› Find signed collectible books: 'Census Records for Latin America and the Hispanic United States'
This is the largest and most complete survey of census records available for Latin America and the Hispanic United States. The result of exhaustive research in Hispanic archives, it contains a listing of approximately 4,000 separate censuses, each listed by country and thereunder alphabetically by locality, province, year, and reference locator. The enormous number of census records identified by Dr. Platt in the course of his twenty-five-year investigation will surprise and delight the serious researcher, and none more so than the family historian researching his Hispanic roots. In every colony of the Spanish Empire at least one major census was taken during the colonial period (1492-1825), although not all of these documents have been preserved. However, the stream of colonial reports on local population submitted to Spain for administrative, fiscal, military, and religious purposes swelled to a flood as the Spanish colonial administrative apparatus was reformed and expanded during the Intendency Period (1763-1825). The amount of material available to genealogists and family historians during this period of time is the largest accumulation of demographic information available for any major region of the world. Beginning in the late 1700s the Council of Indies, the administrative arm of the Crown in Spain, initiated an Empire-wide project of population management through systematic and regular census reports. All persons in a given area, together with information about their age, sex, residence, and marital status, were to be listed, by name, usually within family grouping, showing an implied or written relationship to the head of the household. The women were almost always recorded in these listings with their maiden names, as is common in all Latin American records. The first series of censuses beginning in 1776 resulted from orders issued to both civil and ecclesiastical officials that each take separate counts. The results were sporadic, but they were fairly extensive, and a large number of them have survived in one archive or another in Latin America or Spain. Many have been microfilmed by the Family History Library of the LDS Church in Salt Lake City, and they are identified here by film number. The largest number of censuses identified in this study, however, are those of the 1790 time period. While the majority of census listings are for Mexico, all countries of Spanish North America, Central America, and South America are covered. The modern states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas are found here under Mexico because they belonged to Mexico during the period in which most of the censuses were taken. Florida and Louisiana, on the other hand, are separate because of their loose ties to Mexico. Notwithstanding the Mexican emphasis, anyone even slightly interested in identifying the early inhabitants of Latin America and the Hispanic United States will find this book absolutely indispensable. Daniel Vickers examines the shifting labor strategies used by colonists as New England evolved from a string of frontier settlements to a mature society on the brink of industrialization. Lacking a means to purchase slaves or hire help, seventeenth-century settlers adapted the labor systems of Europe to cope with the shortages of capital and workers they encountered on the edge of the wilderness. As their world developed, changes in labor arrangements paved the way for the economic transformations of the nineteenth century.
By reconstructing the work experiences of thousands of farmers and fishermen in eastern Massachusetts, Vickers identifies who worked for whom and under what terms. Seventeenth-century farmers, for example, maintained patriarchal control over their sons largely to assure themselves of a labor force. The first generation of fish merchants relied on a system of clientage that bound poor fishermen to deliver their hauls in exchange for goods. Toward the end of the colonial period, land scarcity forced farmers and fishermen to search for ways to support themselves through wage employment and home manufacture. Out of these adjustments, says Vickers, emerged a labor market sufficient for industrialization. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'Genealogical Encyclopedia of the Colonial Americas: A Complete Digest of the Records of All the Countries of the Western Hemisphere'
The immense body of records of the colonial period in the Western Hemisphere presents a serious challenge to the researcher--in some cases even a stumbling block. In this work Ms. Schaefer has undertaken a systematic examination of the records to show the researcher where to find the most important genealogical records of the period and how to access them, all within the framework of a single encyclopedic volume. Equally important, she has defined the various classes of records in each country, identified as many of them as is practicable in a book of this size, provided historical background and brief sketches of the records themselves, added a description of the principal holdings of the major repositories of each country, and has interwoven selected reading lists throughout. The reader will appreciate, of course, that the subject matter is vast, covering the colonial records of all the Americas, from Latin America to the Caribbean and from the original Thirteen Colonies to Canada and New France, so of necessity the author has been at pains to be as comprehensive as possible. In the end, she has put together a magnificent reference work, one that will guide all researchers, beginners and professionals alike, to the most direct and reliable route to the colonial records of the Western Hemisphere. The range of the book is so remarkable that even the most seasoned researcher will find it breathtaking. [via]

The earliest census available for all of Ireland is for the year 1901, earlier censuses having been destroyed in the fire of 1922 at the Public Record Office in Dublin. Thus, with the exception of a handful of surviving census fragments, Ireland is entirely lacking in this key genealogical building block (if we exclude Griffith's famous mid-century Valuation of Ireland). But never let it be said that with a little ingenuity there isn't some means of reconstructing the missing censuses, or at least portions of them, and indeed in this work we have the nearest thing there is to a partial reconstruction of the 1841 and 1851 censuses of Northern
Ireland. The story behind this reconstruction is not without interest. The Old Age Pension Act was introduced in 1908, but as the civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths was not begun in Ireland until 1864, birth certificates were not available for persons of eligible age (70 years). For persons applying to the local Pensions Office without proof of age, the Pensions Officer sent particulars of the claimant to be checked in the 1841 and 1851 censuses held at the Public Record Office in Dublin. Details were recorded by the Search Officer and returned to the Pensions Office. Significantly, this checking was completed before the Public Record Office fire of 1922! The Old Age Pension search summaries for Northern Ireland, bound in books and held in Belfast, cover the counties of Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry, and Tyrone. In some cases a fairly complete family census record was written in the summary book, and it is from these summary books that this present series of census abstracts derives. (Most of the Old Age Pension records contain only brief notes recording whether or not a census record was found for the applicant and whether the age given by the applicant matched the census information.) Only a fraction of the population is covered by these summary book abstracts, wherein altogether a total of 23,000 persons are identified. Admittedly, this is but a small part of the whole, but it is nonetheless an extremely important body of genealogical data--previously thought unavailable! Generally speaking, the abstracts contain the following information: (1) the name of the head of household; (2) often his marriage date; (3) the wife's name (and sometimes her maiden name); (4) the place of residence for that year; (5) names of children and their ages; (6) names of other members of the family living in the household; and (7) persons having died in the ten years previous to the census. Entries are in alphabetical order and are cross-indexed for relatives, lodgers, visitors, and servants. There are also cross-indexes for married and maiden names of daughters and wives. Age Pension records and a handful of original census fragments have survived. This is due mainly to the catastrophic loss of records in the fire of 1922 at the Public Record Office (now the National Archives) in Dublin. Naming approximately 5,800 individuals, the Old Age Pension records are still the nearest thing we have to the actual censuses, and although the records for Northern Ireland are more complete, the Republic does at least have some representation. Used as proof of age in order to qualify for an old age pension, family data was extracted from the censuses of 1841 and 1851 and recorded in the Old Age Pension records summary books before the Public Record Office fire of 1922! Thus some census data was inadvertently salvaged, including (1) the name of the head of household; (2) his marriage date; (3) his wife's name; (4) his place of residence; (5) the names of his children; (6) the names of other family members living with him; (7) occasionally the names of servants, lodgers, and visitors; and (8) persons deceased in the ten years prior to the census. These several elements form the basis of this present work. Entries are in alphabetical order and are cross-indexed for relatives, lodgers, visitors, and servants. There are also cross-indexes for married and maiden names of daughters and wives. In addition, this work contains census fragments and miscellaneous census data from both the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (Belfast) and the National Archives in Dublin, including a list of surnames for Killeshandra Parish, County Cavan (1841), and the Union of Kilworth, County Cork (1851).
