Maggie's devilish ex-boyfriend and the commitment phobic Troy add in a delightful frisson of sexual tension.
Marian Keyes observations on the foibles of love and LA are laugh-out-loud funny, but there's a beguiling tenderness there too. By the time you reach the final full stop you'll be sighing with contentment, and just wishing that Marian would get a move on with the next book. --Eithne Farry [via]

Maria's approach to sex is complex--this is no mere revulsion arising from what she is now doing with her life. And then she meets a seductive young painter, who may or may not offer her a new path in life. But does she prefer to continue on the dark sexual odyssey she has embarked on, at the expense of real love?
There are echoes of DH Lawrence in Coelho's exploration of the sacred and spiritual aspects of sex and it's a brave author who tackles a subject that can so easily slip into strained seriousness. That never happens here, and Maria's journey is one that the reader willingly undertakes; the lesson she learns are lessons for the reader. --Barry Forshaw [via]

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Pearl, two major and long-neglected poems by an unknown author, derive from the West Midlands, an area of England with which Professor Tolkien felt a strong affinity, and where the alliterative tradition survived strongly in the fourteenth century. Sir Orfeo is a slighter, but no less attractive, poem from a different tradition, and was a special favorite of its translator.
These three translations represent with great skill the complete rhyme and alliterative schemes of the originals. They constitute a triumphant memorial to a life-long love of language and its expression in metre and verse·form. No scholar who reads them with attention will fail to find illumination, and no reader of Professor Tolkien's widely known imaginative works will feel disappointed, or fail to perceive in every page flashes of familiarity. It was, indeed, to the general reader that he wished to interpret these poems, and in doing so to lose neither the narrataive skill nor the heightened poetic expression of the originals.
Translation of this quality creates and recreates a work of great intrinsic value, and Professor Tolkien would rejoice if his part in this process contributes to a more general recognition that Gawain and Pearl is poetry of the highest attainment, coeval with Chaucer's and in no sense inferior.

With the help of a talking frog, loaned by Miss Tick, and an army of thieving, warmongering, nippy, boozy wee free men called the Nac Mac Feegle (who used to work for the Queen but rebelled), Tiffany sets off rescue her kin.
There's humour at every turn, and the situations that follow are both wonderfully dramatic and preposterously unreal. Pratchett really is the master of his genre and it's difficult to imagine a more entertaining read. (Age 10 and over) --John McLay [via]
