A hundred years of experience in dictionary publishing lies behind this edition of the famous Cassell's French Dictionary. After more than thirty impressions of the previous edition this entirely new dictionary has been compiled by a team of eminent linguists.
Reviewing the new dictionary The Times Educational Supplement said: "One handles this dictionary with the same pleasure that a craftsman feels when he finds that a tool, dulled and blunted by long use and passage of time, has come back sharpened and polished, refurbished and fit once more for long years of useful service. Everyone has his testing-points for a dictionary and the present reviewer, after submitting this one to the ordeal, awarded it a tentative full marks. Its minor defects pale into insignificance before the scholarly achievement of a work for which the publishers can rightly claim that it is 'the most authoritative, up-to-date and, within the limits of size, the most comprehensive French dictionary available.'" Based on the life of a little known writer, Rostand's hero has become a figure of theatrical legend: Cyrano, with the nose of a clown and the soul of a poet, is by turns comic and sad, as reckless in love as in war, and never at a loss for words. The text is accompanied by Notes and a full Introduction which sets the play in its literary and historical context. Christopher Fry's acclaimed translation into "chiming couplets" represents the homage of one verse dramatist to another. [via]

Edith Grossman's definitive English translation of the Spanish masterpiece. Widely regarded as the world's first modern novel, and one of the funniest and most tragic books ever written, Don Quixote chronicles the famous picaresque adventures of the noble knight-errant Don Quixote of La Mancha and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, as they travel through sixteenth-century Spain. Unless you read Spanish, you've never read Don Quixote.
"Though there have been many valuable English translations of Don Quixote, I would commend Edith Grossman's version for the extraordinarily high quality of her prose. The Knight and Sancho are so eloquently rendered by Grossman that the vitality of their characterization is more clearly conveyed than ever before. There is also an astonishing contextualization of Don Quixote and Sancho in Grossman's translation that I believe has not been achieved before. The spiritual atmosphere of a Spain already in steep decline can be felt throughout, thanks to her heightened quality of diction.Grossman might be called the Glenn Gould of translators, because she, too, articulates every note. Reading her amazing mode of finding equivalents in English for Cervantes's darkening vision is an entrance into a further understanding of why this great book contains within itself all the novels that have followed in its sublime wake."
From the Introduction by Harold Bloom
Miguel de Cervantes was born on September 29, 1547, in Alcala de Henares, Spain. At twenty-three he enlisted in the Spanish militia and in 1571 fought against the Turks in the battle of Lepanto, where a gunshot wound permanently crippled his left hand. He spent four more years at sea and then another five as a slave after being captured by Barbary pirates. Ransomed by his family, he returned to Madrid but his disability hampered him; it was in debtor's prison that he began to write Don Quixote. Cervantes wrote many other works, including poems and plays, but he remains best known as the author of Don Quixote. He died on April 23, 1616.

In Spanish, annotated edition. Born in Andalucia in 1824 Juan Valera y Alcalá Galiano was a writer, diplomat, politician, poet and literary critic. Among his eight novels, some unfinished, Pepita Jimenez undoubtedly stands out. The interior voice of the author is permanently present, and underlines his prime concerns: the quest for the aesthetic and philosophical ideal. "Pepita Jiménez" was first published in 1874. Based on real facts, in this novel the literary motivations and intention of the author appear with unusual strength: worlds full of philosophical meditation, in which love and religiousness marked characters struggle between their own consciences and desires. Written as a series of letters the main character is Luis de Vargas, a priest-to-be full of mistic fire. Don Luis, having been raised after his mother's decease by his uncle the Dean, travels to his longtime widowed father's town to meet a young widow who his father is willing to marry. She is Pepita Jimenez, very young, beautiful and sincere, who rapidly catches the youth's eye and makes him plunge into a whirlwind of contradictions: his loyalty towards his father, his vows and his heart desires collide while his uncle, the Dean tries to steer him away from temptation. Though quite predictable in its ending, Pepita Jimenez constitutes a delicious reading due to Valera's mastery of Spanish, a nowadays undisputable characteristic that however received more than his due share of criticism in his own times. Geared toward travelers and businesspeople rather than students, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning French on Your Own combines many of the functions of a dictionary, phrase book, tour guide, and grammar handbook into one. The emphasis here is on practical considerations. Important grammatical points get tied into real-world situations such as getting a haircut or buying a dress, making it easy to remember subjects as abstruse as reflexive pronouns and irregular verbs. Vocabulary, grammar, and accompanying exercises come paired with "cultural tidbits" to help travelers decipher the intricacies of French language, cuisine, and institutions. One cautionary note: although this book bills itself as an idiot-proof guide to "Learning French On Your Own" and features a comprehensive pronunciation guide, it's best to round out your education with an audiotape or a few sessions with a native speaker, lest you come out sounding like, well, an idiot.
