Vivek Alwayn, an experienced CCIE who helps service providers implement Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) for a living, shares his considerable knowledge of MPLS in Advanced MPLS Design and Implementation. MPLS works great for getting Internet Protocol (IP) traffic to move reliably over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) links, particularly when there's a strict Quality of Service (QoS) requirement or a probable need to scale up.
After a brief introduction to MPLS--it should be more of a refresher, really, for people who already know what the technology is about--Alwayn brings out scores of details that define how MPLS works, and how it can be made to work better. His best technique is to present a scenario, declare some design goals for it, and proceed to explain how to achieve those goals. Reading these case studies is really enjoyable from an engineering perspective (even if yours is not a Cisco shop), and they feature enough step-by-step instructions for the IOS command line to never leave you guessing about how to translate the approach to your own equipment.
In addition to solving model problems, Alwayn takes time to explain why MPLS works the way it does. In many cases, this means calculations. He shows how LCNs are allocated to port groups, how link metrics are evaluated to yield desirable and undesirable results, and how Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVCs) and Label Virtual Circuits (LVCs) are carved out of a port. He's also generous with configuration listings. In a typical exercise, he'll show complete configurations for all routers involved, even if there are eight or nine of them. --David Wall
Topics covered: Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) for people who already have a handle on what it's for and want to use it on their service provider networks and corporate backbones. With lots of command detail and configuration specifics (which are particular to Cisco Systems routers) and engineering discussions (which are not), the author explains how to implement MPLS for Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) over both Internet Protocol (IP) and Asynchronous TransferMode (ATM). Beyond that, there is coverage of traffic engineering, Quality of Service (QoS), and migration. [via]

Winner of the 2003 Independent Publishers Book Award for Best Multicultural Non-fiction. Recognized as the newest and most accurate translation of Sun Tzu's ancient classic with six significant improvements over other translation: 1) It uses the Taipei compilation of the main Chinese textual traditions instead of older fragmentary sources. 2) It individually translates each Chinese ideogram to let readers see the precise formulas in the original text. 3) It offers English sentences that clarify the central meaning of the text but chooses words to demonstrate the range of meaning in the original. 4) It preserves the original weight of ideas by creating one and only one line of English for each line of Chinese. 5) It duplicates the original format of the Chinese by grouping and numbering lines clearly to preserve the original contextual associations. 6) It assumes that Sun Tzu was rigorously consistent in his ideas. The imprecise word usage that creates contradictions in other versions are eliminated. [via]

Sun Tzu's Art of War, compiled more than two thousand years ago, is a study of the anatomy of organizations in conflict. It is perhaps the most prestigious and influential book of strategy in the world today. Now, this unique volume brings together the essential versions of Sun Tzu's text, along with illuminating commentaries and auxiliary texts written by distinguished strategists. The translations, by the renowned translator Thomas Cleary, have all been published previously in book form, except for The Silver Sparrow Art of War, which is available here for the first time. This comprehensive collection contains:
The Art of War: This edition of Sun Tzu's text includes the classic collection of commentaries by eleven interpreters.
Mastering the Art of War: Consisting of essays by two prominent statesmen-generals of Han dynasty China, Zhuge Liang and Liu Ji, this book develops the strategies of Sun Tzu's classic into a complete handbook of organization and leadership. It draws on episodes from Chinese history to show in concrete terms the proper use of Sun Tzu's principles.
The Lost Art of War: Written more than one hundred years after Sun Tzu's text, by Sun Bin, a linear descendant of Sun Tzu, this classic of political and military strategy is faithful to the principles of The Art of War, while developing their practical application much further.
The Silver Sparrow Art of War: A version of Sun Tzu's Art of War based on a manuscript of the classic text discovered at a Chinese archeological site in China's Shandong Province in 1972, which contains previously unknown fragments. [via]

The two political classics in this book are the product of a time of intense turmoil in Chinese history. Dating from the Period of the Warring States (403-221BC), they anticipate Machiavelli's The Prince by nearly 2000 years. The Art of War is the best known of a considerable body of Chinese works on the subject. It analyses the nature of war, and reveals how victory may be ensured. The Book of Lord Shang is a political treatise for the instruction of rulers. These texts are anything but armchair strategy or ivory-tower speculation. They are serious, urgent and practical responses to the desperate situations in which they were written. They have been immensely influential both inside and outside China. [via]

