Catechism of the Catholic Church is the first new edition of the catechism in 400 years. Catechism means "instruction," and this text will remain the standard reference for Catholics for many future generations. It is the authoritative summary of Catholic belief regarding the Church creeds, sacraments, commandments, and prayers. To get some idea of the level of detail with which the Catechism engages Catholic doctrine, consider that 17 pages of explanation accompany the opening words of the Apostle's Creed ("I Believe in God the Father"). The book is exceptionally well organized, with line-by-line explanations of every conceivable aspect of orthodox Catholic belief. Extensive cross-referencing, indexing, footnotes, and "In Brief" summaries of each section further ease the project of finding the precise answers to any questions a reader might have. Even the layout of information on the page is easy on the eyes, with wide margins for readers who wish to make notes. Furthermore, the back cover features a true rarity in the annals of world literature: a blurb by the Pope. --Michael Joseph Gross [via]

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - The treatise "Of the Imitation of Christ" appears to have been originally written in Latin early in the fifteenth century. Its exact date and its authorship are still a matter of debate. Manuscripts of the Latin version survive in considerable numbers all over Western Europe, and they, with the vast list of translations and of printed editions, testify to its almost unparalleled popularity. One scribe attributes it to St. Bernard of Clairvaux; but the fact that it contains a quotation from St. Francis of Assisi, who was born thirty years after the death of St. Bernard, disposes of this theory. In England there exist many manuscripts of the first three books, called "Musica Ecclesiastica," frequently ascribed to the English mystic Walter Hilton. But Hilton seems to have died in 1395, and there is no evidence of the existence of the work before 1400. Many manuscripts scattered throughout Europe ascribe the book to Jean le Charlier de Gerson, the great Chancellor of the University of Paris, who was a leading figure in the Church in the earlier part of the fifteenth century. The most probable author, however, especially when the internal evidence is considered, is Thomas Haemmerlein, known also as Thomas a Kempis, from his native town of Kempen, near the Rhine, about forty miles north of Cologne. Working from the 1441 Latin Autograph Manuscript, Creasy succeeds in creating a dramatically different interpretation of the Imitation by working through its historical, cultural and linguistic contexts. For Creasy, Thomas a Kempis offers profound insights into a person's relationship with God, insights that only deepen when they accommodate a post-Vatican II understanding of what he has to say. Only the Bible has been more influential as a source of Christian devotional reading than The Imitation of Christ. This meditation on the spiritual life has inspired readers from Thomas More and St. Ignatius Loyola to Thomas Merton and Pope John Paul II. Written by the Augustinian monk Thomas à Kempis between 1420 and 1427, it contains clear instructions for renouncing wordly vanities and locating eternal truths. No book has more explicitly and movingly described the Christian ideal: "My son, to the degree that you can leave yourself behind, to that degree will you be able to enter into Me." With a new Foreword by Carl Anderson, the Supreme Knight and chief executive officer of the Knights of Columbus. [via]

Written over five centuries ago by Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ has been translated into more languages than any other book except the Bible. It has been acclaimed by countless readers as one of the greatest spiritual masterpieces ever written. No book except the Bible points the way so clearly to inward peace and increased faith in God: "Many words do not satisfy the soul, but a good life comforts the mind, and a pure conscience inspires confidence in God." John Wesley considered it to be of such value to spiritual growth, and the best summary of the Christian life, that he personally translated it for the use of his followers. [via]

A beautifully produced gift edition of Thomas a Kempis's The Imitation of Christ, newly translated by William Griffin (a noted expert on C.S. Lewis) renders this timeless classic in a contemporary idiom. Imitation consists of four sections that deliver exactly what they promise: "The Spiritual Life: What It Is & How It Works," "The Interior Life: Where It Is & How to Find It," "Internal Consolation: How Jesus Describes It & How the Soul Experiences It," and "The Sacrament of the Altar: How to Prepare for It & What It Tastes Like." Richard Foster, in his introduction to this edition, observes that Griffin's translation abandons the smoothly spiritualized serenity of earlier English versions. Instead, Griffin renders Imitation in "the gusts and grunts and hiccups and heehaws of the common fun of the earth" (a phrase borrowed from the poet Dylan Thomas). Foster is right; there is lots of funny stuff here and lots of raw emotion: "All-nighters of roister-doistery lead only to mornings of hugger-muggery, that's to say, of sickness and sadness." Maybe you've never considered the intimate connection between roister- doistery and hugger-muggery before. You will now, and you'll be better for it. [via]

