It is the near-future, and in the wake of the Meme Wars, the world's population is much reduced, although, thanks to One True, the winning software meme, humankind is now a cooperative, noncompetitive species. One True manages the survivors by controlling both memory and the autonomic nervous system, and a copy runs in the mind of everyone on earth. Or almost everyone. Occasional cowboys, such as the one known as Lobo, purge themselves of One True, unplug from the global network, and survive by raiding civilized settlements.
Currie Culver is the bounty hunter who brought Lobo down--killing him, he believed, years ago in the Rocky Mountains. When One True informs Currie that Lobo survives, Currie must ride out once again on Lobo's trail. What follows is a splendid mix of Western, moral argument, and philosophical treatise. In a skirmish, Currie's copy of One True is damaged, and he is taken to a hideout where the wily Lobo begins to deprogram him. All, of course, is not as it seems.
It could be said that Barnes, best known for the juvenile space novel Orbital Resonance and the decidedly adult disaster tale Mother of Storms, occasionally allows his characters to degenerate into talking heads, but for most readers the meat of the matter will be the hugely enjoyable (if rather basic) examination of that place where the interests of the individual, society, and human identity collide. --Luc Duplessis [via]

Editorial Review - Kirkus Reviews From the author of Downbelow Station: a believable and well worked-out tale about a human child raised by aliens. Duun is a furry, bipedal, cat-like alien whose people have a modern technology--though their social system is medieval-Japanese-flavored, based on squabbling guilds. And, when a human spaceship entered this solar system 17 years ago, it was Duun who led an attack that destroyed the intruder: severely wounded during the attack, Duun took some cells from one of the slain Earthmen and produced a clone, Thorn, whom he has raised as a son. Thorn, then, is raised in the brutal rigors of the hatani way. (Duun is a hatani--a sort of wandering samurai/judge; the hatani are jealously opposed by the other guilds.) The clone-youth proves to be an apt pupil. But, though he is told little of his origins until he passes the test of hatani-ship, Thorn soon takes on heavy responsibilies: he must minimize a potentially disastrous inter-guild war; and he also must learn the language and culture of his human forbears. . . and attempt to communicate with them. None of this is especially profound or particularly original. However, it is fast-moving, tautly written, and pleasingly sure-footed--soothing, if not moving. [via]

In a world policed by telepaths, Ben Reich plans to commit a crime that hasn't been heard of in 70 years: murder. That's the only option left for Reich, whose company is losing a 10-year death struggle with rival D'Courtney Enterprises. Terrorized in his dreams by The Man With No Face and driven to the edge after D'Courtney refuses a merger offer, Reich murders his rival and bribes a high-ranking telepath to help him cover his tracks. But while police prefect Lincoln Powell knows Reich is guilty, his telepath's knowledge is a far cry from admissible evidence. [via]

The fast-paced sequel to There Will be Dragons is a rollicking adventure above and below the high seas with dragons, orcas, beautiful mermaids-and the irrepressible Bast the Wood Elf, a cross between Legolas and Mae West. Duke Edmund Talbot has been assigned a simple mission: Go to the Southern Isles and make contact with the scattered mer-folk-those who, before the worldwide collapse of technology, had altered their bodies in the shape of mythical sea-dwelling creatures. He must convince them to side with the Freedom Coalition in the battles against the fascist dictators of New Destiny. Just a simple diplomatic mission. That requires the service of a dragon-carrier and Lieutenant Herzer Herrick, the most blooded of the Blood Lords. Because New Destiny has plans of its own. [via]

When humanoids are genetically produced for capital gain, what are their human rights?
Leo Graf was just your average highly efficient engineer: mind your own business, fix what's wrong, and move on to the next job. Everything neat and according to spec, just the way he liked it. But all that changed on his assignment to the Cay Habitat. Leo was to teach welding to a secretly produced batch of humanoid workers genetically engineered with two additional arms instead of legs to be ideally suited to working in free fall. Could he just stand there and allow the exploitation of hundreds of helpless children merely to enhance the bottom line of a heartless megacorporation? Leo hadn't anticipated a situation where the right thing to do was neither safe nor in the rules.
Leo adopted a thousand quaddies. Now all he had to do was teach them to be free.

