The weeds of the field and garden have two big advantages in the kitchen: firstly, they are free to anyone; secondly, they contain any amount of dietary goodness, often not so readily available form the anemic products of the hothouse and intensive farm. And what is really needed is a set of recipes to turn them into everybody's favorite supper. This Vivien Weise provides in spades. With plenty of clear illustrations of the plants in question-ensuring that every reader will be able to identify the quarry when out gathering-Vivien has created a series of vegetarian dishes (all the recipes are meat-free_ with a defiantly modern slant: comfrey hamburgers, daisy ginger soup, dandelion salad with a banana yogurt sauce, dead nettle eggplant spread, ground elder layered pancakes, and many more. The great charm of this book is that you can go into the vegetable plot with two baskets: one for dinner and one for the compost heap. While gathering you supper, you weed the garden. In the popular weed-cookery courses the Vivien gives at her home in Germany, she demonstrates the culinary value of upwards of a hundred different plants. The value of weeds is a given in Mediterranean countries where wild-plant salads are commonplace. It was also understood by our own ancestors who recognized that many of these plants-now derided as pests-might actually taste nice (stinging nettle soup is but one hangover from this era), and that they also had a great therapeutic value: the lesser celandine, for instance, was a particular remedy for scurvy; the dandelion is a diuretic. They also have very high vitamin, mineral and protein content, especially in comparison with cultivated vegetables. For example, the dandelion has 3.3% protein per 100g (the lettuce 0.9%); ground elder has 648mg of vitamin A per 100g (broccoli 370mg); Good King Henry 3.5 mg of iron per 100g (swiss chard 2.2mg). Vivien Weise also writes travel books and has camped, cooked and visited all the world's continents. She now lives in Germany where she gives courses in weed cookery to an increasingly appreciative public. [via]

THE ENGLISH CONSTITUTION provides the most lucid and readable account of what has been termed the "Golden Age" of the nineteenth century constitution, before the advent of universal male suffrage and the rise of party as the overriding force in the British policy. Many of Bagehot's insights remain either true, as a statement of basic principle, or even if no longer strictly accurate, fascinating in their partial applicability today. they convey a sharp sense of how the constitution has radically changed since the Victorian era, and yet paradoxically at a more basic level, remained the same. When Welsh assault rock'n'rollers The Manic Street Preachers burst onto the British guitar band stage in 1992, they put the rest of the contenders to shame. In the wake of dance culture, rock bands had mostly abandoned the pure energy and subversive anger of punk and rock in favour of a laid-back hybrid of beats and murmurs. From a small town in Wales, The Manics reclaimed the purity of the form, playing their glam punk with a religious fervour. They had better clothes, slogans and interview technique than anyone since the late '70s and over two albums, '92s Generation Terrorists and '93s Gold Against The Soul, James Dean Bradfield, Richey Edwards, Nicky Wire and Sean Moore fast-tracked from cult heroes to national talking point, offending and confronting as they went and firing off brilliant anthems for the alienated. The self-destructive tendencies of guitarist Richey Edwards provided a melodramatic subplot to the music, as he progressed from carving the words 4 REAL into his arm during an interview, to his final unsolved disappearance prior to the release of '94s The Holy Bible. Like Nirvana, The Manics were always more than just another capable band, and their rise to international stadium-filling status in the aftermath of Edwards' exit has not entirely dissipated their aura. Japanese photographer Mitch Ikeda began shooting the band on their early tours in Japan and became closely involved with their visuals. His elegant images of before and after Richey brilliantly capture their rock-stars-in-leopard-skin flamboyance, as well as framing the fragility and existential doubt that lurked behind the vicious wall of chords. Like Anton Corbjin with US, Ikeda got inside their identity and defined them absolutely. This book, the official memento of ten years of Manic mayhem, includes reminiscence and commentary from the remaining members of the band and an original foreword by Nicky Wire. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'The Heiresses of Buccleuch: Marriage, Money, and Politics in Seventeenth-Century Britain'
This is the true story of what happened to two very wealthy heiresses in a society where money, not love, dictates marriage. Mary and Anna Scott were the daughters of Francis Scott, Earl of Buccleuch, who died in 1651 when they were small children, leaving an estate with the largest income in Scotland. They each inherited this fortune because Mary, the elder, died first and childless. This book tells of their marriages, their husbands and their ultimate destiny. It is also the story of their father, their much-married mother, Margaret Leslie and their wicked and greedy uncles, continually scheming to lay hands on their fortune. Other major players include Anna's father-in-law King Charles II, General Monck, who restored Charles to his throne, Oliver Cromwell and his son Richard, and the Earl of Lauderdale, iron-fisted dictator of Scotland, with innumerable politicians, both English and Scottish, in supporting roles. Played out against the background of a strife-torn Scotland in the 1650s, and then of the uncertain calm and sexual permissiveness of Charles II's restored monarchy, this is a story of money and the pursuit of money, of marriages, of family quarrels, aristocratic chicanery and political intrigue of all kinds. Maurice Lee Jr is the author of "Government by Pen: The Scotland of King James VI and I", "The Road to Revolution", "Scotland Under Charles I: 1625-1637" and "Great Britain's Solomon: King James VI and I in His Three Kingdoms". This edition of one of ShakespeareÂ's best known and most frequently performed plays argues for Julius Caesar as a new kind of political play, a radical departure from contemporary practice, combining fast action and immediacy with compelling rhetorical language, and finding a clear context for its study of tyranny in the last decade of the reign of Elizabeth 1. The richly experimental verse and the complex structure of the play are analysed in depth, and a strong case is made for this to be the first play to be performed at ShakespeareÂ's Globe Theatre. 'Daniell's edition is a hefty piece of serious scholarship that makes a genuine contribution.' Eric Rasmussen, University of Nevada at Reno, Shakespeare Survey 'This is a stimulating new look at a play which is too often exhibited in a critical museum.' Paul Dean, English Studies [via]

