› Find signed collectible books: '3D Game Engine Design: A Practical Approach to Real-Time Computer Graphics'
Aimed at the working C++ game developer, 3D Game Engine Design provides a tour of mathematical techniques for 3-D graphics and the source code used to implement them in state-of-the-art video game engines. If you work in the game industry (or would like to), this book will serve you well because it delivers excellent best practices for algorithms and programming techniques that will help your software keep up with the competition.
This text is a virtual encyclopaedia of expertise, based on the author's own work and research in the gaming industry. It provides the mathematical notation, algorithms, and C++ code (on the accompanying CD-ROM) needed to build fast and maintainable game engines. Early sections start with the basics, with the math used to work with common 3-D objects (like spheres and boxes). Highlights include a high-powered review of quaternion algebra, the preferred way to transform 3-D data in many cases.
The chapters on graphics pipelines explain the math behind representing and rendering a 3-D world in 2-D with intervening effects like lighting, texture mapping and the like. A variety of current algorithms are provided for representing 3-D scenes, efficient picking (which allows a programmer to determine which object in a 3-D world has been selected) and collision detection (where objects collide virtually). In the game software of today, curves--rather than individual triangles or polygons--are often used to represent 3-D objects. Algorithms that are used to turn curves into rendered surfaces are also provided.
Later sections look at current thinking about animation techniques for characters (including key frames, inverse kinematics and skinning--in which digital skin is fitted over digital bone to create more realistic-looking movement). How to represent terrain inside virtual worlds is also explained. The book closes with excellent material on cutting-edge special effects like lens flare and projected shadows, which can add an extra level of realism to a video game. An appendix examines guidelines for designing object-oriented game software in C++.
Filled with mathematical insight and expert code that puts each principle or algorithm to work, 3-D Game Engine Design provides an expert view of what goes into building a state-of-the-art game engine. --Richard Dragan [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'Andrew Glassner's Notebook : Recreational Computer Graphics'
Andrew Glassner's Notebook is a compilation of lively and brain-tickling columns from the bimonthly magazine IEEE Computer Graphics & Applications, some of which are published here in their entirety for the first time. Going beyond mere "fun with computer graphics," topics include problems in mathematics, physics, astronomy, and even industrial design.
The articles are organized chronologically, and some of the best subjects get revisited at a later date. For example, in "Origami Polyhedra," Glassner shows how to build everything from tetrahedra to icosadodecahedra using unit origami and colored paper, and explains it clearly enough that a child could follow. In a later column, he revisits the theme, this time showing how to build polyhedra from net diagrams. One early column discusses frieze groups and their relation to basic group theory, while a later chapter delves into the tangential topic of aperiodic tiling. Still another column deals with the challenge of creating alphanumeric displays on LCD, LED, and other light-emitting panels (the theory behind the ability to spell words upside down on a calculator, e.g., 07734).
The book is attractively designed with an abundance of illustrations that are colorfully visual and as elegant as they are entrancing. Patterns of all kinds in science are intriguing, and this is proven many times over. There is substantial serious mathematics here also: the expert will find the articles enhanced by it, but nonexperts can bypass it without missing any of the fun.
This notebook will appeal to mathematicians, graphic artists, and any open-minded, curious thinker, even the scientifically inclined junior high schooler. It is the sort of book that could fill scientists with new enthusiasm or inspire nonscientists to reconsider why they didn't like science in the first place. --Angelynn Grant
Topics covered: Solar halos and sun dogs, frieze groups and aperiodic tiling, origami and net diagrams for polyhedra, box folding, taxicab geometry, shading algorithms, alphanumeric electronic displays, polygon approximations and the Schwartz paradox, moiré patterns, mirror reflections and billiard balls, Ptolemy's Theorem, Napoleon's Theorem, and Fourier transformations. An excellent successor to Hennessy and Patterson's Computer Organization and Design, this book presents computer architecture and design as something quantitative that can be studied in the context of real running systems rather than in an abstract format. The concepts are again grounded in real machine architectures and many of the examples are contemporary architectures, such as PowerPC chips and Intel 80x86. Computer Architecture follows the same outline as its predecessor, but covers information in more depth, moving rapidly from introductory discussions to issues just shy of computer design research. The format again includes an excellent mix of exercises and historical background. This book is recommended for people with some experience in digital design--or people who have read and understood the authors' first text. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'Computer Organization and Design: The Hardware/Software Interface'
This textbook provides a basic introduction to the fundamentals of current computer designs. As the title suggests, the text skirts the border between hardware and software. After an overview of the subject and a discussion of performance, the book launches into technical matter such as instruction sets, how they are constrained by the underlying processor hardware, the constraints on their design, and more. An excellent critique of computer arithmetic methods leads to a high-level discussion on processor design. Following is a great introduction to pipelining, nice coverage of memory issues, and solid attention to peripherals. The book concludes with a brief discussion of the additional issues inherent in multiprocessing machines. The extremely lucid description is grounded in real-world examples. Interesting exercises help reinforce the material, and each section contains a write-up of the historical background of each idea. Computer Organization and Design is accessible to the beginner, but also offers plenty of valuable knowledge for experienced engineers. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'Contextual Design: Defining Customer-Centered Systems'
There's certainly no shortage of software design methods: most demand total allegiance, and many claim to be the only true way to delivering useful and maintainable software systems in a timely manner. Contextual Design describes another worthwhile software engineering method, one that places the user (or customer) at the forefront of the software design process from beginning to end. This method seems to be a particularly worthwhile addition to the literature.
Contextual Design begins with contextual inquiry, where software developers interview users and attempt to understand the way they work. Such "customer empathy" is central to the Contextual Design process and a total understanding of "work" within organizations is the mantra here. The book describes how, later in the process, software developers step back from the user data and do an "affinity," which is an overall analysis of hundreds (or even thousands) of individual facts. Contextual Design then explains the additional steps required to build systems using this method, including building models for flow, sequence, and artifacts, and establishing the cultural and the physical environments for a system. After getting an overview, developers consolidate these initial models, get more user input, and then design user interfaces.
This book, written in a clear, informal style without excessive jargon, reads very much like a book on business motivation. Various practitioners of Contextual Design offer short testimonials on the software design method. [via]