The Thomas à Kempis fan club includes St. Ignatius, Thomas Merton, Thomas More, and even Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. (She reads a chapter of The Imitation of Christ every night before sleep.) Imitation has exerted immense influence on Christian worship, ethics, and church structure, because it gives specific yet broad-minded guidance about the central task of Christian life--learning to live like Jesus. Better to read this book a little here and there, now and then, than to try gobbling it cover to cover. Imitation is no triumph of orderly thinking, but it's a great monument and incentive to deep living. --Michael Joseph Gross [via]

As the day begins, it is fitting to open our eyes and hearts to our Creator. Morning devotions anchor the soul so that it is less likely to stumble on the day's journey. Spurgeon said that to rush from bed to business without first talking with God is as foolish as forgetting to bathe or dress or as unwise as dashing into battle without arms or armor. A day of grace begins with time spent alone with God. [via]

Oswald Chambers, a Scotsman who converted to Christianity in his teens under the ministry of Charles Spurgeon, has been affecting Christians with his devotional words since My Utmost for His Highest was first published in 1935. This acknowledged classic contains 365 daily readings that take heady doctrine and make it practical, realistic, and intensely personal. With humor and humility, Chambers speaks plainly to the common man struggling with devotion to Christ in daily living. Worldly cares and self-serving desires begin to lose their appeal as Chambers aides the reader in transforming his mind by viewing life through the instruction of God's Word. Richard Halverson, former chaplain of the United States Senate, attests to this: "no book except the Bible has influenced my walk with Christ at such deep maturing levels." This is Chambers's chief desire, directing the reader to "shut out every other consideration and keep yourself before God for this one thing only--My Utmost for His Highest... determined to be absolutely and entirely for Him and for Him alone." --Jill Heatherly [via]

The strength of Puritan character and life lay in prayer and meditation. In this practice the spirit of prayer was regarded as of first importance and the best form of prayer, for living prayer is the characteristic of genuine spirituality. Yet prayer is also vocal and may therefore on occasions be written. Consequently in the Puritan tradition there are many written prayers and meditations which constitute an important corpus of inspiring devotional literature. Too often ex tempore prayer lacks variety, order and definiteness. The reason for this lies partly in a neglect of due preparation. It is here that the care and scriptural thoroughness which others found necessary in their approach to God may be of help. This book has been prepared not to 'supply' prayers but to prompt and encourage the Christian as he treads the path on which others have gone before. [via]

"Remember how you felt when you first left home for college? The thrill (and fear) of being on your own? Remember the parties, the late night study sessions, the early morning classes, not knowing how to cook, the home games and all the choices you faced every second of the day? It's a critical transition. A time when faith may be tested. Help the young adults you know and love find a closer relationship with God during the adjustments and opportunities of college life. Compiled by two campus ministers, What About God? is devotional prayer book divided into weekly themes focusing on relevant and contemporary issues, including independent living, sexuality and embracing doubt. Each week includes an opening prayer, scripture readings, reflection, excerpts from spiritual writings, journaling ideas, and closing prayer. ""Amid all of the challenges and changes that graduation from high school brings, this book is meant as a guide to a spiritual discipline of prayer and reflection that can be a touchstone, a lifeline, a way to grow in a relationship with God,"" write the authors. ""...Sometimes the journey will be full of high adventure, insight, and energy. Other times it may be dull and boring - a matter of going through the motions. You'll be amazed at the power and wonders God can work in our lives if we stay open to God, week by week, one day at a time.""" [via]
