Story Behind the Book
Bruce Wilkinson had received thousands of requests for a book about how people learn. Having taught teachers all over the world, he developed the Seven Laws as the basis of his teaching workshops. In 1991 he sat down to put this content into book form. Published originally as a partnership between Multnomah Publishers and Walk Thru the Bible Ministries, this book is a companion to the workbook titled Almost Every Answer for Practically Every Teacher. As we survey the educational ruins around us, classical and Christian education appears to be an idea whose time has come again. More and more Christian parents are seeing the failures of modern education, and they are hungering for a substantive alternative, one that has been tested before and found to be good.
Classical and Christian education presents them with just such an alternative. [via]

A strong and vibrant Christian education program lies at the heart of a growing church. No matter what the philosophy or approach to education, no program can flourish without skilled and dedicated teachers. While some such teachers are born, Israel Galindo believes that many others can be made.
The author bases his advice on sound educational theory and on years of experience in Christian education. He is not content to develop merely good teachers. His ideas and principles will help teachers become the best they can possibly be. He addresses such questions as:
"What is unique about Christian education?
"Are some approaches to Christian teaching more appropriate than others?
"Is there a different way of learning not just information gathering that impacts faith matters?
"What skills does the teacher need to possess for effective instruction in the church?

Are You Tired of Comfortable Christianity?
Disciples. Most Christians know little other than Christ had twelve of them and that He commissioned these men to make disciples of all nations. But just what is a 20th-century disciple and how do you go about becoming one?
Walt Henrichsen not only describes a modern disciple but explains how to make disciples of others. It's a process that begins with sharing the Good News of the Gospel and doesn't end until you've shared your life so completely with another person that he is fully committed to similar spiritual service.
Discipleship is real sacrifice, but the reward is great-the satisfaction of knowing you have followed obediently in the footsteps of the Disciple-Maker Himself, Jesus Christ.
Walt Henrichsen, for many years associated with The Navigators in a leadership role, has since 1977 headed a discipling ministry for lay Christians in the business world. He has written a number of books, including this classic, first published in 1974. Walt and his wife, Leette, live in El Cajon, California.

For more than forty years this classic study has challenged and instructed more than 1.5 million readers in reaching the world for Christ. With a foreword by Billy Graham and now repackaged for a new generation of readers, The Master Plan of Evangelism will show every Christian how to minister to the people God brings into their lives.
Instead of drawing on the latest popular fad or the newest selling technique, Robert E. Coleman looks to the Bible to find the answer to the question, What was Christ's strategy for evangelism? Through a thorough examination of the gospel accounts, Coleman points out unchanging, simple, yet profound biblical principles of how to emulate Christ to others. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'Natural Church Development: A Guide to Eight Essential Qualities of Healthy Churches'
Critics of the church growth movement have often emphasized the need for quality congregations. We should not focus on numerical growth, but rather, we should concentrate on qualitative growth.
Christian Schwarz has done extensive research world-wide and found that healthy, growing churches seem to share eight quality characteristics. These characteristics are:
Empowering leadership
Gift-oriented ministry
Passionate spirituality
Functional structures
Inspiring worship service
Holistic small groups
Need-oriented evangelism
Loving relationships
Schwarz uses the illustration of a barrel with eight staves to symbolize the eight quality characteristics. The barrel can only hold water to the height of the lowest stave. So too, Schwarz argues, a church can only grow as far as their 'Minimum factor,' which is the lowest of the eight quality characteristics in their church. He challenges churches to resist the temptation to work on improving areas in which they already excel, for by doing this they do not increase their minimum factor or their church quality.
This revised version of Natural Church Development now includes Schwarz's "3 Colors" teaching. [via]

Public education in America has run into hard times. Even many within the system admit that it is failing. While many factors contribute, Douglas Wilson lays much blame on the idea that education can take place in a moral vacuum. It is not possible for education to be nonreligious, deliberately excluding the basic questions about life. All education builds on the foundation of someone's worldview. Education deals with fundamental questions that require religious answers. Learning to read and write is simply the process of acquiring the tools to ask and answer such questions.
A second reason for the failure of public schools, Wilson feels, is modern teaching methods. He argues for a return to a classical education, firm discipline, and the requirement of hard work.
Often educational reforms create new problems that must be solved down the road. This book presents alternatives that have proved workable in experience.
"Good at diagnosing our educational afflictions, Douglas Wilson is still better at finding remedies. His Logos School provides a model, a practical design, for the restoration in the curriculum of Christian humanism--as contrasted with what Christopher Dawson called secular humanism." --Russell Kirk, D. Litt., editor, The University Bookman

This book was a text book for a class that I took on Sunday School Leadership. At first the book seemed to be alright. The first few chapters were ok but towards the end every time that I picked it up it just made me furious. It had all these ideas on how to reach the "prospects" in your realm of influence. The problem was that "prospects" was all that they were. It was all about what we call the great commission of making disciples but never mentioned what Jesus called the great commandment. Loving people was not part of the 10 best practices. The book was hollow methodology. [via]
