In his two most recent bestselling books, American Dynasty and Wealth and Democracy, Kevin Phillips established himself as a powerful critic of the political and economic forces that ruleand imperilthe United States, tracing the ever more alarming path of the emerging Republican majoritys rise to power. Now Phillips takes an uncompromising view of the current age of global overreach, fundamentalist religion, diminishing resources, and ballooning debt under the GOP majority. With an eye to the past and a searing vision of the future, Phillips confirms what too many Americans are still unwilling to admit about the depth of our misgovernment.

Frederic Bastiat, who was born two hundred years ago, was a leader of the French laissez-faire tradition in the first half of the nineteenth century. He was influenced by Cobden's Anti-Corn Law League and became a convinced free trader. Joseph Schumpeter described Bastiat as 'the most brilliant economic journalist who ever lived'.
In The Law, written in 1850, the year of his death, Bastiat recognises the central importance of the law and morality in a free society. He was concerned that government was using the 'law' to become too active a participant in the economy whilst devoting too little attention to protecting life and liberty.
This Occasional Paper, which reprints an English translation of The Law, includes a new introduction by Professor Norman Barry of the University of Buckingham which places Bastiat's views in their historical context and explains their continuing relevance today. [via]

Capital, one of Marx's major and most influential works, was the product of thirty years close study of the capitalist mode of production in England, the most advanced industrial society of his day. This new translation of Volume One, the only volume to be completed and edited by Marx himself, avoids some of the mistakes that have marred earlier versions and seeks to do justice to the literary qualities of the work. The introduction is by Ernest Mandel, author of Late Capitalism, one of the only comprehensive attempts to develop the theoretical legacy of Capital. [via]

Written during the winter of 1857-8, the "Grundrisse" was considered by Marx to be the first scientific elaboration of communist theory. A collection of seven notebooks on capital and money, it both develops the arguments outlined in the Communist Manifesto (1848) and explores the themes and theses that were to dominate his great later work "Capital". Here, for the first time, Marx set out his own version of Hegel's dialectics and developed his mature views on labour, surplus value and profit, offering many fresh insights into alienation, automation and the dangers of capitalist society. Yet while the theories in "Grundrisse" make it a vital precursor to "Capital", it also provides invaluable descriptions of Marx's wider-ranging philosophy, making it a unique insight into his beliefs and hopes for the foundation of a communist state. International Economics, the best-selling textbook in the field, is written by two of the world's preeminent economists. Both the real trade portion of the book and the monetary portion are divided into a core of chapters focused on theory, followed by chapters applying the theory to major policy questions, past and current. The Sixth Edition has been throughly revised to reflect the changes of today's global economic landscape, including the unprecedented expansion of globalization, the increasingly crucial nature of international economic relations, the gains from trade, and recent anti-globalization controversies such as the continuing debate over the optimal level of trade. Consistent with previous editions, the text presents an integrated treatment of the Ricardian model, specific factors, factor endowments, and imperfect competition models of trade, along with in-depth analysis of empirical evidence. It covers the effects and causes of trade policy, including strategic trade policy and the income-distribution effects of trade. The book also provides a unified model of open-economy macroeconomics, based on an asset-market approach to exchange rate determination with a central role for expectations. Robert Skidelsky completes his monumental three-volume biography of John Maynard Keynes with Fighting for Britain: 1937-1946. "We threw good housekeeping to the winds. But we saved ourselves and helped save the world". So Keynes is supposed to have described how the battling British won the economic war against the Axis powers. This volume of Lord Skidelsky's biography describes in full how the greatest economic mind of the 20th century volunteered his services during the Second World War. Having been rebuffed by the Treasury for most of the 1930s, Keynes' principal idea--using the Budget as a tool to regulate investment and consumer demand--came of age during the war years. Historians have often seen this sea-change in British economic policy as a case of needs must, but Skidelsky brings out the pivotal role Keynes himself played in winning over the politicians (especially the Labour Party) and the men in grey suits in Whitehall (some of whom turned out to be old chums from Cambridge days--which helped). But Skidelsky also provides accessible chapter and verse on Keynes' negotiations with the Americans over Lend-Lease in 1941-2, and over the contraction of the so-called "sterling area" of the British imperial economy at the end of the war. Keynes liked to think that ideas converted politicians, but the evidence here suggests blood, sweat and tears, all of which no doubt played a part in Keynes' premature demise. We also get vivid accounts of Keynes the don and the man of letters: sorting out college finances, advising on theatre, opera and ballet, dabbling in the history of political economy. A fittingly comprehensive account of the final years of a multi-talented man. --Miles Taylor [via]

