is a tale of magic and power, of sex and sadism, of witches and mutants - a supernatural thriller that will scare you and arouse you at the same time. As a special bonus, this expanded version of Young Witches includes extra pages of sizzling, explicit sex action created especially for this edition! [via]