This new edition of Database Modeling & Design continues to focus on the techniques for relational database design introduced in previous editions, starting with the entity-relationship (ER) approach for data requirements specification and conceptual modeling. Author Toby Teorey then looks ahead to the common properties in data modeling and operations shared among the relational model and advanced database technologies such as the object-oriented, temporal, and multimedia models. A full chapter is devoted to database design techniques for data warehousing and online analytical processing (OLAP).
Teorey covers the database life cycle from requirements analysis and logical design to physical design for local, distributed, and multidatabases. The discussion of basic principles is supplemented with a common, running example: a company personnel and project database based on real-life experiences and classroom testing.
Written for both the novice and the professional database designer, this book is the essential resource for database modeling, including the building of standard SQL data definitions. The design rules set forth in this book are applicable to any SQL-based system, including IBM DB2, Oracle V8.0, Informix IDS-UDO, Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server, and Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise.
* Continued focus on relational model
* Integration of information about data warehouse and OLAP, plus other advanced database technologies, including object oriented, multimedia, and temporal database
* Discussion of basic principles is supplemented by examples based on real life cases

A skeptic by nature, a writer and teacher more at home with ballpoint pens than computer programs, Dinty W. Moore wanted to find out for himself if the much-touted Internet and the electronic culture it has spawned is really going to be the Next Big Thing, or whether it's the emperor's new clothes. This is not a how-to guide, a giddy net-head's online magical mystery tour, or a binaries-in-the-sky futurist treatise. Instead, this book tells it like it is about the Internet. Anyone who's asked, Who's there? What am I missing? and What is it all about? will find Moore's good-natured skepticism a welcome break from the explosion of wide-eyed techno-hype raging all around us. "Moore is far and away the best pure writer of the 'Wired School.' He's like the Stage Manager poking his head in around the set of 'Our Town.' Funny that it took the arrival of this commonsensical outsider to finally put a real human face on the digital world."--San Jose Mercury-News.

