"I cannot draw you a picture of Peter and Benjamin underneath the basket," writes Beatrix Potter in The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, "because it was quite dark, and because the smell of onions was fearful; it made Peter Rabbit and little Benjamin cry." Beatrix Potter's animal stories, the first of which was published in 1902, have been a joy to generations of young readers. This deluxe volume collects all of Beatrix Potter's 23 Peter Rabbit tales and verses together--complete and unabridged--in one book. All the original illustrations, both color and black and white, are included. The stories are arranged in the order in which they were first published to enable them to be read in the proper sequence, from A Tale of Peter Rabbit to The Tale of Little Pig Robinson. Beatrix Potter's tales were often connected with real places, people, or animals, so each story also includes a brief introductory note about its history. For example, "The story of naughty Peter Rabbit in Mr. McGregor's garden first appeared in a picture letter Beatrix Potter wrote to Noel Moore, the young son of her former governess, in 1893." In addition to the original 23 tales, this edition contains two early narrative picture sequences, Three Little Mice and The Rabbit's Christmas Party. And, there are two charming little stories, The Sly Old Cat and The Fox and the Stork, which were originally intended to be worked up into books, but remained unpublished. This beautiful introduction to the world of Beatrix Potter is sure to remain on the family bookshelf for generations to come. (Baby to Preschool) [via]

A die-cut hole through each colorful page creates a handle just right for little fingers, and a clear plastic window in the cover is filled with small beads that make a pleasant clatter when shaken. Look within for a short, baby-appropriate romp through Peter Rabbit's world. The mischievous blue-jacketed bunny hops, crunches vegetables, plays "hide and... peek," and rattles to his heart's content, all to the accompanying din of click-clacking beads. Very young "readers" will enjoy their first taste of Beatrix Potter's classic stories in this lively, round-edged novelty book, and may be eager to meet another beloved character, Jemima Puddle-Duck, in Jemima, Rattle!. The quintessential cautionary tale, Peter Rabbit warns naughty children about the grave consequences of misbehaving. When Mrs. Rabbit beseeches her four furry children not to go into Mr. McGregor's garden, the impish Peter naturally takes this as an open invitation to create mischief. He quickly gets in over his head, when he is spotted by farmer McGregor himself. Any child with a spark of sass will find Peter's adventures remarkably familiar. And they'll see in Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail that bane of their existence: the "good" sibling who always does the right thing. One earns bread and milk and blackberries for supper, while the obstinate folly of the other warrants medicine and an early bedtime.
Beatrix Potter's animal stories have been a joy to generations of young readers. Her warm, playful illustrations in soft colors invite children into the world of words and flights of fancy. Once there, she gently and humorously guides readers along the path of righteousness, leaving just enough room for children to wonder if that incorrigible Peter will be back in McGregor's garden tomorrow. Squirrel Nutkin, who has "no nice manners" at all, goes with his brother, Twinkleberry, and their many squirrel cousins to hunt for nuts on Owl Island.
Twinkleberry and the cousins politely request permission from Old Brown, the resident owl, and bring him gifts to express their appreciation as they eagerly gather nuts on several trips. But Nutkin will have none of this. Instead, he rudely poses silly riddles for the owl to solve. Old Brown appears to be totally indifferent, but his anger is rising. Little readers will enjoy learning how Old Brown takes his revenged and what becomes of Squirrel Nutkin! [via]

When Beatrix Potter wrote and illustrated "The Tale of Peter Rabbit, " she had little idea how popular this story and the 22 which followed it would immediately become. Each of the 23 "Tales" has reprinted over 100 times, and in the 80 or so years since their initial publication, much of the delicate brushwork and detail has disappeared from the pictures.
To remedy this, Frederick Warne has located Beatrix Potter's original artwork, and photographed it to produce these wonderful new edition of her stories. Thanks to modern printing techniques, her illustrations appear just as freshly as when they were first painted, and confirm Beatrix Potter's place as the most celebrated children's artist of the century.
