While this book is very much in the style of Martha Stewart, the parties that it depicts were planned and executed by other folks. There's a Louisiana lunch at a stately home outside Baton Rouge, complete with maquechoux oysters and pecan-crusted catfish; a garden harvest party, with mountains of vegetarian delights served in an East Hampton garden; a Vietnamese-Thai feast in a garden by the Sacramento River, with the signature flavors of Southeast Asian cooking--lime, ginger, lemongrass, chile paste--gracing spring rolls, chicken, and fish; a soul-food brunch given by an interior designer in Harlem that includes collard greens, gumbo, and sweet potato tarts. Details such as how to make lovely, lotus-like napkin folds are illustrated in "Good Things" sidebars. From the down-home barbecue in a horse arena in Marfa, Texas, to the Polynesian fantasy picnic on the beach in Maui, the key to a great party, says Martha, is caring--"about people, originality, the most attractive settings, and lovely, finely honed, time-honored traditions." And let's not forget food. [via]

Founded in 1981, the international group of architects, Memphis, shook the design world to its foundations. Based in Italy and led by Ettore Sottsass, it overturned and re-shaped the pre-suppositions on which the production of so-called Modern Design is based. It became the almost mythical symbol of the New Design. Laughing out loud at our culture and at itself, Memphis pulled out all stops when it came to colour, pattern, decoration and ornamentation. Written by a founder-member of the group, author of "Ettore Sottsass: A Critical Biography", this document is about the group and its designs. It sets out to contribute to the continuing dialogue on pop culture, the avant-garde and design. [via]

This is the first major monograph to be published on the paintings of Patrick Caulfield, whose work has enjoyed widespread popular appeal and critical acclaim over the past four decades. When Caulfield established his reputation in the early 1960s, his deadpan handling and his reliance on vivid, flat colours encased in uniform black outlines led to him being hailed as one of the originators of Pop Art in England. Caulfield himself consistently denied an interest in popular culture, preferring instead to make timeless pictures that subtly and with great originality reconfigured such traditional subjects as interiors and still-lives. Marked by a graphic elegance, a finely tuned colour sense and a sometimes melancholy air, these are among the most haunting paintings of the late twentieth century. Illustrating over 150 works, this book reproduces almost all the paintings made by Caulfield since 1961, when he was still studying at the Royal College of Art alongside such painters as David Hockney and R.B. Kitaj. In so doing, it comprehensively charts the evolution of one of the most thoughtful and engaging painters of our time. It weaves together analytical and interpretative texts published over the past quarter century by Marco Livingstone, the foremost authority on Caulfield?s work, with new material on different phases of the artist?s career. Individual key paintings are awarded separate, in-depth attention. The artist?s own voice is heard in an interview with Livingstone in which he reflects on his influences and concerns with the same articulate intelligence that he brings to bear on the making of his pictures. The significant events in his life and career are charted in a comprehensive chronology compiled by Richard Riley. Patrick Caulfield: Paintings is a long overdue assessment of the work of one of Britain?s most important painters, whose work has continued to prove extremely influential on subsequent generations. It will be welcomed by art specialists and enthusiasts alike. [via]

Starting in 1910 and ending in the 1990s, it's a decade-by-decade exploration of chic design style. Remember your parents' corner sofas and the patterned carpet? The oh-so-daring conversation pits and shag pile carpets? You will see all those and more in this unique sourcebook of retro design.

Choose from the arty bohemia of the 1910s, the chic 20s of the flappers, the elegant Art Deco styles of the 30s and 40s, or the modernism of the 50s. Those who prefer a more modern look can choose between the dazzling Pop Art of the 60s, the penthouse cosmopolitan 70s, the Post-modern eclectic 80s, or 90s loft living. Whatever your style, there is a scheme for you among this revealing collection of stunning retro homes. [via]

Poised against the sky like fantastic giant birds, the bridges and buildings of Santiago Calatrava possess a breathtaking grace and rhythm. Some--including the Milwaukee Art Museum and the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, Spain--are designed to expand and contract like living organisms. In Santiago Calatrava: The Complete Works, Alexander Tzonis portrays the Spanish architect as a unique blend of artist and engineer. Using analogy as a creative tool, Calatrava has filled notebooks with bold sketches of lunging and leaping human bodies that mutate into arcing roof forms and bridge suspensions. At the same time--as the author of a doctoral thesis about how to design frame structures that can open and close--he has invented new systems that combine efficiency and stability with the elegance of a brilliant mathematical solution. Tzonis, an architecture professor whose writing is a model of clarity, leads the general reader through the intricacies of Calatrava's solutions for folding frames and new kinds of curved surfaces. Vastly superior in its depth of analysis to Philip Jodidio's Santiago Calatrava, Tzonis's authoritative text is accompanied by hundreds of glorious large-scale images of the work by numerous photographers. The book opens with a photo anthology of Calatrava's greatest works and then follows the development of his vision from 1979 to his 2004 design for the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. At the beginning of his career, Calatrava designed a roof that looks like a flying machine from the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci. Tzonis writes that the concept was "a personal manifesto of what architecture could be: innovative, optimistic, rational, and playful." Conceived a mere eight years later, the Alamillo Bridge in Seville became an instant landmark. A towering, dramatically back-angled pylon supports 13 pairs of cables as deftly as if they were strings on a harp, pushing notions of tension and stability to a thrilling new extreme. --Cathy Curtis [via]
