On a gusty March day in 1016, as King Canute was completing his subjugation of the north of England, he commanded the appearance of teh greatest of his northern subjects, Earl Uhtred of Northumbria, at a place called Wiheal, probably near Tadcaster in Yorkshire. Uhtred had been loyal to Canute's predecessor, Ethelred the Unready, but realized that Canute had an overwhelming upper hand, and came with forty retainers to Wiheal to make his submission. However, as Richard Fletcher recounts in his opening to this book, "Treachery was afoot". Uhtred and his men were ambushed and slaughtered by an old enemy of Uhtred's called Thurbrand, with Canute's connivance. This book analyzes the long bloodfeud which resulted from this act of treachery. [via]

It is impossible to understand the Second World War without understanding Winston Churchill, the bold British Prime Minister who showed himself to be one of the greatest statesmen any nation has ever known. This lengthy biography is a single-volume abridgment of a massive, eight-volume work that took a quarter-century to write. It covers Churchill's entire life, highlighting not only his exploits during the Second World War, but also his early belief in technology and how it would revolutionize warfare in the 20th century. Churchill learned how to fly a plane before the First World War, and was also involved in the development of both the tank and anti-aircraft defense. But he truly showed his unmatched mettle during his country's darkest moments: "His finest hour was the leadership of Britain when it was most isolated, most threatened, and most weak; when his own courage, determination, and belief in democracy became at one with the nation," writes Gilbert. There are several wonderful books available on Churchill, but this is probably the best place to start. [via]

By 1700, France and Italy already had dictionaries of their own, and it became a matter of national pride that England should rival them. Dr Johnson rose to the challenge, turning over the garret of his London home to the creation of his Dictionary. He imagined it would take three years. Eight years later it was finally published, full of idiosyncrasies, but complete nevertheless. It would become the most important British cultural monument of the eighteenth century. This is the story of Johnson's attempt to define each and every word. In wonderfully engaging chapters, Hitchings describes Johnson's adventure -- his ambition and vision, his moments of despair, the mistakes he made along the way and his ultimate triumph. [via]

Architecture historian Timothy Mowl (Architecture Without Kings, An Insular Rococo) opens this excellent, elegant, entertaining defense of Elizabethan and Jacobean design, in all its gaudy excess, by comparing it to the two preeminent quill-dippers of its period: "Neither Shakespeare nor Ben Jonson was a 'Classical' playwright.... but the earthy richness of their imagery and the uninhibited gusto of their vocabulary has never been held against them." That's the kind of open mind Mowl would like us to bring to the churches, castles, townhouses, furnishings, and gardens of the era that began with Elizabeth I's accession to the throne in 1558 and ended with James I's death in 1625--an era whose architecture has traditionally been seen as a bombastic, busy melange of Tudor, timbered vernacular, and manic decorative strapwork until Inigo Jones's Whitehall Banqueting House of 1619 signaled a shift to "tasteful" classical purity.
At opening our minds Mowl richly succeeds. Not that, if you're of a classicist or otherwise minimalist bent (like this reviewer), you'll end up liking the architecture of this period any more than you ever have. It's just that Mowl is such a playful, eloquent writer and an erudite social historian that he raises what might have been a prosaic overview to the highest level possible--an absorbing, detail-packed narrative of a fascinating era, as told through its church tombs and castle towers, tapestries and theater sets, knot gardens, armchairs, and tableware. Even as fine full-color photographs take us through the grounds and interiors of such sites as St. Mary the Virgin at Bottesford, London's Staple Inn (which, with its timbered Snow White stripes, couldn't look more like what we commonly call "Tudor"), and Kenilworth Castle (one of the queen's many playgrounds), Mowl is introducing us--through a fine array of excerpts from period books, plays, and letters--to a dazzling cast of characters including writers John Donne, Edmund Spenser, and Christopher Marlowe, plus several noblemen who built some of the great manors of the age. (A final chapter, on the "Jacobethan" revival of the 19th century, leads out into a glossary of terms, a directory of estates to visit in the UK, and a bibliography.) But certainly the figure that sets the dominant tone here is the remarkable Elizabeth. It was the shrewdness and mettle of this beloved "Virgin Queen" that brought strength and stability to England in the precarious wake of its split from Rome. But it was her love of music, theater, and all things grandiose and romantic, Mowl persuasively argues, that gave birth to an exuberant, eclectic architecture whose aim, in his words, was "to be unique, not correct." --Timothy Murphy [via]

