"Penguin Decades" bring you the novels that helped shape modern Britain. When they were published, some were bestsellers, some were considered scandalous, and others were simply misunderstood. All represent their time and helped define their generation, while today each is considered a landmark work of storytelling. Anthony Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange" was published in 1962 and has been controversial ever since. There are scores of computer dictionaries and glossaries out there, and you'll probably want to own more than one. But Andy Ihnatko's Cyberspeak makes a fine little addition to your collection. The word list is not exhaustive, but it's up-to-date, online-heavy, and strikes a nice balance between hip and geek. Many entries are unapologetically opinionated, but the author delivers what most other glossaries lack: a huge dose of cybercultural context. If you don't know that UNIX is "the third most popular religion ... the fifth most popular basis upon which to start a fistfight" you'll soon be up to speed. It isn't all ranting, though. In the new edition of this work many of the 2000 terms it defines have completely revised entries, and there are several hundred new entries. The coverage of the dictionary has been expanded to cover literary theory and the critical developments that have grown up since the first edition of the book was published in 1976. Now, in addition to its informative entries on the language of literature and literary criticism, from Bascarole and courtesy books to sprung rhythm and Vorticism, the dictionary contains entries on theorietical topics from aporia to Yale School. Gray's Anatomy is an English-language human anatomy textbook originally written by Henry Gray. Why subscribe to the Scrabble dictionary's changeable lexicon? Well, it ends the argument of whose dictionary to use, but the main reason is that it's the winner's dictionary, and why play Scrabble if not to win?
