› Find signed collectible books: 'Andy Warhol: The Factory Years, 1964-1967'
New York City, the 1960s: Inside a ramshackle studio known as The Factory, the post-war art world encountered the industrial revolution. For more than two years, Nat Finkelstein was on the scene, documenting the explosive emergence of Pop Art, a subversive spectacle created by the constantly calculating Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol: The Factory Years is an extraordinary photographic account of the twisted, the addicted, the nameless, and the famous. As a member of the club, Finkelstein discreetly captured icons in the making, including Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Allen Ginsberg, Edie Sedgwick, and Nico, along with such legends of another era as Salvador Dali and Marcel Duchampand, of course, Warhol himself. Engagingly sequenced by renowned design firm Pentagram, Andy Warhol: The Factory Years features Finkelstein's seminal black-and-white photographs, in addition to several series of previously unpublished color photographs that were thought lost for the past three decades. Finkelstein accompanies these striking images with vivid memories, poetic recollections, and acerbic commentary, providing both visual and intellectual insight into the culture of The Factory. [via]

As perversions go, infantilism is little known, and even less understood. Imagine fully grown men wanting to revive their earliest days--dressed in diapers, dipped in baths, and "fed" from breasts--as a means to sexual stimulation or familial comfort. Now imagine trying to document this--yes, the thought that just popped into your head is right--and you have an idea of the Herculean effort Borland went through to grapple with and understand people with this type of fetish. Portrait-photographer-by-trade Polly Borland compassionately explores this surreal world, artfully framing the inner lives of adult babies alongside their outer manifestations. Many of these men, who function in society as truck drivers, accountants, and teachers, suffered as children and were left obsessed with the warmth and care experienced by other infants and toddlers. So they dress up in adult-sized baby clothes, powder their own bottoms, and...do what babies do, all in an attempt to recreate that lost attachment. And sometimes to get aroused. Accompanying these Arbus-like photographs are interviews with the babies themselves. The book, expertly sequenced by famed editor Mark Holborn, begins like the sweetest of lullabies, seducing us into a sense of lovely baby life... until about page 12. [via]

Considered by Kant to be the culmination of his critical philosophy, "The Critique of Judgement" was the last work in the trilogy begun with "The Critique of Pure Reason" and continued with "The Critique of Practical Reason". In this work Kant seeks to establish the a priori principles underlying the faculty of judgement, just as he did in his previous analyses of pure and practical reason. The first part deals with the subject of our aesthetic sensibility; we respond to certain natural phenomena as beautiful, says Kant, when we recognise in nature a harmonious order that satisfies the mind's own need for order. The second half of the critique concentrates on the apparent teleology in nature's design of organisms, i.e., organisms display a complex inter-working of parts, which are subordinated as means to serve the purpose of the whole. All of this suggests, concludes Kant, that our minds are inclined to attribute a final purpose to nature's design and to life as a whole. This natural tendency to see purpose in nature is the main principle underlying all of our judgements. Although this might imply a super-sensible Designer behind nature and a theistic interpretation of the world, in the final analysis Kant maintains an agnostic stance. Ever the objective philosopher he insists that though we are predisposed to read design and purpose into nature, we cannot therefore prove a supernatural dimension or the existence of God. Such considerations are beyond reason and are solely the province of faith. [via]

Howard Moss famously remarked of James Schuyler's poetry: "He is in touch with parts of himself not usually available for examination and not often handled by most writers." Moss was referring to a sexual honesty, but Schuyler is also unusually in touch with the everyday. He saw himself as an observer rather than philosopher, and made magic of what others deem commonplace, knowing there was more going on directly underneath. In his diary, there is much talk of weather, the sort that he turned into fine poetry ("This soft October," for example) and more quotidian fantasy. The entry for Thursday, March 16, 1989, begins: "On this brilliant, cool, delicious day the city seemed the work of a child who owns a pencil, a ruler, and a paint set." As the eighties draw on, his cat, Barbara, becomes a key player. Then again, in the lives of his friends, so does AIDS.
Schuyler's diary also served as a commonplace--in the other sense of the word-book. Quotes range from John Webster's great play The Duchess of Malfi to several passages from the memoir of Harry Daley, E.M. Forster's policeman lover; and Nathan Kernan has carefully annotated sources and filled in lacunae. Who knew that Cardinal Spellman's camp nickname was Minnie? What a delight to come upon the name of that Hitchcock-film actress Nova Pilbeam! James Schuyler thought himself as an observer, not a philosopher, but his poetry and prose are filled with decisive moments. Unlike some artists' personal records, his don't seem as if they were written with an eye to future publication. That doesn't decrease their casual intensity. [via]

