Welcome back to the world of Helen Oxenbury's Alice! An exuberant edition of the Lewis Carroll masterpiece, lavishly illustrated by one of the most beloved children's book artists of our time.
Helen Oxenbury's ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND set a new standard for contemporary editions of Lewis Carroll's beloved classic. And now she has illustrated its companion, ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING- GLASS, with equal intimacy, warmth, and charm. Here again is Alice, dressed in her bright blue jumper and ready for adventure like any modern child. All it takes is a bit of curiosity about the room reversed in the mirror and suddenly Alice is in the Looking-Glass world with all manner of comical and magical characters Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the lion and the unicorn, and a whole game board of chess pieces come to life.
On page after page, Helen Oxenbury's incomparable line drawings, sepia illustrations, and full-color paintings give today's children their own utterly accessible view into Lewis Carroll's timeless nonsense. [via]

"And what is the use of a book," thought Alice, "without pictures or conversations?"
Taking to heart his charming, insatiably curious heroine's words, Lewis Carroll worked many long hours (days, months...) with illustrator Sir John Tenniel to create the most perfect pictures imaginable for what were to become instant classics: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. When thinking about Alice and her dreamy surrealistic adventures down the rabbit hole and behind the looking-glass, who can help picturing the golden-haired girl in her lilac dress and striped stockings, gazing up at the Cheshire Cat or arguing with Tweedledum and Tweedledee? Tenniel's drawings remained black and white for over 40 years until 1911, when eight prints in each book were hand colored. Now, for the first time, every remaining illustration has been colored, making these the first editions to feature all of the original art in full color. Traditionalists need not worry: colorist Diz Wallis colored proofs taken from Tenniel's carefully preserved woodblocks, remaining faithful to his original drawings. The beautiful tones of these new hardcover editions look as natural as can be; they could just as easily be from the 19th century. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter [via]

Previously only available in facsimile form this edition of Lewis Carroll's predecessor to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is the very first to be set in type as a single volume and the first to be published with drawings other than those by Carroll himself.
All new artwork by noted illustrator and former underground cartoonist, Kim Deitch, perfectly matches the spontaniety of Carroll's original. Using the image of the real Alice Liddell as a model is just one of the ingenious innovations Dietch brings to this lively edition of Alice's Adventure's under Ground.
Mark Burstein, vice-president to the Lewis Carroll Society of North America and curator of one of the largest collections of Carroll books and memorabilia in the world, relates the historic importance of this books revolutionary impact in expanding the horizons of children's literature. [via]

Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) is famed for his magical stories, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, here illustrated throughout the inner pages by Sir John Tenniel's much loved drawings. However, inspired by the insatiable Victorian appetite for party games, tricks and conundrums, this eccentric and polymathical Englishman also wrote many other works of a humorous, witty, whimsical and nonsensical nature such as the mock-heroic nonsense verse 'The Hunting of the Snark', as well as dozens of other verses, stories, acrostics and puzzles, all of which are included in this volume. Oxford scholar, Church of England Deacon, University Lecturer in Mathematics and Logic, academic author of learned theses, gifted pioneer of portrait photography, colourful writer of imaginative genius and yet a shy and pedantic man, Lewis Carroll stands pre-eminent in the pantheon of inventive literary geniuses. 'They sought it with thimbles, they sought it with care; They pursued it with forks and hope; They threatened its life with a railway share; They charmed it with smiles and soap'. Ever since Lewis Carroll's nonsense epic appeared in 1876, readers have joined his ten-man Snark-hunting crew and pursued the search with great enthusiasm. What are they hunting for? What is the Snark? Numerous theories have been proposed. Carroll himself provides a helpful preface to the poem and is recorded as having explained to one reader: 'In answer to your question, 'What did you mean the Snark was?' will you tell your friend that I meant that the Snark was a Boojum. I trust that she and you will now feel quite satisfied and happy'.This edition, previously published as "The Annotated Snark", reproduces the original illustrations by Henry Holiday, including the 'supressed' Boojum drawing. Martin Gardner provides an introduction, notes and bibliography, and an Appendix contains F. C. S. Schiller's "Commentary on the Snark" and J. A. Lyndon's "Fit the Seven-and-a-Halfth". [via]

This beautiful, 868-page leather-bound volume contains a delightful collection of stories from one of history's most beloved children's authors. Lewis Carroll's stories are still as fresh and appealing as when they were first published more than a century ago. John Tenniel's original illustrations accompany the Alice stories and bring to life the wildly popular characters so well known to us all: the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, and a passel of others.
Carroll, one of 11 children, knows his audience well. His stories--clever, provocative, and bizarre--capture the imaginations of children worldwide. Though a prolific storyteller from childhood, he went on to become a mathematician, a fact evidenced by the Tangled Tales serial, which contains a mathematical equation in each installment.
Other stories included in this collection are "The Hunting of the Snark," which was composed backward, in a sense, when inspiration for the tale came by way of the last line; "Rhyme? And Reason?"; the Sylvie and Bruno books; and the original Alice story, "Alice's Adventures Underground," penned and illustrated in Carroll's own hand. Two never-before-printed poems, originally inscribed in two storybooks and presented as mementos to a little girl and boy, conclude this enchanting collection. [via]

Since its first publication, Logic of Sense has become a famous work of philosophical criticism, Working from Stoic philosophy to Lewis Carroll's literary and logical paradoxes and on to psychoanalysis, Deleuze seeks to determine the status of meaning and meaninglessness. Deleuze's exploration takes the reader through a series of inquiries with language, games, sexuality, schizophrenia and literature. Logic of Sense is one of Deleuze's seminal books not least in illuminating his most famous collaboration, with Felix Guattari, Anti-Oedipus. [via]

Yes, this is the Lewis Carroll who wrote Alice in Wonderland, and these two works show the same quirky humor. Here you see Carroll the mathematician at his playful best. Don't let the title of the first work mislead you--this isn't about modern symbolic logic but about ways of expressing classical logic with symbols. It's loaded with amusing problems to delight any mathematical puzzler. In the second work he turns logic into a game played with diagrams and colored counters, giving you hundreds of challenging and witty syllogisms to solve. Great mind-stretching fun. [via]

As Apsley Cherry-Garrard states in his introduction to the harrowing story of the Scott expedition to the South Pole, "Polar Exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised." Cherry-Garrard's The Worst Journey in the World is a gripping account of an expedition gone disastrously wrong. The youngest member of Scott's team, the author was later part of the rescue party that eventually found the frozen bodies of Scott and three men who had accompanied Scott on the final push to the Pole. These deaths would haunt Cherry-Garrard for the rest of his life as he questioned the decisions he had made and the actions he had taken in the days leading up to the Polar Party's demise.
Prior to this sad denouement, Cherry-Garrard's account is filled with details of scientific discovery and anecdotes of human resilience in a harsh environment. Each participant in the Scott expedition is brought fully to life. Cherry-Garrard's recollections are supported by diary excerpts and accounts from other teammates. Despite the sad fate of Scott, the reader will grudgingly agree with the closing words of The Worst Journey in the World: "Exploration is the physical expression of the Intellectual Passion. And I tell you, if you have the desire for knowledge and the power to give it physical expression, go out and explore.... If you march your Winter Journeys you will have your reward, so long as all you want is a penguin's egg." [via]