The first two volumes of Robert Skidelsky's definitive and consummate biography of John Maynard Keynes were hailed as publishing events on both sides of the Atlantic. Already published to acclaim in Britain, this third and final volume covers Keynes's later years from 1937 to his death in 1946. During this period, Keynes's outstanding contribution to the financing of Britain's war effort, to the building of the postwar economic order, and his role in Britain's struggle to preserve its independence within the Atlantic alliance solidified the economist's lasting importance in twentieth-century history. Skidelsky lucidly explains Keynes's economic theories and masterfully evokes the complexities of his personality. The book abounds in lively anecdotes and memorable portraits, notably that of his devoted wife, Lydia Lopokova, whose eccentric but utterly logical post-Keynesian existence is charted in a delightful epilogue. Insightful and intelligent, this is a work that tells the story of a passionate and determined visionary and provides an invaluable overview of issues that remain at the center of international political and economic debate. Many instructors of microeconomic theory have been waiting for a text that provides balanced and in-depth analysis of the essentials of microeconomics. Masterfully combining the results of years of teaching microeconomics at Harvard University, Andreu Mas-Colell, Michael Whinston, and Jerry Green have filled that conspicuous vacancy with their groundbreaking text, Microeconomic Theory.
The authors set out to create a solid organizational foundation upon which to build the effective teaching tool for microeconomic theory. The result presents unprecedented depth of coverage in all the essential topics, while allowing professors to "tailor-make" their course to suit personal priorities and style. Topics such as noncooperative game theory, information economics, mechanism design, and general equilibrium under uncertainty receive the attention that reflects their stature within the discipline. The authors devote an entire section to game theory alone, making it "free-standing" to allow instructors to return to it throughout the course when convenient. Discussion is clear, accessible, and engaging, enabling the student to gradually acquire confidence as well as proficiency. Extensive exercises within each chapter help students to hone their skills, while the text's appendix of terms, fully cross-referenced throughout the previous five sections, offers an accessible guide to the subject matter's terminology. Teachers of microeconomics need no longer rely upon scattered lecture notes to supplement their textbooks. Deftly written by three of the field's most influential scholars, Microeconomic Theory brings the readability, comprehensiveness, and versatility to the first-year graduate classroom that has long been missing. Slow growth and declining productivity energy shortages and over-regulation, chronic inflation and persistent poverty the problems are all too visible and so is our inability to solve them. as the rest of the world begins to overtake us in real economic growth and productivity, our society seems paralyzed, unable to act or even to agree on what action is necessary. Why? It is disturbing but fully documented thesis of this important book by one of the nation's leading economists that the reason we are finding it so difficult to get the economy off dead center is that none of the problems that bedevil us, whether it be energy or inflation or technological innovation can be solved without making many Americans worse off, even though society was a whole might gain. The Problem is that in our democratic system these minorities have the power to veto solutions they don't like and in recent years that is precisely what they have done. The results has been paralysis and drift. Today, as never before, all policy solutions involve some degree of redistribution of income and wealth. And until we face up to this painful reality and learn as a society to agree on who should bear what costs, economic growth will continue to elude us. Like it or not, we can no longer avoid these hard decisions. [via]