Ivor Horton's Beginning C++ provides a thorough and exceptionally well-written introduction to the world of C++. This guide pays the same attention to detail as Horton's previous book, Beginning Java, and it provides clear and illustrative examples, making it an excellent candidate for your programming bookshelf.
Even working C++ programmers may not be familiar with all the advanced features of the Standard C++. The approach throughout Beginning C++ is to cover what C++ does out of the box. (One good reason to consider C++ instead of Java, for example, is that C++ is very close to becoming an international standard, while Java continues to fragment amid proprietary disputes between vendors such as Sun Microsystems and Microsoft.) Even early chapters introduce Standard Library features along with basic C++ data types, keywords, operators, and flow control statements. The built-in C++ string class gets full coverage, all before the book introduces the concepts of pointers. (It's significant that the new C++ can do a lot more than manipulate data through pointers. The author makes a strong case that these built-in strengths are what will let C++ compete against Java.)
Later chapters explore topics in class design, which lets you design custom effective classes in C++. Thorny issues in class design, such as inheritance, virtual methods, and the proper use of default and copy constructors, as well as the pitfalls and advantages of operator overloading, are all presented in remarkably clear detail.
Classes in the C++ Standard Template Library are given their due. In all, Beginning C++ provides a massive amount of material, but presents it in digestible increments. The authors do a fine job of presenting the basics before going on to more advanced topics. This can be used as a stand-alone text to getting the most out of the C++ language. [via]

Provided you have some previous basic exposure to C and Unix, Beginning Linux Programming delivers an excellent overview of the world of Linux development with an appealing range of essential tools and APIs.
The standout feature of Beginning Linux Programming is its wide-ranging coverage of important topics in basic Unix programming. In a series of short chapters, the authors discuss the basics of writing Unix programs in C, with material on basic system calls, file I/O, interprocess communication (for getting programs to work together), and advanced topics such as socket programming and how to create Unix device drivers.
Parallel to this, the book introduces the toolkits and libraries for working with user interfaces, from simpler terminal mode applications to X and GTK+ for graphical user interfaces. While you won't be an authority on X or GTK+ after reading this book, you will certainly be able to explore real Linux development on your own after the capable introductory guide provided here. (The book's main example, a CD-ROM database, gets enhanced in subsequent chapters using new APIs and features as the book moves forward.) This text also serves as a valuable primer on languages and tools such as Tcl, Perl, and CGI. (There's even a section that explains the basics of the Internet and HTML.)
More than ever, there is no shortage of specific information on Linux programming, but few titles provide such a wide-ranging tour of what you need to know to get serious with Linux development. In all, Beginning Linux Programming gives the reader an intelligent sampling of essential topics in today's Linux. It's a wise choice for aspiring Unix C developers or folks seeking to extend the range of their Linux knowledge. --Richard Dragan
Topics covered: Linux overview, compiling C programs, shell programming, pipes, script keywords and functions, Unix file I/O in C, Unix system functions, terminal interfaces (termios, keyboard input, the curses library), memory management, file locking, dbm databases, make and source control basics, man pages, debugging with gdb, processes and signals, POSIX threads and synchronization, IPC and pipes, semaphores, queues and shared memory, sockets, Tcl basics, X Windows and GTK+ for GNOME, Perl basics, HTML and CGI, writing Unix device drivers. DOS for Dummies, the book that changed the way computer books are written and marketed has come out in a third edition. By and large, it's the same as the previous edition (advances in MS-DOS have not been numerous), but there is some new information here. Further, DOS for Dummies remains an entertaining book and if you use DOS, it's the book you want to assist you.
The basic idea of this book is that you can identify a problem you're having with your computer, ranging from how to turn the thing on to how to back up only the files that have changed since the last backup. You can then turn to the relevant section--the table of contents is very detailed--read a few pages, carry out some procedure, and move on to the next problem. You'll find sections on hardware, file management, text editing, and software installation. Later chapters deal with troubleshooting.
The newest material in this release of DOS for Dummies deals with DOS 6.22 and the DOS-like shell that you can use under Windows 95 and Windows 98. For users of the latest versions of Windows, Gookin demonstrates some relevant procedures. But most of the coverage deals with DOS itself and programs that are designed to run under DOS. There's even stuff about WordStar here (it's a little-known fact of history that the Rosetta stone was written with WordStar).
DOS for Dummies is funny, too, in a wry sort of way. What kind of joke is appropriate to a section about parallel ports, anyway? The author manages to infuse practically every passage with humour. Other computer books should make an effort to take themselves less seriously. The verdict: if you're using DOS--and more of you are than the Windows people would have us believe--this book will provide you with valuable help. --David Wall [via]

