His biography, written by his wife, former comedian and practising psychotherapist Pamela Stephenson, is pretty much the same. Over the years Connolly has grown from Glasgow shipyard welder to folk-singing beardy hard man (yes there is such a thing) to darling of the good and great (or at least famous) around the world. That he is so many things to so many people while in no way compromising his core self can only be good. It would be no mean feat for Stephenson, then, to pen a history to that would satisfy Connolly audiences of fans and contemporaries from all periods of his life's journey. In most places, but in truth, not all, the author manages to do this well.
The first half of the biography is somewhat anthropological in tone. Not surprisingly, a post-war Glasgow upbringing is somewhat alien to the antipodean author and Stephenson errs towards Angela's Ashes intonation as she describes her husband's tenement childhood (Scots readers may also find her regular translation of seemingly self-explanatory Scots phrases--which Connolly would use--obtuse). In contrast her examination of her experience of living with the comedian and his life from that point on is much better. Anecdotes which Connolly uses in his live shows pepper the text and laughs are raised as he tells of the time he was mistaken as a drug dealer on Speyside, of his cheeky friendships with cinema's elite and even through the more difficult times; the difficulty of balancing an almost manic humour with a troubled life. Pages turn quickly as we grow to understand more of what makes the man tick.
Certainly fans of Billy Connolly will enjoy this book. It is not perfect but it is certainly entertaining and should fill a gap in the market until Billy--with his half-remembered stories and off-centre view of the world--decides to let us into his head as well as his history. There's surely one ideal way to do this and that's by writing his story himself. --Helen Lamont [via]

Although the publisher has called Emotionally Weird a comic novel, it is essentially unclassifiable, both further-reaching and less "meaningful" than it first appears. Kate Atkinson's book begins with chapter 1 of a bad murder mystery being written by Effie Andrews for a creative-writing course at the University of Dundee in 1972. But the action soon shifts to a wintry island in the Hebrides, where Effie is trying to elicit the story of her parentage from her single mother, Nora, while spinning a humorous first-person narrative of her college life. Only near the end of the book does she finally wrench the story from her mother: Effie's bizarre origins; the identity of her father; and the whole unlikely tale of her mother's family.
Like a Borgesian labyrinth, with other stories thrown in, including a laughably convenient introduction of magic realism, it is impossible to know what to take seriously--or "jocoseriously," to paraphrase another of Atkinson's influences: the Joyce of Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. In her third novel, much of Atkinson's humor is incidental, even parenthetical. (We are told in passing, for example, that Effie's dissertation is called "Henry James: Man or Maze?") She is at her best when introducing her eccentric characters, such as the elderly Professor Cousins, who is sometimes lucid, sometimes not. "As with anyone in the department," Effie explains, "it wasn't always easy to distinguish between the two states. The university's strict laws of tenure dictated that he had to be dead at least three months before he could be removed from behind his desk." Professor Cousins, like the author, enjoys word games along the order of those in Alice in Wonderland, and Atkinson's use of Scottish idiom comes to function as a sort of word game. She also brings in a few killjoys (a militant feminist, a militant Christian, a literary theorist) to complicate an already loopy narrative and to spike the punch.
Janice smelt of piety and coal tar soap. She had recently become a Christian, a neophyte of a student Christian fellowship whose members roamed the corridors of Airlie, Belmont and Chalmers Halls looking for likely converts (the afraid, the alone, the abandoned) and those who needed to use the Bible to fill in the spaces where their personalities should have been.
As Emotionally Weird develops, Atkinson relies more and more on the postmodern gag of characters commenting on the unfolding action. There is no telling how she finally draws these disparate threads onto a single spool, but in the end, even the slightest subplots are neatly tied up and the most transient characters accounted for. --Regina Marler [via]More editions of Emotionally Weird:

Sebald an der Universität Zürich gehalten hat. Hauptthese und Kollektivvorwurf: Die deutsche Nachkriegsliteratur hat sich vor einer Thematisierung des Luftkrieges gedrückt. Von Ausnahmen abgesehen (Heinrich Bölls Roman "Der Engel schwieg", in den vierziger Jahren geschrieben und 1992(!) veröffentlicht; H. E. Nossacks Dokumentarerzählung "Der Untergang"), haben sich erst in den frühen Siebzigern Vertreter einer jüngeren Schriftstellergeneration diesem Phänomen zugewandt (Alexander Kluges Der Luftangriff auf Halberstadt am 8. April 1945; Hubert Fichtes Roman Grünspan).
Die literarische Verarbeitung des Luftkrieges bei Autoren wie Arno Schmidt, Peter de Mendelssohn, Hermann Kasack u.a., hält er wohl mit Recht für zu marginal, um seine These nachhaltig zu erschüttern. Der an jene gerichtete Vorwurf allerdings, "pseudoästhetische Effekte aus den Trümmern einer vernichteten Welt" zu produzieren, mag nun wohl etwas zu üppig dosierter polemischer Toback sein.
Die heftigen Proteste auf seine Vorlesung von Seiten der üblichen Verdächtigen auf der Linken und der naturgemäß unerwünschte Applaus auf der Rechten hat Sebald veranlaßt, der Buchveröffentlichung noch eine ergänzende Antwort an Gegner und falsche Freunde beizufügen.
Als Schmankerl zum Schluß, von der Sache her vielleicht nicht ganz logisch, bietet uns Sebald noch einen Essay über Alfred Andersch als Beispiel für Eitelkeit, Selbstüberschätzung und Anmaßung eines ansonsten durchaus sympathischen Autors. Wer die halbwegs deftige, aber grundsätzlich an der Sache interessierte Polemik schätzt, wird an diesem Buch seine Freude haben. Das Thema verdient in jedem Fall Interesse. --DTH [via]