In January 1999, Sarah Flannery, a sports-loving teenager from Blarney in County Cork, Ireland, was awarded Ireland's Young Scientist of the Year for her extraordinary research and discoveries in Internet cryptography. The following day, her story began appearing in Irish papers and soon after was splashed across the front page of the London Times, complete with a photo of Sarah and a caption calling her "brilliant." Just sixteen, she was a mathematician with an international reputation.
IN CODE is a heartwarming story that will have readers cheering Sarah on. Originally published in England and cowritten with her mathematician father, David Flannery, IN CODE is "a wonderfully moving story about the thrill of the mathematical chase" (Nature) and "a paean to intellectual adventure" (Times Educational Supplement). A memoir in mathematics, it is all about how a girl next door, nurtured by her family, moved from the simple math puzzles that were the staple of dinnertime conversation to prime numbers, the Sieve of Eratosthenes, Fermat's Little Theorem, googols-and finally into her breathtaking algorithm. Parallel with each step is a modest girl's own self-discovery-her values, her burning curiosity, the joy of persistence, and, above all, her love for her family. [via]

Modestly subtitled "The Definitive BGP resource", Internet Routing Architectures is published by the book division of that cornerstone of the Internet, Cisco Systems--so you can be sure that the contents therein have come pretty much straight from the horse's mouth. For those unaware, "BGP" is short for Border Gateway Protocol, the de facto inter-domain routing protocol used in the Internet today.
The book is broken down into four sections, an overview of the Internet, routing protocol basics, effective routing design and routing device configuration. It's not a revision aid per se, one that would help you prepare for a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) qualification, and so is laid out as a general reference work. But the book's layout and format does have more than a passing resemblance to a Cisco router manual!
Now it would be an understatement to say that the ground covered by this book is incredibly technical and isn't for the casual reader. It is also true to say that where the subject matter is so complex, it's won't be long before your eyes glaze over. But if you try to over-simplify something that is inherently complicated it loses its meaning. This book succeeds in treading this fine line by introducing technical detail gradually and making use of practical examples whenever possible. And the going only really gets tough in the final chapters. Making this sort of rocket science accessible takes some skill and, more often than not, this book succeeds at that task, though it remains a dry read. Its intended audience is fairly small but for those that do need access to this information, this book is one for the shortlist. --Roger Gann [via]

Jim Blinn presents an eclectic collection of 20 articles he originally wrote for Computer Graphics and Applications, an IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) magazine aimed at graphics professionals. It's unapologetic about being a programmer's book, and it won't make much sense if you're not one (even less if you've forgotten your algebra). But if the shoe fits, and if you're going to be writing your own graphics routines, you stand to learn a lot from an acknowledged master.
Topics include a tour through the author's collection of circle-drawing algorithms, an introduction to animation concepts through a character called Blobby Man, musings on rendering platonic solids, detailed discussions of shadows, clipping and viewports, and investigations into the nature of pixel space. Many algorithms are presented in a generalized pseudo-code that could be easily translated into other languages. In addition to learning practical techniques, you'll also benefit from seeing Blinn's intelligent and offbeat approach to solving problems. [via]

With references to dozens of programming languages, from Ada to Turing and everything in between (including C, C++, Java, and Perl), this book is a truly in-depth guide to how code is compiled (or interpreted) and executed on computer hardware. Early chapters tend to be slightly more theoretical (with coverage of regular expressions and context-free grammars) and will be most valuable to the computer science student, but much of this book is accessible to anyone seeking to widen their knowledge (especially since recent standards surrounding XML make use of some of the same vocabulary presented here).
The book has a comprehensive discussion of compilation and linking, as well as how data types are implemented in memory. Sections on functional and logical programming (illustrated with Scheme and Prolog, which are often used in AI research) can expand your understanding of how programming languages work. Final sections on the advantages--and complexities--of concurrent processing, plus a nice treatment of code optimization techniques, round out the text here. Each chapter provides numerous exercises, so you can try out the ideas on your own.
Students will benefit from the practical examples here, drawn from a wide range of languages. If you are a self-taught developer, the very approachable tutorial can give you perspective on the formal definitions of many computer languages, which can help you master new ones more effectively. --Richard Dragan