The intersection of ethics, law, business and computer software is the subject of these essays and speeches by MacArthur Foundation Grant winner, Richard M. Stallman. This collection includes historical writings such as The GNU Manifesto, which defined and launched the activist Free Software Movement, along with new writings on hot topics in copyright, patent law, and the controversial issue of "trusted computing." Stallman takes a critical look at common abuses of copyright law and patents when applied to computer software programs, and how these abuses damage our entire society and remove our existing freedoms. He also discusses the social aspects of software and how free software can create community and social justice.
Given the current turmoil in copyright and patent laws, including the DMCA and proposed CBDTPA, these essays are more relevant than ever. Stallman tackles head-on the essential issues driving the current changes in copyright law. He argues that for creativity to flourish, software must be free of inappropriate and overly-broad legal constraints. Over the past twenty years his arguments and actions have changed the course of software history; this new book is sure to impact the future of software and legal policies in the years to come.
Lawrence Lessig, the author of two well-known books on similar topics, writes the introduction. He is a noted legal expert on copyright law and a Stanford Law School professor. [via]

Perl has always been a powerful and popular programming language, but with its new object capabilities, it can do even more. Written for anyone with a little Perl experience, Damian Conway's Object Oriented Perl provides an invaluable guide to virtually every aspect of object-oriented programming in Perl.
The most notable thing about Object Oriented Perl is Conway's excellent perspective on object-oriented concepts and how they are implemented in Perl. This book does a remarkable job of cutting through traditional jargon and illustrating how basic object-oriented design techniques are handled in Perl. (A useful appendix attests to the author's wide-ranging knowledge, with a comparison of Smalltalk, Eiffel, C++, and Java with Perl, including a summary of object-oriented syntax for each.) This book also features a truly excellent review of basic Perl syntax.
Throughout this text, the author shows you the basics of solid object design (illustrated using classes that model music CDs). Basic concepts like inheritance and polymorphism get thorough and clear coverage. The book also points out common mistakes and provides many tips for navigating the powerful and flexible (yet sometimes tricky) nuances of using Perl objects. For instance, Conway shows how to achieve true data encapsulation in Perl (which generally allows calls across modules) as well as its natural support for generic programming techniques.
He also pays special attention to popular object modules available from CPAN (like Class::MethodmakerK, which simplifies declaring classes) and discusses performance issues and the tradeoff between programming convenience and speed often faced by today's Perl developer. Advanced chapters cover a number of techniques for adding persistence and invoking methods using multiple dispatching.
Filled with syntactic tips and tricks, Object Oriented Perl is a sure bet for any programmer who wants to learn how to use Perl objects effectively. --Richard Dragan
Topics covered: Perl language review, CPAN, Perl objects, 'blessing' and inheritance, polymorphism, Class::Struct and Class::Methodmaker modules, Perl ties and closures, operator overloading, encapsulation, multiple dispatch, Class::Multimethods, coarse-grained and fine-grained object persistence techniques, performance issues. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Professional .NET Framework aims to explain what Microsoft Corporation's .NET initiative is all about from a technical point of view. The authors explain what it means for an application to run in the .NET environment, providing details on what code executes on which machine, where various resources come from, and how the .NET class library works. The book's goal--at which it's largely successful--is to explain how .NET systems work, without getting too deep into actual code. The code samples that appear here (and there are quite a few) are mainly for clarification. The authors based their work on the Beta 2 edition of .NET, which was pretty close to the final version.
There's a tradeoff inherent in multiauthor books like this one (Wrox Press publishes a lot of them). It is true that practically no one knows everything about a complicated subject like the .NET architecture soon after its release, and team authorship is a good way to achieve something like comprehensive coverage in a timely fashion. The downside of such books, however, is their irregular collection of writing and teaching styles, and the lack of cohesion across chapters. Individual chapters may be excellent (in this book, the chapters on the Common Language Runtime (CLR) and on components and controls are particularly good) but there's no unifying authorial voice. That's why you'll want to treat this book more as an encyclopedia to be consulted for information about particular .NET components, rather than as a tutorial to be read front to back. --David Wall
Topics covered: The Microsoft .NET software framework from an architectural standpoint. In addition to coverage of the .NET design as a whole, focused coverage goes to the Common Language Runtime (CLR) and its way of managing memory, classes, and compilation across multiple machines. There's also information on the .NET class library, the technique of remoting, and Web services under .NET. [via]

