Quite a tall order when you consider that most of us live our lives in a permanent state of flux, questioning our ideals and values and fighting a daily battle with the lack of self-confidence that stops us from taking risks of any kind. But, in The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Covey manages to make it sound as if changing the way we look at ourselves and the world around us so that we can become more successful both personally and professionally an absolute doddle. He defines the "habits" as "the intersection of knowledge, skill and desire" and states that the "Seven Habits" of the title are not mutually exclusive, but rather when developed together help to form a well-rounded, sensitive, confident and effective human being. As with many self-help books, much of what you read here is based on basic common sense and can at times be irritatingly obvious. However, what Covey manages to do so successfully is to break down the barriers which prevent all of us from taking a long hard look at ourselves, and then gradually introduces new rules which allow us to move first from dependence to independence and then towards the ultimate goal of interdependence. But of course, the only real way to test the value of The Habits--be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think "win/win", seek first to understand and then to be understood, synergise, sharpen the saw-- is to work on them. Every year the United Nations ranks countries according to their standards of living in the world. Almost invariably, Canada comes up in the top spot, leaving cynical Canadians to wonder, What the heck? In The Efficient Society, self-described "professional philosopher" Joseph Heath goes a long way toward providing the answer. While certainly Canada is deficient in many areas, he notes, the country's overall operational efficiency is what boosts it to the top of the standard-of-living index. Drawing on social contract theory, on the conundrum known as "the prisoner's dilemma" (wherein two or more people acting purely in self-interest results in worst-case scenarios for everyone), and examples from pop culture sources such as Star Trek, American Beauty, and books by cyberpunk novelists Bruce Sterling and Neal Stephenson, Heath sheds light on why societies function the way they do, and how this affects their citizens. For instance, it's the author's contention that the U.S.'s determined quest for liberty curbs that country's ability to serve its citizens effectively. "The most serious inefficiencies in American society come from people's unwillingness to pay taxes (on the grounds that taxes interfere with individual liberty)," surmises Heath. "This is what produces the well-known 'private opulence, public squalour' that characterizes American cities."
Heath's main contention is that Canadians' willingness to let the government step in and maintain programs for "the public good" is what basically sets the country apart. On the issue of gun control, for instance, he says that the argument for bearing arms "may sound persuasive, but it misses the point.... The benefits come from knowing that other people don't have guns. Thus the outcome that everyone wants--a safer society--cannot be achieved through the exercise of individual rights. It can be achieved only if everyone is denied certain rights." But Heath is no ideologue--he criticizes both the right and the left, and it's unlikely anti-globalization crusaders will be putting this book up on the shelf next to Naomi Klein's No Logo after reading his defence of Wal-Mart and Nike. That said, Heath isn't entirely in favour of the status quo either. He notes how "the proliferation of desire" (as fanned by advertising) is the "reason you can't get no satisfaction." Nevertheless, The Efficient Society is a fairly convincing argument that Canada is, in the words of the book's subtitle, "as close to utopia as it gets." --Shawn Conner [via]

However, it still operates from the decidedly Western notion that if we could just get really, really organised, we could turn ourselves into 24/7 productivity machines. (To wit, Allen, whom the New Economy bible Fast Company has dubbed "the personal productivity guru", suggests that instead of meditating on crouching tigers and hidden dragons while you wait for a plane, you should unsheathe that high-tech sabre known as the mobile phone and attack that list of calls you need to return.)
As whole-life-organising systems go, Allen's is pretty good, even fun and therapeutic. It starts with the exhortation to take every unaccounted-for scrap of paper in your workstation that you can't junk. The next step is to write down every unaccounted-for gotta-do cramming your head onto its own scrap of paper. Finally, throw the whole stew into a giant "in-basket".
That's where the processing and prioritising begin; in Allen's system, it get a little convoluted at times, rife as it is with fancy terms, subterms, and sub-subterms for even the simplest concepts. Thank goodness the spine of his system is captured on a straightforward, one-page flowchart that you can pin over your desk and repeatedly consult without having to refer back to the book. That alone is worth the purchase price. Also of value is Allen's ingenious Two-Minute Rule: if there's anything you absolutely must do that you can do right now in two minutes or less, then do it now, thus freeing up your time and mind tenfold over the long term. It's common sense advice so obvious that most of us completely overlook it, much to our detriment. Julie Morgenstern has written an organizing book that covers a new way of looking at the task of organizing effectively without labeling or blaming the person behind the lack of organization. Rather, she says, people who don't organize just never learned how to organize, through no fault of their own--after all, it's not a skill that's taught in school. That said, she gets down to work helping you figure out an organizing system that will really work for you, not a system based on cookie-cutter filing concepts or special storage units.
Morgenstern's "from the inside out" system begins by laying out the possible reasons for a failure of organization: technical errors (like having a complex organizing system that breaks down), external realities (like not enough space for your belongings), and psychological obstacles (like fear of failure--or success). Then, her Analyze and Strategize steps help create a plan of action based on your needs and goals, and the brief chapter called "Attack: Getting the Job Done" offers basic ideas for making space. The largest section of the book, "Applying What You've Learned," addresses the specifics of organizing workspaces, home offices, living spaces, and storage areas. Each section has a "How Long Will It Take?" box that gives a realistic time estimate, and Morgenstern's "Julie's No-Brainer Toss List" for each area gives the permission and encouragement that most of us have been waiting for to get rid of things we'll never use again. The section at the end, "Tackling Time and Technology," is worth its weight in DayTimers and PalmPilots.
