After waking one morning to find a new baby brother in a basket by his bed, toddler pig Benny is thrilled--for about 15 seconds. Long enough for the baby to start squalling and their mother to give him a binky. "I want a binky, too," says a disillusioned Benny. But apparently he's too big for a binky. Benny, whose MO is to hit the highway when things don't go his way (Benny's Had Enough), manages to exchange his Little Piggy doll for his brother's binky, and takes off for an afternoon of peace, quiet, and binky-sucking. Unfortunately, it's not only his mother who thinks he's too old for a binky.
Barbro Lindgren and Olof Landström (Boo and Baa in the Woods) make an unbeatable creative team. Benny's ingenuous expressions even as he misbehaves, and his pure joy when he finally gets his first taste of the coveted binky, are simply priceless, as is Lindgren's understated narrative: "He is happy. The binky is good." We will follow Lindgren and Landström to the ends of the earth for the chance to read any of their books. (Ages 2 to 6) --Emilie Coulter [via]

Maggie Moran's mission is to connect and unite people, whether they want to be united or not. Maggie is a meddler and as she and her husband, Ira, drive 90 miles to the funeral of an old friend, Ira contemplates his wasted life and the traffic, while Maggie hatches a plant to reunite her son Jesse with his long-estranged wife and baby. As Ira explains, "She thinks the people she loves are better than they really are, and so then she starts changing things around to suit her view of them." Though everyone criticizes her for being "ordinary," Maggie's ability to see the beauty and potential in others ultimately proves that she is the only one fighting the resignation they all fear. The book captured the Pulitzer Prize for literature in 1989. [via]

A collection of thirteen original and illuminating essays representing the latest scholarship drawn from the Baltimore History Conference of 1996 and 1999 and ranging across a wide spectrum of subjects. Touching upon such varied facets of Baltimore life as an early murder trial, alley houses, volunteer fire companies, slums, secession, post-Civil War racial accomodation, World War II aircraft workers, a populist uprising in the 1960s, public housing, and the school system, the authors amply demonstrate yet again that small subjects give rise to larger ideas. Russell Baker won the 1982 Pulitzer Prize for this biography/autobiography about growing up in the backwoods of Virginia, in a New Jersey Commuter town, and in the Depression-shadowed urban landscape of Baltimore, all happening between the world wars. Baker introduces us to the people that impacted his early life, and he also discusses powerful love, awkward sex, and courage in the face of adversity. The Great Depression provided the backdrop against success, and to help his mother and family through it, he delivered papers and hustled subscriptions of the Saturday Evening Post, which introduced him to bullies, mentors, and heroes who faced national disaster with hard work and good cheer. "You can't make this stuff up." You hear this refrain many times throughout The Innkeeper Tales. Modeled loosely on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, this collection of stories is told by business travelers whiling away a long day, stranded at The Abacrombie by an early spring blizzard. With Herman (the real-life Abacrombie owner) keeping the food and conversations going, each traveler tells a story drawn from his own life.
All the stories are true, coming from conversations heard in the inn's breakfast room. Several men talk about how their career paths diverged quickly and completely from their original intent (and training). One talks about his Air Force experience. The "rebuilder" confesses his uncontrollable urge to make shiny new things out of collapsing old things. Tony, "the car guy", is moved to describe his many beauties and clunkers. A collector of rare books explains how he got hooked, inspiring another to share his tale of becoming addicted to his wife's auction scavenging and furniture restoration.
But at the heart of the Tales is another kind of restoration: the rebuilding of lives, the refurbishing of the teller's sense of self.
Like the listeners sprawled in the inn's breakfast room, the reader of The Innkeeper Tales will have a rich learning and laughing experience, with a big surprise at the end. [via]

Frederick Douglass (1817?-1895) was born into slavery by a slave mother and an unknown father. At the age of 8, he started to educate himself with the help of his master's wife. In 1838, he fled Baltimore for the North. There he soon became a noted author and speaker on slavery.
Douglass wrote three autobiographies, "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass" (1845), "My Bondage and My Freedom" (1855) and "Life and Times of Frederick Douglass" (1881). Quiet Vision publishes all three plus the "Selected Works of Frederick Douglass", a collection of short works and speeches.
A man ahead of his time, in the 1840's he had to be dragged from the railroad cars reserved for whites. He also protested the dual standard of certain churches in having separate worship. [via]

Born into a family of slaves, Frederick Douglass educated himself through sheer determination. His unconquered will to triumph over his circumstances makes his one of Americas best and most unlikely success stories. Douglass own account of his journey from slave to one of Americas great statesmen, writers, and orators is as fascinating as it is inspiring.
This Prestwick House Literary Touchstone Edition includes a glossary and readers notes to help the modern reader contend with Douglass nineteenth-century style and vocabulary. [via]

In 1965, the happy Bedloe family is living an ideal, apple-pie existence in Baltimore. Then, in the blink of an eye, a single tragic event occurs that will transform their lives forever--particularly that of seventeen-year-old Ian Bedloe, the youngest son, who blames himself for the sudden "accidental" death of his older brother.
Depressed and depleted, Ian is almost crushed under the weight of an unbearable, secret guilt. Then one crisp January evening, he catches sight of a window with glowing yellow neon, the CHURCH OF THE SECOND CHANCE.
