You'd be forgiven for being skeptical about the subject matter of Clyde Fans. After all, the first 78 pages feature an old man, Abraham, waking up, eating breakfast, and puttering around his electric-fan shop, all the while delivering a monologue on salesmanship and his family history. Hardly the material of a good comic, you may think, but you'd be wrong. The first book in a multipart series, Clyde Fans is a compelling psychological portrait of men caught in a time not of their making or, more appropriately, of their choosing. Like Seth's earlier masterpiece, It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken, Clyde Fans is a study of our age's outcasts, those who can't--or won't--adjust to modern life.
Abraham quietly waits out the last days of his life by contemplating his past and his relationship with his brother, Simon. At first his reminiscences seem little more than an old man's nostalgia, but it soon becomes clear he's searching for signs he has left some mark in the world. Abraham's sense of time passing him by is heightened by Seth's depiction of his world as rooted firmly in the past: even though the year is 1997, the buildings are all old, the calendars are stuck on 1978, and there's not a computer in sight anywhere. The panels themselves are invested with emotion, coloured in subdued shades of blue and grey and largely absent of other people. The second half of the book follows Simon on his similarly troubled quest to become a salesman. Even though this storyline is set in 1957, Simon's despair of fitting into a world driven by the ruthless logic of the marketplace applies equally to our own lives. Seth has acknowledged autobiographical parallels with Clyde Fans, calling it a "kind of Death of a Cartoonist." This comic is more an homage to a lost time than a tragic elegy, though, and unlike Abraham, Seth doesn't need to worry about leaving his mark in the world. --Peter Darbyshire [via]

In 1987 Joe Matt began work on the autobiographical comic series Peepshow (later instalments of which are collected in The Poor Bastard). Peepshow quickly became an underground hit for its painfully honest accounts of Matt's dysfunctional relationships and his obsession with pornography, but Matt challenged his audience by turning to his childhood years in the 1995-1997 "Fair Weather" storyline. Fair Weather takes place over a weekend in young Matt's life, but this return to the past is anything but nostalgic. He spends most of the weekend alienating friends and family and attempting to avoid being beaten up by an former pal. Matt is on the verge of adolescence in the comic, and his awkward--and sometimes cruel--encounters with girls foreshadow the problems in his adult relationships. The foundation of Matt's life as a comic artist is also laid here, as he spends the weekend trying to find a copy of Action Comics No. 1 and track down his comics collection, which his mother has hidden.
Despite some fans' complaints about Fair Weather lacking Peepshow's usual focus on sexual obsessions and the failures of love, it is in many ways Matt's most challenging work. It's a searingly honest self-portrait of the artist as a truly horrible youth: self-centered, greedy, uncaring, unsure of himself, and simultaneously contemptuous and fearful of the world. As in the case of other Peepshow comics, readers may find Matt repugnant and unlikable, but at the same time they can't help but identify with him just a little. While Fair Weather reads well enough as a stand-alone account of childhood, its real strength lies in the way that it fleshes out the rest of Matt's life. If Peepshow is Joe Matt's autobiography, Fair Weather is his secret diary. --Peter Darbyshire [via]

One of Shakespeare's greatest, but also bloodiest tragedies, was written around 1605/06. Many have seen the story of Macbeth's murder and usurpation of the legitimate Scottish King Duncan as having obvious connection to contemporary issues regarding King James I (James VI of Scotland), and the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. King James was particularly fascinated with witchcraft, so the appearance of the witches chanting "Fair is foul, and foul is fair" at the opening of the play seemed particularly topical, as was Macbeth's betrayal of Banquo, from whom James claimed direct descent.
However, the play is clearly far more than a piece of royal entertainment. It is also a fast-moving and dramatically satisfying piece of theatre. Macbeth's existential struggle between loyalty to his King and his "Vaulting ambition" is fascinating to watch, as his is struggle with Lady Macbeth, and her own terrifying refusal of her maternal role. The play shows an intensification of Shakespeare's interest in mothers and their effect upon ruling masculinity, and also contains some of the most memorable speeches in the entire canon, including Macbeth's reflections that ultimately life "is a tale / Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, / Signifying nothing". --Jerry Brotton [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'
Traditionally seen as one of Shakespeare's more romantic and enchanting plays, A Midsummer Night's Dream has more recently been seen as a darker and more sinister play than generations of schoolchildren have ever imagined. The play has usually been seen as a comical tale and confused identities and the fickleness of youthful love, as the young lovers, Lysander, Hermia, Demetrius and Helena escape parental control and the "sharp Athenian law" of their elders by eloping into the forest outside the city. Unfortunately they stumble into civil war in fairyland, where King Oberon and Queen Titania fight over possession of a beautiful young Indian "changeling" boy. The appearance of the "rude mechanicals", a group of Athenian workers, including the weaver Nick Bottom, compounds the confusion. Chaos, confusion and "shaping fantasies" reign before the final settlement of the play, but underneath all the hilarity many critics have discerned more ambivalent attitudes towards coercive parental control, bestial sexuality and the destructive power of desire. These approaches in no way detract from the exquisite lyricism of many sections of the play, but make it a more complex and effective comedy than has often been appreciated. --Jerry Brotton [via]
