Striking an ideally balanced approach, this text introduces students to microprocessor fundamentals by using a pedagogical SAP (Simple-As-Possible) model computer. The text then relates these fundamentals to three real-world examples: Intels 8085, Motorolas 6800, and the 6502 chip used by Apple Computers. Instructors can focus on just one of these popular microprocessors, or include the features of others. This edition correlates closely with popular chip trainers and includes added coverage of the Intel 8088 16-bit microprocessors. It also includes a student version of the TASM cross-assembler software program.
Experiments for Digital Computer Electronics, prepared expressly for this Third Edition, contains hardware and software experiments that allow students to expand upon the topics covered in the text through hands-on exercises. An Instructors Guide containing answers to chapter questions and experiment results is also offered. [via]

This text introduces the tools for the analysis and design of discrete-time systems. Starting with a review of fundamental theory, it includes methods for the design of linear time-invariant discrete-time systems to meet prescribed design specifications. It also provides coverage of the analysis and effects of quantization of signal and system parameters due to finite word-length base implementation of systems. MATLAB exercises are used throughout the text to illustrate important concepts, difficult analytical results and typical practical problems. The final chapter of the text focuses on important practical applications of digital signal processing. [via]

This is the first complete guide to the revolutionary new Fibre Channel standard. Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the features of Fibre Channel - a revolutionary new industry standard interface that unites networked communications and computer Input/Output technologies. Fibre Channel's extremely flexible architecture combines the highspeed dedicated bandwidth of I/O channels like SCSI with the networking flexibility of local area network interfaces like ATM and Ethernet - all while operating over a variety of optical and electronic media and connection topologies at speeds exceeding 100 MBytes. This one-stop reference presents a complete overview of the Fibre Channel architecture - the first generally available besides the ANSI documentation. You'll find step-by-step guidance on the FC standard ranging from the physical level signal transmission up to the interface to upper level protocols such as IP and SCSI. Included is information on the structure, concepts, operations, and capabilities of Fibre Channel, as well as highly detailed descriptions that you can use as a general guide in building and troubleshooting FC systems. Whether you're a communications manager, engineer, developer, or technician, this hands-on sourcebook will enable you to understand and work effective with Fibre Channel systems in a networked computing environment. A lot of computer-security textbooks approach the subject from a defensive point of view. "Do this, and probably you'll survive a particular kind of attack," they say. In refreshing contrast, Hacking Exposed, Second Edition talks about security from an offensive angle. A Jane's-like catalog of the weaponry that black-hat hackers use is laid out in full. Readers see what programs are out there, get a rundown on what the programs can do, and benefit from detailed explanations of concepts (such as wardialing and rootkits) that most system administrators kind of understand, but perhaps not in detail. The book also walks through how to use the more powerful and popular hacker software, including L0phtCrack. This new edition has been updated extensively, largely with the results of "honeypot" exercises (in which attacks on sacrificial machines are monitored) and Windows 2000 public security trials. There's a lot of new stuff on e-mail worms, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and attacks that involve routing protocols.
The result of all of this familiarity with bad-guy tools is a leg up on defending against them. Hacking Exposed wastes no time in explaining how to implement the countermeasures--where they exist--that will render known attacks ineffective. Taking on the major network operating systems and network devices one at a time, the authors tell you exactly what Unix configuration files to alter, what Windows NT Registry keys to change, and what settings to make in NetWare. They spare no criticism of products with which they aren't impressed, and don't hesitate to point out inherent, uncorrectable security weaknesses where they find them. This book is no mere rehashing of generally accepted security practices. It and its companion Web site are the best way for all of you network administrators to know thine enemies. --David Wall

Steven Johnson turns the tables on the way we consider our computer interfaces. While many discussions focus on how interfaces help us work by adapting to our ways of thinking and our real-world metaphors, Johnson jumps from there to look at how our thinking and world view are altered by our computer interfaces.
He begins with the simple: The mouse improved the spatial nature of our computers by letting us move, by the proxy of our pointers, within the screen. The windows metaphor made cyberspace a 3-D space. And while we tend to think about the graphical nature of interfaces, Johnson also explores the textual side and how it has changed the way we work with the written word.
Interface Culture then goes on to show how, with each advance in technology, the interface shapes our perceptions in new ways. Where mice and windows turned the computing world into cyberspace, agents have created a perception of software as personality. On the larger scale, Johnson sees these tools, originally built on noncyber metaphors, as creating, in their turn, a new set of metaphors for looking at the rest of the world. And while he finds it exciting, he spends considerable time on such shortcomings in our approach to interfacing: what he considers the excessive emphasis on graphics elements at the cost of anything textual. Johnson, who is the editor of the cerebral Feed Web site and whom Newsweek called one of the most influential people in cyberspace, has written an intelligent book about interface design, its relationship to the real world, and how it affects our perception of worlds both cyber and physical. In the Nevada desert, an experiment has gone horribly wrong. A cloud of nanoparticles -- micro-robots -- has escaped from the laboratory. This cloud is self-sustaining and self-reproducing. It is intelligent and learns from experience. For all practical purposes, it is alive. It has been programmed as a predator. It is evolving swiftly, becoming more deadly with each passing hour. Every attempt to destroy it has failed. And we are the prey. As fresh as today's headlines, Michael Crichton'smost compelling novel yet tells the story of a mechanical plague and the desperate efforts of a handful of scientists to stop it. Drawing on up-to-the-minute scientific fact, Prey takes us into the emerging realms of nanotechnology and artificial distributed intelligence -- in a story of breathtaking suspense. Prey is a novel you can't put down. Because time is running out. [via]
