What are the fundamental tenets of African-Canadian feminism? What are the elements of feminist theory that have contributed to African-Canadian feminist thought? African-American feminists have influenced thinking and writing in Canada. As well, Black-Canadian feminists have published on a wide range of issues relating to Black women's lives, history and experience. Back to the Drawing Board builds on this existing literature and maps out a new space in which to articulate a stronger vision of African-Canadian feminism. While the essays focus on key concepts and debates that underlie Black feminist theory and challenge the dominant structures that continue to exclude Black women, the objective is to bring the plurality of African-Canadian women's voices and experiences into the centre of analysis.
To accomplish this, the editors draw on different theories and insights. The fourteen contributors come from different race and gender backgrounds and are committed to creating an empowering space where Black women can speak to and about each other and find a home for their words. They write on the subjects of Black-Canadian feminist thought, African-Canadian feminist historiography Black feminist political activism, white mainstream feminism as a liberatory movement Black women in the white feminism and anti-racist education Native education and spirituality that form and shape identity, how the media and law construct Black identity, the social consequences of interracial relationships. Includes a Glossary, Bibliography and Index.
Back to the Drawing Board initiates a dialogue critical for defining feminisms that validate the contributions and experiences of African-Canadian women. [via]

Combines the cruel humor of Candide with the allegorical panache of Animal Farm.Entertainment Weekly

A wise and funny book. The New York Times
"This trenchant feminist fantasy-satire mixes elements of Animal Farm, Rhinoceros and The Handmaid's Tale.... Imagination and absurdist humor mark [Carmen Dog] throughout, and Emshwiller is engaging even when most savage about male-female relationships."Booklist
"Her fantastic premise allows Emshwiller canny and frequently hilarious insights into the damaging sex-role stereotypes both men and women perpetuate."
Publishers Weekly
The debut title in our Peapod Classics line, Carol Emshwillers genre-jumping debut novel is a dangerous, sharp-eyed look at men, women, and the world we live in.
Everything is changing: women are turning into animals, and animals are turning into women. Pooch, a golden setter, is turning into a beautiful womanalthough she still has some of her canine traits: she just can't shuck that loyalty thingand her former owner has turned into a snapping turtle. When the turtle tries to take a bite of her own baby, Pooch snatches the baby and runs. Meanwhile, there's a dangerous wolverine on the loose, men are desperately trying to figure out what's going on, and Pooch discovers what she really wants: to sing Carmen.
Carmen Dog is the funny feminist classic that inspired writers Pat Murphy and Karen Joy Fowler to create the James Tiptree Jr. Memorial Award.

Women Discovering and Celebrating Their Own Spiritual Paths
In the last few years, the women's spirituality movement has both grown and deepened. Women of all political and sectarian beliefs have embraced a spirituality freed from the constraints of traditional creeds; a spirituality that is uniquely their own.
The Essential Handbook of Women's Spirituality and Rituals is the essential tool for women seeking their own spiritual paths. Renowned feminist scholar Barbara G. Walker gently leads the reader on a journey of discovery; a journey that results in results in a rich and vibrant inner life.
In the course of this book, Walker explores a variety of techniques, rituals, and ceremonies that will both enhance and vivify the life of the spirit. Among the topics explored are:
- How to form a women's spirituality group - Holidays for women to celebrate - Creating your own personal altar - How to participate in guided meditations - The names of the goddesses - Celebrating female rites of passage.
Walker has performed an invaluable service to women everywhere. She has provided the basic tools for the journey to the self, but has also shown the ways in which a spiritual practice can be tailored to the needs of individual women. [via]

Bombshell spies, slayers, witches and assassins: kick-ass female stars have taken over blockbuster movies like Charlie's Angels and Kill Bill as well as prime time TV hits such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed. These characters kill as quickly as they break down in tears, and beat guys up as easily as they toss them into bed. With very few exceptions, they're young, white, beautiful, straight and skinny. How are young women to respond to these images of women who fight (or bite) back? As the product of corporate media, are these icons of female power merely cons?
This one-of-a-kind anthology of new fiction, essays, and comics recognizes the seductiveness as well as the limitations of such contemporary pop culture heroines. Contributors including Nalo Hopkinson, Larissa Lai, Shary Boyle, Nikki Stafford, Mariko Tamaki, Sonja Ahlers and Sherwin Tjia critique constructs of female power and invent alternative role models.

--Pascale Wester [via]

A founder of Columbia University SDS, and a veteran of the Civil Rights and anti-Vietnam War Movements, David Gilbert joined the Weather Underground Organization in the late í60's. After more than 10 years of clandestine resistance, he was captured in the course of an armed action in 1981. Gilbert has been a revolutionary political prisoner for 22 years, continuing his work as an AIDs activist, and author from behind the walls. This first collection of David Gilbert's prison writings is a unique contribution to our understanding of the most ambitious and audacious attempts by white anti-imperialists to build an underground movement "within the belly of the beast." With unsparing honesty (and unfailing humor), he discusses the errors and successes of the WUO and their allies; the pitfalls of racism, sexism and ego in revolutionary organizations; and the possibilities and perils facing today's growing anti-imperialist resistance. Includes forewords by political prisoners Marilyn Buck and Sundiata Acoli. "This book stands alone in the growing number of books about the 1960s, the anti-Vietnam War Movement, and the Weather Underground Organization because of David's willingness to own it and analyze it. His discussion of the strength's and weaknesses of this history, the role of armed struggle, the rise of terrorism, the continued aggression of the U.S. government speak directly to the concerns of everyone working for justice anywhere. David's discussion of these topics is freer, more alive, and more honest than any I have read. This book should stimulate learning from our political prisoners, but more importantly it challenges us to work to free them, and in doing so take the best of our history forward." [Susan Rosenberg, former U.S. political prisoner] "David Gilbert is a warrior in the most profound sense of the term. Imbued with a near-crystalline clarity of principle, the indomitable courage to live his life in accordance with the values he holds true, and, most importantly, his every action guided by the immensity of his love for the wretched of this earth, he is truly an inspiration. Predictably, given the strength of Gilbert's character, his writings are offered as tools -- nay, WEAPONS -- in the ongoing struggle for liberation. They are thus of incalculable value to each of us who aspires to the attainment of freedom, justice and dignity for ALL people." [Ward Churchill [via]

This collection of six sensual, yet explicit short stories is thought to have been written for an Oklahoma oil millionaire, Roy M. Johnson. Anais Nin is said to have paid a dollar per page to produce typescripts of explicit erotica for his own private amusement. In 'Alice' a couple spying on another couple screwing in a public park become involved in a steamy group sex scene. In 'Florence', a New York office girl enjoys sex for the first time sleeping with two men in quick succession! In 'Memories' a man recounts his youth and his teenage initiation into sex by a variety of older women.
This facsimile reproduction also contains an explicit sex manual, Love's Cyclopaedia, originally published with the stories. The intorduction by Dr. C.J. Schiener tells the story of the book's first clandestine edition by New York publisher Samuel Roth during the 1940s and all the evidence for attributing this anonymous work to Anais Nin. [via]
