The artistic stagnation of Vienna at the end of the nineteenth century was rudely shaken by the artists of the Secession. Their works at first shocked a conservative public; but their successive exhibitions, their magazine "Ver Sacrum", and their application to the applied arts and architecture soon brought them an enthusiastic following and wealthy patronage. This book traces the course of this development, of the Wiener Werkstatte that followed, and the individual works of the artists concerned. Klimt, Olbrich, Loos and Hoffmann in architecture and applied arts. In other fields Mahler, Freud and Schnitzler were influencing the avant-garde. Peter Vergo quotes extensively from the writings of contemporary reviewers, critics and the artists themselves. He has eye-witness accounts of the exhibitions, the opening of the Secession building, the work in progress on the Palais Stoclet and Kabarett Fledermaus. The result is a documentary study of the successes and failures, hopes and fears of the members of an artistic movement which is still admired today. [via]

A beautiful and informative reference on the Arts and Crafts movement, one of the most popular design styles in the U.S. today. As a movement dedicated to the revival of traditional craftsmanship following the early mass production of the mid-19th century, Arts and Crafts evolved on both sides of the Atlantic, and its style became instantly recognizable. THE ARTS CRAFTS COMPANION traces the origins of the movement; discusses the personalities involved, such as William Morris, Edwin Lutyens, and Frank Lloyd Wright; and includes comprehensive chapters devoted to all aspects of Arts and Crafts style-architecture, interiors, furniture, wallpaper, textiles, applied arts, lighting, tiles and ceramics, glass and pottery, metalwork, embroidery, and the garden. Listings of manufacturers with illustrative samples, as well as an extensive source list, make this not only a beautiful volume for the casual admirer but an invaluable reference for the most ardent collector. Aubrey Vincent Beardsley, illustrator and writer, was the most notorious and outstanding artist of the fin de si?cle. His disturbing erotic drawings shocked the sensibilities of the Victorians and his friendship and collaboration with Oscar Wilde has secured his place in the pantheon of great artists of the 19th century. Jaques-Emile Blanche's portrait of Bearsley, his face 'like a silver hatchet', is the enduring image of this fabulously talented man who died at the age of just 25. Beardsley's most important illustrations were for Wilde's Salome, Popes The Rape of the Lock, The Lysistrata of Aristophanes and Jonson's Valpone. He was art editor of the hugely influential Yellow Book from which he was dismissed following the arrest of Wilde becoming thereafter the creative editor of the 'Savoy' magazine. He went on to write the highly erotic romance The Story of Venus and Tannhauser which was published in an unexpurgated version as Under the Hill. This extraordinary man created some of the most striking and enduring images of the last one hundred years. His influence on Oscar Wilde and his circle was profound and his achievements in such a short life is one of the great literary and artistic stories of the 19th century. [via]

This book is the first visual and historical study of the development of Art Nouveau architecture, and it surprisingly places Istanbul among such cities as Paris, Brussels, and Vienna as one of the great capitals of the style. This unprecedented study traces the transformation of Istanbul between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of World War I. Discussed in depth are the Ottoman Revival and beaux-arts and other European influences on the style, as well as its foremost practitioners. Many never before published photographs, plans, and drawings of Istanbul's palaces and luxurious homes make this a unique view into the architecture of the city in particular and of the Art Nouveau style in general. › Find signed collectible books: 'The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark'
Undoubtedly the most famous of all of Shakespeare's plays, Hamlet remains one of the most enduring but also enigmatic pieces of western literature. The story of Hamlet, the young Prince of Denmark, his tortured relationship with his mother, and his quest to avenge his father's murder at the hand of his brother Claudius has fascinated writers and audiences ever since it was written around 1600.
For many years interest focused on both Hamlet's inability to avenge his father's death, claiming that "the native hue of resolution / Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought", and, according to none other than Freud, his oedipal fixation with his mother. However, more recently critics have turned their attention to Hamlet's bold theatrical self-reflexivity (most famously reflected in the performance of "The Mousetrap"), its fascination with issues of theology and Renaissance humanism, and its dense, complex poetic language. What is so remarkable about the play is the way in which it tends to uncannily reflect the concerns of different epochs. As a result, Hamlet has been at different moments defined as a romantic rebel, an angst-ridden existentialist, a paralysed intellectual and an ambivalent New Man. Whatever subsequent generations make of Hamlet, they are unlikely to exhaust the possibilities of this most extraordinary play. --Jerry Brotton [via]
