› Find signed collectible books: 'The Automatic Message: The Magnetic Fields ; The Immaculate Conception'
This book collects together the two most vital "automatic" texts of Surrealism. Bretons prefatory essay The Automatic Message relates this technique to the underlying concepts and aesthetic of the Surrealist movement.
The Magnetic Fields (1919) was the first work of literary Surrealism and is thus one of the foundations of modern European thought and writing. This authorised translation is by the poet David Gascoyne, himself a member of the group and a friend of both authors.
The Immaculate Conception (1930) traces the interior and exterior life of man from Conception and Intra-Uterine Life to Death and The Original Judgement. The central section is a celebrated series of "simulations" of various types of mental instability.
Maurice Nadeau (in The History of Surrealism) described the book as "An astonishing series of poems in prose, more brilliant than those of either Breton or Eluard on his own . . . if all that remained of the Surrealist movement were the pages of The Immaculate Conception, man, alerted, could not turn away from the astounding mystery of his condition." › Find signed collectible books: 'Dan Flavin: A Retrospective'
Dan Flavin (19331996) is considered one of the most important and innovative artists of the late twentieth century. The simplicity and systematic character of his extraordinary work, along with his relentless exploration and ingenious discovery of an art of light, established him as a progenitor and chief exponent of Minimalism. Uniquely situated outside the mediums of painting and sculpture, the majority of Flavins work after 1963 consists of art made from light.
This landmark bookthe first retrospective publication of Flavins art since 1969includes around 45 of the artists most important light works, beginning with a pivotal series of constructed boxes with attached incandescent or fluorescent lights, called icons, made from 1961 to 1963. Works spanning Flavins career are discussed in depth, including examples that integrate light with the surrounding space and show the particular characteristics of blended fluorescent light, large-scale installations, and constructed corridors. The book also includes reproductions of Flavins drawings, which show his thought processes and working methods.
New scholarship and interpretation of Flavins work appears in the form of three critical essays by experts, an extensive chronology, comprehensive bibliography, and exhibition history. In addition, Flavins seminal text . . . in daylight or cool white. an autobiographical sketch, originally published in Artforum in 1965, is included.
Exquisitely designed and produced, with many new stunning color reproductions, Dan Flavin: A Retrospective captures the brilliance of this artists contribution to and challenges of the art world and will be the authoritative volume on Flavin for years to come.

From the publisher: "Stephen Barker has taken a camera into spaces whose existence hinges on their being unrecorded and anonymous. His photographs were taken in New York City's sex clubs. Caught in only available light, Barker's subjects swim in a murky world of isolation and sexual couplings, emerging out of a granular darkness to watch, to partake, to wait. The interactions are often ambiguous-layers of yearning veiled under the chivalrous codes of promiscuity. The indistinct figures merge and melt into the industrial architecture of darkened cinemas and hallways reserved for anonymous sex, but there are flashes of clarity even here-tenderness or indifference, passion or release." IN MERRY ENGLAND in the time of old, when good King Henry the Second ruled the land, there lived within the green glades of Sherwood Forest, near Nottingham Town, a famous outlaw whose name was Robin Hood. No archer ever lived that could speed a gray goose shaft with such skill and cunning as his, nor were there ever such yeomen as the sevenscore merry men that roamed with him through the greenwood shades. Contributors to Tape Delay include: Marc Almond - Dave Ball - Cabaret Voltaire - Nick Cave - Chris & Cosey - Coil - Einsturzende Neubauten - The Fall - Diamanda Galas - Genesis P. Orridge - Michael Gira - The Hafler Trio - Matt Johnson (The The) - Laibach - Lydia Lunch - New Order - Psychic TV - Boyd Rice - Henry Rollins - Clint Ruin - Sonic Youth - Stevo - Mark Stewart - Swans - Test Dept. - David Tibet (Current 93)
In 1984 author Charles Neal set about interviewing the major protagonists working in sound, word and image. Concentrating on the most challenging and confrontational, he deliberately chose those individuals and groups most at odds with the mainstream. His aim to produce a collection that reflected the cutting edge of the Eighties underground.
With only his tape recorder as defence, he solicited hundreds of hours of interview material, as well as photos, original writing and illustrations. His findings were as intriguing and diverse as the artists included. Often encompassing the taboo and perverse, the opinions of Nick Cave, Genesis P.Orridge and Michael Gira now read like lone voices against the tide of creeping commerciality that abounded in the Eighties music scene.
Those such as Coil, Einsturzende Neubauten and Lydia Lunch are still gnawing away at the boundaries of respectability, while New Order, Sonic Youth and Henry Rollins have become internationally renowned. Clearly, the confrontational legacy of the artists included within Tape Delays myriad pages is still visible in todays musical world, whether it be in the industrial rhythms of Nine Inch Nails or the ambient undercurrents of Orbital or Underworld. Years later, this invaluable collection still makes for fascinating reading both as historical document and as signpost to future actions. [via]

After decades of neglect following his death in 1925, Willard Metcalf is tody rightly recognized as one of the greatest interpreters of the American landscape. Much of his reputation rests on paintings from the last 20 years of his life, when he concentrated on intimate views and sweeping vistas of the rural New England he knew so well. By this time, Metcalf had found the means to express a singular vision, and while he sometimes edited his compositions, his canvases captured the essence of the New England countryside with a compelling naturalism and powerful sense of place. This book takes a retrospective view by including paintings from all phases of his career. Metcalf was, in fact, remarkably talented from the start, as a precocious 16-year-old apprentice. His steady progress can be charted through his early work along the New England coast in the late 1870s to his sojourn in the Southwest a few years later. The paintings that he completed during his study and travel in Europe and North Africa in the 1880s confirm his increasing strength and self-confidence, while his work from the 1890s and the first few years of the 20th century evidences the virtuosity and craftsmanship that culminated in his later success. Three comprehensive introductory essays are by Richard J. Boyle, Bruce W. Chambers, and William H. Gerdts. [via]

Born and raised in Mississippi and Tennessee, William Eggleston began taking pictures during the 1960s after seeing Henri Cartier-Bresson's The Decisive Moment. In 1966 he changed from black and white to color film, perhaps to make the medium more his own and less that of his esteemed predecessors. John Sarkowski, when he was curator of photography at the Museum of Modern Art, called Eggleston the "first color photographer," and certainly the world in which we consider a color photograph as art has changed because of Eggleston. From 1966 to 1971, Eggleston would occasionally use a two and one quarter inch format for photographs. These are collected and published here for the first time, adding more classic Eggleston images to photography's color canon. [via]