The Royal Opera House is located on the north side of Covent Garden London, in the heart of what was the Middle Saxon settlement of Lundenwic. This settlement was flourishing centre for trade and manufacture from the 7th to 9th centuries. Urban redevelopment in 1996 included the largest excavation yet undertaken in the area, providing a wealth of information about the settlement, its inhabitants, their work and daily lives. This well illustrated publication reports on the results of the excavations, describes a sequence of occupation, and considers more general themes such as the relationship of the Middle Saxon settlement to Roman Londinium, Saxon crafts and industry, the agricultural economy, trade, and demography. The discoveries included an 8th century street plan, specialised industrial buildings, rubbish and debris from a jewellery workshop, evidence of ironworking and, most importantly, a 9th-century defensive ditch with a hoard of Northumbrian stycas buried in its berm. The ditch was probably a response to Viking attack, but failed to prevent the Viking occupation of Lundenwic in 871. The book also looks at the medieval and post-medieval development of the area and numerous, brief specialist reports on the finds and environmental remains. [via]

As a lot of people reading this will already know, the first book published by S.T. Publishing was Spirit Of 69 - A Skinhead Bible back in 1991. Originally, a mainstream publisher in London was going to release it, but after a few months of pissing me about, I decided to do it myself.
I wrote Spirit Of 69 - A Skinhead Bible not because I think Im some sort of expert on skinheads, but because I passionately believed that the history of the cult, warts and all, had to be written from the inside.
The idea behind Spirit Of 69 was to offer a view of the cult from within, and one so detailed that it would stand proud amidst the reams and reams of complete nonsense that have been written about skinheads over the years. The end result was a book that covered the history of the cult and its music from the late Sixties to the present day, and one that celebrated the skinhead way of life without dodging any issues or pulling any punches. It isnt perfect, but is now acknowledged as the most accurate guide to the cult currently available, and certainly comes far closer to the truth than countless newspaper headlines have ever done.
Skinhead Nation is in many ways both a companion to Spirit Of 69 and an opportunity to concentrate more on the individuals that make up the cult, rather than the events and music that have shaped its history. The hope is that Skinhead Nation will show skinheads as the individuals they are, and celebrate the skinhead cult as it was in various parts of the world in the mid 1990s. Like Spirit Of 69, Skinhead Nation is far from a complete guide to the skinhead way of life and its not perfect, but again Ive done my best, and if just one person reads this and walks away with a better understanding of the skinhead cult then it has been worth doing. Shakespeare's most violent and gory play, Titus Andronicus was written in 1592, and represents the dramatist's first foray into the popular genre of revenge tragedy (many editors argue with at least one other collaborator). The result was spectacular, including scenes of murder, human sacrifice, rape, bodily mutilation and cannibalism. Set in late-imperial Rome, the action begins with the Roman general Titus Andronicus and his triumphant return from wars with the Goths. Leading Queen Tamora and her sons as prisoners, Titus stumbles into a power struggle between Saturninus and his brother Bassianus. Titus fatally backs Saturninus, who rapidly turns on the old general and marries Tamora. The implications for the Andronicus family are disastrous. More of Titus' sons are killed, his daughter Lavinia is brutally raped by Tamora's sons, and as Titus begins his descent into madness and despair he even has his own hand cut off in an act of awful trickery. As Titus plots his bloody revenge, he reflects that "Rome is but a wilderness of tigers". The ending is one of the most gruesome conclusions to any dramatic tragedy, and leaves Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs looking quite restrained. Although the play has put audiences off for centuries due to its apparently gratuitous violence, more recently critics have discerned something more to it than pure shock, but that might say more about us than the Elizabethans. .--Jerry Brotton [via]

One of Shakespeare's most political plays, Julius Caesar continued Shakespeare's interest in Roman history, first developed in Titus Andronicus. Drawing on Plutarch, the great historian of Rome, Shakespeare dramatises one of the most crucial moments in Roman history--the assassination of Julius Caesar. Loved by the Roman crowd but increasingly feared by the Senators, Caesar increasingly shows signs of his desire to abolish the Republic and crown himself emperor. A conspiracy is hatched, led by Cassius and Brutus, who murder Caesar on the steps of the Capitol. Mourning over his dead friend's body, Mark Antony gives one of the famous rhetorical speeches in literature, asking "Friends, Romans, Countrymen" to lament Caesar's death, privately vowing to "let slip the dogs of war" against those who have shed Caesar's blood. Antony joins forces with Caesar's son Octavius to defeat Cassius and Brutus in battle, and establish an uneasy alliance whose collapse is dramatised in Shakespeare's later play Antony and Cleopatra. Written at the end of Queen Elizabeth's reign, Julius Caesar has been seen by many as a radically pro-Republican play which sailed close to the political wind of the time. --Jerry Brotton [via]