This classic novel of the weird supernatural, first published in 1908, was an important influence on H. P. Lovecraft. In the ruins of an ancient stone house in Ireland is found the diary of an elderly man who lived alone with his sister and their pets, and who longed for his lost love. The diary tells of how the man explores a cyclopean cavern beneath the house and fights off swarms of white pig-like monsters pouring up from below. Then, in a visionary sequence, he breaks through to an alternate space-time dimension and sees a doppelganger of his house on a vast desolate plain. The prose is hokey at times, but the strange mood evoked by the other-dimensional setting is powerful indeed. As acclaimed horror writer T. E. D. Klein says, "Never has a book so hauntingly conveyed a sense of terrible loneliness and isolation." [via]

In the middle of a vast terraforming project, planetary engineers introduce the seemingly harmless species known as the Quill to the newly created environments, but the project goes awry and ships full of eager colonists are suddenly unable to land on planets that have become deadly dangerous to them. This situation is a generation old when Dr. Gail Smith arrives at Thromberg Station in search of the one human being rumoured to have survived contact with the Quill. When Gail finds Aaron Pardell, their meeting, and the subsequent search for a solution to the Quill problem, will determine the fate of every other character in Julie Czerneda's In the Company of Others.
At the beginning, with its space station crowded with uneasy refugees, the perceived hostility of the Earth government, and an alienated young man at the heart of the story, In the Company of Others reads a lot like a long-lost C.J. Cherryh novel. But where Cherryh creates tension mainly through interior and exterior dialogue, Czerneda's storytelling style is more action-oriented: the drama and tension arise as we learn enough about the characters to anticipate their reactions to the decisions and acts of others. And there's plenty of tension and action as the novel builds to a grand finale with Gail, Aaron, the Earth military, the Quill, and the stranded refugees all locked in a desperate confrontation. A fitting resolution guarantees that SF readers looking for a good space-adventure story, well told, will find In the Company of Others an enjoyable experience. --Greg L. Johnson [via]

On Basilisk Station (or "HH1" as it's known to the faithful) is the first installment in David Weber's cult hit Honor Harrington series, which has charmed the socks off schoolgirls and sailors alike. Honor--the heroine of this fast-paced, addictive space opera--is a polished, plucky bulldog of a naval officer, part Horatio Hornblower, part Miles Vorkosigan, part Captain Janeway, and with a razor-clawed telepathic cat thrown over her shoulder for good measure.
The series' kickoff puts a giddy Commander Harrington at the helm of her first serious starship, the HMS Fearless. But her excitement quickly fades--political maneuvering by top brass in the Manticoran navy has left her light cruiser outfitted with a half-baked experimental weapons system. Against all odds (just the way Honor likes it), she still manages a clever coup in tactical war games, a feat that earns her accolades--and enemies. The politicians she's offended banish her to a galactic backwater, Basilisk Station. But that outpost soon proves to be a powder keg, and it's up to Harrington and the Fearless crew to thwart the aggressive plans of the Haven Republic. A perfect mix of military SF and high adventure--if you enjoy your tour, re-up with HH2, The Honor of the Queen. --Paul Hughes [via]

If you've seen the progressively cheesier Planet of the Apes movies of 1968-1973, you may be shocked to learn the first movie was adapted from an intelligent, ironic, and literate novel. You'll be less surprised when you learn the original novel Planet of the Apes was written by Pierre Boulle, author of The Bridge over the River Kwai.
In the novel Planet of the Apes, the three Frenchmen making the first interstellar journey discover a remarkably Earth-like world orbiting Betelgeuse--Earth-like, with one crucial difference: The humans are dumb beasts, and the apes are intelligent. Captured during a terrifying manhunt, locked in a cage, and ignorant of the simian language, Ulysse Merou struggles to convince the apes that he possesses intelligence and reason. But if he proves he is not an animal, he may seal his own doom.
Like the first movie, the novel Planet of the Apes has a twist ending, but a twist of a different--yet equally shocking--sort. --Cynthia Ward [via]