Seventeen quilt artists and one watercolor artist agreed on a single concept, resulting in 34 artistic works - 17 in quilt form, and 17 companion paintings in watercolor. AUTHORBIO: Rod Buffington has been painting watercolor collage quilt patterns since 1980, and his work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States. A recognized leader in both civic and artistic endeavors, Buffington's unique watercolor art is widely collected and awarded. REVIEW: Rod Buffington is a painter who paints quilts on canvas. The detail is nothing short of flabbergasting. He contacted 17 leading quilt artists and asked each of them to make a quilt. They discussed some basic guidelines for each piece and then each artist worked without further consultation. The resulting pairs of work, each interpreting the same pattern and main fabric is a joy.... [via]

As much poem as it is play, Goethe's Faust is the spiritual quest of a soul determined to explore the very nature of Reality, a revolutionary work that refuses to accept limitations, but, like Romanticism itself, embraces all, the Natural World of everyday life, as well as the Great World of universal experience, the macrocosm as well as the microcosm. The Faust character, the Faustian soul, has become a universal concern. As multifarious as Hamlet and as mythic as Oedipus, he takes us on a journey to the depths and heights of experience and leaves us not the person we were before we met him. It is in Part One of Goethe's masterpiece that we discover Faust as the hero in whose being two contradictory forces collide. He is self-alienated man struggling to expand beyond the limitations of intellect and the known world, desperate to achieve a state, indeed mystical, where the opposites of Knowledge and Sensuality are One. Part One of Faust records that attempt in the context of earthly existence. Goethe's Faust has rightly been called the most audacious work in Western Civilization. [via]

Boasting to everyone that his forum would be grander than the Colosseum, Mussolini created the Stadio dei Marmi, or Stadium of Statues, an arena built outside Rome for the 1944 Olympic Games that were postponed by World War II. Believing a fascist state required the top level of physical fitness, Il Duce provided inspiration for his nation in the form of monumental art, commissioning sculptors from all over the country to create sixty Herculean statues of white marble to be put atop six-foot pedestals surrounding the stadium. The statues, based on figures from Italian war memorials, embodied the glorification of the athlete and the mannered heroism of the soldier. Startlingly erotic and poetic, each statue stands twelve feet tall, nude but for the occasional headband or sandals. So blatant was their sexual presence that the statues later provoked furtive attempts at decency involving fig leaves and loincloths.
Once relegated to the category of political kitsch, these statues have, in recent times, been re-evaluated and are being recognized as objects of beauty and merit. The Foro Italico&sustains a guileless, perhaps unique, male eroticism which is at odds with the grandiloquent intentions of its planner and creators in Mussolinis fascist regime, explains George Mott, who first glimpsed the statues in 1962 and photographed them twenty years later. His black-and-white and color images of the statues have been sought by collectors in Europe and America, and have been used repeatedly by fashion designers and art directors. In Foro Italico, for the first time, these photographs are being shown collectively, exquisitely reproduced in a remarkable, deluxe, slip-cased edition that includes an introduction by Giorgio Armani, himself a connoisseur of 1930s art and architecture. In Rebecca Barker's remarkable and colorful paintings, traditional quilts are blended into images of landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, and farm scenes in an imaginative way. Each evokes impressions of the pleasant and positive places that form the patchwork of our lives. Included are the patterns for piecing or appliqueing the blocks depicted in the paintings. Quiltmakers can choose from 24 well loved blocks, such as Whig Rose, Palm Leaf, Rose of Sharon, Wild Rose Wreath, Orange Basket, and Church Windows. Rebecca calls her paintings 'Quiltscapes' because they were inspired by the names of traditional quilt patterns. The author says, 'As an artist, I fully appreciate the composition and design talent it took to create the beautiful quilt patterns. It is my goal to honor the women who created the designs and to teach others the names of the patterns.' Making these historic quilt patterns will be fun for all ages. As an artistic and visual delight, it will also make a great gift for quiltmakers and for those who simply admire beautiful quilts. AUTHORBIO: Rebecca has always loved to paint, and she knew from an early age that she wanted to be an artist. She received her art training from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, and Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and has pursued a painting career ever since. Around 1994, having been a quilter for several years, she started to include quilts in her landscape paintings. The first of these depicts a quilt hanging on a clothesline in the foreground and a farm landscape in the background. REVIEW: This AQS book offers not just [Barker's] lovely paintings, but instructions for the quilts as well. Not surprisingly, the scenes and the quilts lean heavily toward the traditional, but at least one of the 24 patterns will speak to you. [via]