Simon Jenkins has travelled the length and breadth of England to select his thousand best churches. Organised by county, each church is described - often with delightful asides - and given a star-rating from one to five. All of the county sections are prefaced by a map locating each church, and lavishly illustrated with colour photos from the Country Life archive. Jenkins contends that these churches house a gallery of vernacular art without equal in the world. Here, he brings that museum to public attention. [via]

Mistress Mary is quite contrary until she helps her garden grow. Along the way, she manages to cure her sickly cousin Colin, who is every bit as imperious as she. These two are sullen little peas in a pod, closed up in a gloomy old manor on the Yorkshire moors of England, until a locked-up garden captures their imaginations and puts the blush of a wild rose in their cheeks; "It was the sweetest, most mysterious-looking place any one could imagine. The high walls which shut it in were covered with the leafless stems of roses which were so thick, that they matted together.... 'No wonder it is still,' Mary whispered. 'I am the first person who has spoken here for ten years.'" As new life sprouts from the earth, Mary and Colin's sour natures begin to sweeten. For anyone who has ever felt afraid to live and love, The Secret Garden's portrayal of reawakening spirits will thrill and rejuvenate. Frances Hodgson Burnett creates characters so strong and distinct, young readers continue to identify with them even 85 years after they were conceived. (Ages 9 to 12) [via]

Pepys's diary has long been recognized as one of the most remarkable in the English language, but it has been impossible until recent times to print it as he wrote it. Little academic work had been done on it and legal restrictions prevented the publication of its frankest passages in which Pepys describes his vigorous love life. In the pages reproduced here, the public events of the 1660s - the politics of the Restoration, the Dutch War, the Plague, the Great Fire of London - are interwoven with a diverting account of Pepys colourful private life. On the surface the sisters were busy, accomplished girls, but the real story beneath their composed image was quite different - no one who reads Princesses will ever look in the same way again at the calm, composed women in Gainsborough's portraits. The King may have believed that his six daughters were happy to live celibately with him and Queen Charlotte at Windsor, but secretly, as Flora Fraser's absorbing narrative of royal repression and sexual licence shows, the sisters enjoyed startling freedom. The historical searchlight has been turned with great intensity and sympathy on George III and his family, and the sweep of history between the Regency and Victorian eras. Flora Fraser has written an extraordinary (and surprisingly modern) story with real authority, wit and elegance. [via]

As a historical document Diarmaid MacCulloch's 750-page narrative Reformation: Europe's House Divided 1490-1700 has all the key ingredients. MacCulloch, a professor of history as the Church of Oxford University, is an articulate and vibrant writer with a strong guiding intelligence. The structure is sensible, starting with the main characters who influenced reforms, then spreads out to the regional concerns and social intellectual themes of the era. He even fast forwards into American Christianity--showing how this historical era influences modern times.
MacCulloch has written what is widely considered to be the authoritative account of the Reformation--a critical juncture in the history of Christianity. "It is impossible to understand modern Europe without understanding these 16th-century upheavals in Latin Christianity" he writes. "They represented the greatest fault line to appear in Christian culture since the Latin and Greek halves of the Roman Empire went their separate ways a thousand years before; they produced a house divided." The resulting split between the Catholics and Protestants still divides Christians throughout the Western world. It affects interpretations of the Bible, beliefs about baptisms, and event how much authority is given to religious leaders. The division even fuels an ongoing war. What makes MacCulloch's account rise above previous attempts to interpret the Reformation is the breadth of his research. Rather than limit his narrative to the actions of key theologians and leaders of the era--Luther, Zingli, Calvin, Loyola, Cranmer, Henry VIII and numerous popes--MacCulloch sweeps his narrative across the culture, politics and lay people of Renaissance Western Europe. This broad brush approach touches upon many fascinating discussions surrounding the Reformation, including his belief that the Latin Church was probably not as "corrupt and ineffective" as Protestants tend to portray it. In fact, he asserts that it "generally satisfied the spiritual needs of the late medieval people."
MacCulloch is a top-notch historian--he uncovers material and theories that will seem fresh and inspired to Reformation scholars as well as lay readers. --Gail Hudson, Amazon.com [via]