Suitable for both the project manager and Visual Basic developer, Jake Sturm's Professional Visual Basic Project Management is a clear-eyed guide to enterprise-level project management using Visual Basic 6 and UML. It provides a digestible and intelligent mix of advice and design expertise that can bring your organization up to speed with today's VB and the Microsoft platform.
The book offers a notable mix of practical advice for the project manager with some nuts-and-bolts technical detail on such topics as components, UML, and Microsoft tools like Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS). Like most books on software development, this text walks the reader through the software lifecycle (organized here into the envisionment, design, development, and deployment phases). Along the way, the author's clear style and tips for successful management help make this tour a successful one.
Standout sections include the book's details on managing meetings and the sample documents (such as budgets and project schedules) created with Project 98. You'll also appreciate the breakdown of the various players in the development effort (from project and component managers to end users and corporate stakeholders) and the changing roles they play during the project lifecycle.
Along the way, the author shows off some of the latest thinking about VB used on the Microsoft platform, with coverage of business objects, transactions, MTS, and even Web interfaces created with ASPs. UML is used throughout the book as part of the design process (including class, activity, and sequence diagrams).
While there's certainly no substitute for real project management experience, with its mix of accessibility and technical detail this book can give any VB project manager some valuable extra help for taking on the challenges of today's enterprise development. --Richard Dragan

What does the world want? According to John Battelle, a company that answers that question -- in all its shades of meaning -- can unlock the most intractable riddles of both business and culture. And for the past few years, that's exactly what Google has been doing.
Jumping into the game long after Yahoo, Alta Vista, Excite, Lycos, and other pioneers, Google offered a radical new approach to search, redefined the idea of viral marketing, survived the dotcom crash, and pulled off the largest and most talked about initial public offering in the history of Silicon Valley.
But The Search offers much more than the inside story of Google's triumph. It's also a big-picture book about the past, present, and future of search technology, and the enormous impact it is starting to have on marketing, media, pop culture, dating, job hunting, international law, civil liberties, and just about every other sphere of human interest.
More than any of its rivals, Google has become the gateway to instant knowledge. Hundreds of millions of people use it to satisfy their wants, needs, fears, and obsessions, creating an enormous artifact that Battelle calls "the Database of Intentions." Somewhere in Google's archives, for instance, you can find the agonized research of a gay man with AIDS, the silent plotting of a would-be bombmaker, and the anxiety of a woman checking out her blind date. Combined with the databases of thousands of other search-driven businesses, large and small, it all adds up to a goldmine of information that powerful organizations (including the government) will want to get their hands on.
No one is better qualified to explain this entire phenomenon than Battelle, who cofounded Wired and founded The Industry Standard. Perhaps more than any other journalist, he has devoted his career to finding the holy grail of technology -- something as transformational as the Macintosh was in the mid- 1980s. And he has finally found it in search.
Battelle draws on more than 350 interviews with major players from Silicon Valley to Seattle to Wall Street, including Google cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin and CEO Eric Schmidt, as well as competitors like Louis Monier, who invented AltaVista, and Neil Moncrief, a soft-spoken Georgian whose business Google built, destroyed, and built again.
Battelle lucidly reveals how search technology actually works, explores the amazing power of targeted advertising, and reports on the frenzy of the Google IPO, when the company tried to rewrite the rules of Wall Street and declared "don't be evil" as its corporate motto.
For anyone who wants to understand how Google really succeeded -- and the implications of a world in which every click can be preserved forever -- THE SEARCH is an eye-opening and indispensable read. [via]

Computer software testing is absolutely essential to the success of any software company and, consequently, has become one of the most rapidly growing areas of employment in the industry. This is a must-have for students wanting entry-level positions as testers, experienced programmers who need to find errors fast or communicate with armies of testers, and project and test managers who need to choreograph the many people, deadlines, and expectations. It might even be a good book for people who have recently bought buggy operating systems that don't live up to the hype. Very Highly Recommended. [via]