According to Larry Niven, time travel is logically impossible--sheer fantasy. So when time-agent Svetz heads back from polluted future Earth in search of extinct animals, he tends to sideslip into fantastic, fictional worlds. In short stories collected in The Flight of the Horse (1973), his quests for a horse, a Gila monster, and a whale unearthed a unicorn, a dragon, and Moby-Dick. Less comic but equally daft, Rainbow Mars combines both space and time travel to explore Mars in the deep past, before it was a dead world. Naturally it's populated by a menagerie of warring fictional Martians from Edgar Rice Burroughs (multi-armed sword-wielders), H.G. Wells (tentacles and heat rays), and less familiar authors. Svetz and companions are soon in big trouble. Complications include a gigantic alien tree extending into Mars's orbit--an organic version of the space elevator in Arthur C. Clarke's The Fountains of Paradise. One of these useful "beanstalks" on Earth seems a highly desirable facility, but there are hidden drawbacks, and most of the multiplying timelines lead to disaster. This is fun for experienced SF readers who can follow the in-jokes and the switchback ride through tangled alternative histories. The earlier, even funnier Svetz stories are included as a bonus. --David Langford, Amazon.co.uk [via]

The third story in this volume takes place 16,000 years in the future. When you realize that the 33 stories are ordered chronologically, you begin to grasp the scale of Cordwainer Smith's creation. Regimes, technologies, planets, moralities, religions, histories all rise and fall through his millennia.
These are futuristic tales told as myth, as legend, as a history of a distant and decayed past. Written in an unadorned voice reminiscent of James Tiptree Jr., Smith's visions are dark and pessimistic, clearly a contrast from the mood of SF in his time; in the 1940s, '50s, and '60s it was still thought that science would cure the ills of humanity. In Smith's tales, space travel takes a horrendous toll on those who pilot the ships through the void. After reaching perfection, the lack of strife stifles humanity to a point of decay and stagnation; the Instrumentality of Mankind arises in order to stir things up. Many stories describe moral dilemmas involving the humanity of the Underpeople, beings evolved from animals into humanlike forms.
Stories not to be missed in this collection include "Scanners Live in Vain," "The Dead Lady of Clown Town," "Under Old Earth," "The Crime and the Glory of Commander Suzdal," "Mother Hitton's Littul Kittons," and the truly disturbing "A Planet Called Shayol." Serious SF fans should not pass up the chance to experience Cordwainer Smith's complex, distinctive vision of the far future. --Bonnie Bouman [via]

When she and her companion are attacked on the streets of Aourd, a backwater planet on the fringe of regular trade routes, Sira gets separated from her companion Barac. Her memory gone, she's left with only a strange compulsion to seek the help of Jason Morgan, an independent trader and starship captain. Sira's amnesia is so pervasive that she has even forgotten which species she belongs to. That species is the Clan, a telepathic race that has kept itself aloof, refusing to join in the Trade Pact formed by human beings and a host of other species. With some persuasion, Sira finds refuge on Morgan's ship, the Silver Fox. As they leave Aourd, the real quest for answers begins. Who has suppressed Sira's memories, and why is she running away?
A Thousand Words for Stranger begins slowly, with the introduction of characters and exposition necessary to establish the feel of Czerneda's universe. The book picks up steam as each revealed secret leads to a new mystery. It's an old writer's trick, but the Czerneda uses it to good effect, pulling the reader into a story that becomes more compelling with every page. The concept of an adventure story set in a multispecies universe with good aliens, bad aliens, and unexpected surprises along the way is, of course, hardly new. What matters, then, is how good a job the writer does in telling the story and portraying the characters. In A Thousand Words for Stranger, Julie Czerneda handles that task very well indeed. --Greg L. Johnson [via]

The world of Jalna had revealed many secrets to the Sholan-Human teams sent there on a rescue mission. They had discovered one of the methods Valtegans used to control other races, had learned how deceitful one of their own allies had been, and were about to begin negotiations for an alliance with several newly met races. Yet the planetary conflicts had led to the injured Carrie and Kusac being placed in cryo on a non-Sholan vessel, with Kaid desperately trying to rush them back to Sholan medical facilities. But before they could reach their rendezvous point, the ship they were on was caught in a Valtegan trap, leaving Kaid barely enough time to send Carrie's and Kusac's lifepods into space in the hope that they'd be found by friendly forces. Kaid was certain he and his people were doomed until a massive vessel suddenly materialized, scooping up both Kaid's ship and the Valtegan foe. Now all of them were prisoners of a completely unknown people. And only time would tell whether they'd fallen into the clutches of an even more deadly enemy than the Valtegans.... [via]
