Der wahrhaft opulente Band enthält alle gebauten oder Entwurf gebliebenen Case Study Houses. Das Programm der Modellhäuser wurde 1945 von John Entenza, dem Chefredakteur der Zeitschrift arts & architecture, erfunden. Es versammelte bis 1966 achtundzwanzig Prototypen kalifornischer Nachkriegs-Einfamilienhäuser von willkürlich ausgewählten Architekten. Obwohl sparsam aus industriellen Bauprodukten gefertigt, propagierten die Entwürfe großzügige, moderne Wohnformen und die Integration in die natürliche Landschaft. Die Palette reicht von ersten bescheidenen Häusern über die bekannteren von Charles Eames, Eero Saarinen und Richard Neutra bis zu den mondänen Realisierungen von Pierre Koenig und Craig Ellwood. In ihrer Modernität sind sie bis heute nur selten übertroffen.
Die 440 Seiten im A3-Format enthalten neben den großartigen Architekturaufnahmen auch Skizzen, Modellfotos, Perspektiven, detaillierte Ausführungspläne, die Originaltexte aus der Zeitschrift sowie Interviews und erläuternde Texte, alles in durchgängig hoher Qualität. Die Mehrzahl der Fotos stammt, wie das eingangs erwähnte Motiv, von dem bekannten amerikanischen Architekturfotografen Julius Shulman. Die Art und Weise, wie er in seinen Fotos die Häuser in ihrer Umgebung inszeniert und die Innen- und Außenräume ineinander fließen lässt, hat Maßstäbe gesetzt. Ergänzt werden die Darstellungen durch die Biografien aller Architekten und zwei Übersichtskarten zur Lage der Häuser.
Die Case Study Houses haben nichts von ihrem Wert eingebüßt. Sie atmen noch immer den Aufbruch in Licht, Luft und Freiheit einer industriellen und doch naturverbundenen Moderne. Man kann sich durch die Pläne träumen und in den wunderbaren Fotos schwelgen. Doch das Buch ist mehr als nur ein edles Präsent für den Architektengeburtstag. Die Vielfalt der sehr guten Entwürfe, die Skizzen und Baustellenfotos sind für Architekten und Interior-Designer eine echte Fundgrube. His long life and extraordinary work capacity - coupled with a sometimes furious perfectionism--he dedicated to a pictorial exploration of the sensations which reality, and in particular landscape offer the human eye. But while Monet the painter was faithful and persevering in the pursuit of his motifs, his personal life - characterized by frequent travels and changes of location -- followed a more restless course. Parisian by birth, he discovered plein-air painting as a youth in the provinces and sought to defy his family's insistence upon an academic painter's training. For over half his life the artist was plagued by financial worries, which in part precipitated the frequent moves made by his expanding household. Two of his homes stand out above the rest. The first, Argenteuil, has come to represent the artistic flowering and official establishment of Impressionism as a movement, with Monet as its creative leader. But it was also Monet who, in his endeavour to capture the ever-changing face of reality, went beyond Impressionism and thereby beyond the confines of the self-contained panel painting. This step he took in the village of Giverny: here he painted the Poplars, Grain Stacks and Rouen Cathedral series in which he addressed one motif in constantly new variations. Here, too, Monet laid out the famous garden with its water lily pond which he was to paint on huge canvases well into the 1920s. He thereby sought to render not reality as objectively experienced, but rather that which takes place 'between the motif and the artist'. Julius Shulman has documented buildings in that seemingly transparent way for more than six decades. This meticulous and prolific craftsman was in the right place, California, at the right time, the golden age of West Coast modern residential architecture that spanned the 1930s to the 1960s. Richard Neutra helped him get his start, and he recorded early modernists such as Wright, Schindler, Soriano, Harris, Frey, Ain, Stone, Gropius, Kahn, and Neutra, as well as younger ones such as Goff, Lautner, Ellwood, Koenig, Drake, Killingsworth, Eames, Greene, Legoretta, and even early Frank Gehry. His view camera captured the glamour of hillside steel-and-glass houses cantilevered above the city lights, the serenity of desert vacation homes at dusk, and the clean-lined ingenuity of young architects working on modest budgets.
Shulman's text is a knotty quasi biography, but some good stories lurk there. This is a physically impressive book: its 300 large-format pages contain 500 superbly reproduced color and black-and-white photos that are worth more than the proverbial thousand words each. --John Pastier [via]
