In this systematic philosophical critique of the major tenets of Christianity, Michael Martin examines the semantic and epistemological bases of religious claims and beliefs. Beginning with a comparison and evaluation of the Apostles' Creed, the Niceno-Chalcedonian Creed, and the Athanasian Creed, Martin discusses the principal theological, historical, and eschatological assumptions of Christianity. These include the historicity of Jesus, the Incarnation, the Second Coming, the Virgin Birth, the Resurrection, Salvation through faith in Jesus, and Jesus as a model of ethical behavior. Until now, an adequately convincing criticism of Christianity did not exist. Martin's use of historical evidence, textual analysis, and interpretations by philosophers and theologians provides the strongest case made to date against the rational justification of Christian doctrines. Author note: Michael Martin, Professor of Philosophy at Boston University, is the author of "The Legal Philosophy of H.L.A. Hart (Temple) and Atheism: A Philosophical Justification (Temple)." [via]

Catholics' hunger for the faith continues to grow. Pope Benedict XVI gives the Church the "food" that is seeks in the 598 questions and answers in the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This 200-page volume offers a quick synopsis of the essential contents of the faith as promulgated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Like the 1992 Catechism, the Compendium has a four-part structure, and includes a section on common prayers and Catholic doctrinal formulas. Because of the question-and-answer format, catechetical leaders-parents, pastors, teachers, principals, and catechists-have a unique opportunity to dialogue with the faithful, and reinvigorate the Church's ongoing mission of evangelization and catechesis. Individuals can come "to know the unfathomable riches of the salvific mystery of Jesus Christ" by reading, using, and memorizing parts of the Compendium of the Catechism. An essential tool for youth and young adults, the Compendium is the perfect companion to a youth or young adult's Bible, spiritual reading, or textbook. Catechetical leaders in high schools, colleges, and parishes will appreciate its versatility-as a reference book, discussion starter, or core resource for RCIA programs. Fourteen images taken from masterpieces of Christian art set a tone for each part or section. "The sacred images, with their beauty, are also a proclamation of the Gospel and express the splendor of the Catholic truth," explained Pope Benedict XVI. The Compendium of the Catechism was prepared by a commission presided by the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. Following the request for greater appreciation of the Catechism, and in order to meet a widespread need that emerged during the 2002 International Catechetical Congress, in 2003 the Holy Father established a special commission, presided by the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, that he charged with preparing a Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, containing a more concise and dialogic version of the same contents of Catholic faith and morals. With its message of God's love for His Bride and believers' triumph in Christ, Destined for the Throne has been a rousing call to prayer for thousands.
God's eternal purpose, writes Paul Billheimer, has been the preparation and training of an eternal companion for His Son: the Bride of Christ. This preparation takes place as believers engage in spiritual warfare, as they exercise believing prayer. God has chosen to work in the world through His children's prayers; Christians need prayer in order to practice for their heavenly destiny.

"A Different Gospel," a book for the heart and the mind, is must reading for those who seek reliable information about the "Word of Faith" movement.
Every Christian should read this book in order to be aware of the dangerous implications of the widespread and cultic "Word of Faith" movement preaching what is popularly known as ""Name It and Claim It"" theology. "A Different Gospel" is a bold and revealing examination of the biblical and historical basis of this movement. This new and revised edition is complete with a foreword by Hank Hanegraaff, author of "Christianity in Crisis," and a new afterward by D. R. McConnell.
The author knows the movement first hand and has a heart for those snared by it. He is also an academically trained observer who has based his work on careful historical and biblical analysis. McConnell warns of the movement's cultic nature in its doctrine of healing and its understanding of the atonement and demonstrates how far the movement's doctrine of prosperity is from Scripture's true teaching. Flatland, like our own world, is on the verge of the millenium. On the last day of the year 1999, a Squarehitherto undistinguished from the other shapes of his two-dimensional worldreceives the Gospel of Three Dimensions, revealed to that world's flat inhabitants only once every a thousand years. Transformed by a truth he is unable to conceal, he is promptly condemned as a heretic. His poignant tale is itself a multi-dimensional creation, for it is not only a challenge to our most basic perceptions of everyday reality, but a sharp social satire and an illuminating mathematical treatise as well.
In the tradition of fantasy and social satire that includes Gulliver's Travels , Alice in Wonderland, and Animal Farm, Abbott pokes fun at the rigid class structure and concern for appearances of his Victorian society even as he poses an underlying question that is as provoking today as it was a century ago. Could we and everything we see around us be only a cross section for worlds of higher dimensions?

Gnosticism was a wide-ranging religious movement of the first millennium CEwith earlier antecedents and later flourishingswhose adherents sought salvation through knowledge and personal religious experience. Gnostic writings offer striking perspectives on both early Christian and non-Christian thought. For example, some gnostic texts suggest that god should be celebrated as both mother and father, and that self-knowledge is the supreme path to the divine. Only in the past fifty years has it become clear how far the gnostic influence spread in ancient and medieval religionsand what a marvelous body of scriptures it produced. This is the first time that such a rich and diverse collection of gnostic texts have been brought together in a single volume, in translations that allow the spirit of the original texts to shine. The selections gathered here, in poetic, readable translation, represent Jewish, Christian, Hermetic, Mandaean, Manichaean, Islamic, and Cathar expressions of gnostic spirituality. Their regions of origin include Egypt, the Greco-Roman world, the Middle East, Syria, Iraq, China, and France. Also included are introductions, notes, an extensive glossary, and a wealth of suggestions for further reading. [via]

Written by the man Time magazine called one of the seven best preachers in America, The Good Book is a brilliant and inspiring look at the Bible today. Beginning with a bracing crash course in biblical literacy and interpretation, Gomes proceeds to rescue the Bible from those who would misuse its passages to alienate and exclude. In stirring chapters on what the Bible says to us about anti-Semitism, women, homosexuality, and race, Gomes suggests new ways to read and interpret Scripture. Finally, with compassion, humor, and refreshing originality, Gomes seeks to illuminate what the Bible has to say about suffering, joy, evil, temptation, wealth, science, mystery, and the good life. This wise book gives us the tools we need to make the Bible a dynamic, living, and transforming part of our daily lives.
-- A major national bestseller: The Good Book appeared on The New York Times, USA Today, San Francisco Chronicle, Boston Globe, and Wordstock bestseller lists.
"Brilliant and thought-provoking...a wonderful road map to a text that, if read properly, can provide solace and wisdom in troubled times". -- Boston Globe

Does God's Sovereignty Make Human Freedom Meaningless? The Grace of God and the Will of Man brings together an impressive array of evangelical scholars from many traditions to examine the scope of God's saving purposes and His manner of working for the salvation of human beings.Developing the proposition that the dynamic, personal God of the Bible respects the freedom He has given to the human race, the essays in this book paint a picture of how God sensitively works out His plans for individuals and the whole of history. The writers of this volume don't claim the last word on this subject, but they make a convincing case for an evangelical alternative to deterministic theology.Dr. Clark H. The history of Christian theology is in large part a history of heresies, because Jesus and the claims he made . . . seemed incredible," writes the author. Heresies presents "the story of how succeeding generations of Christians through almost twenty centuries have tried to understand, trust, and obey Jesus Christ." Particularly concerned with christology and trinitarianism, the author calls on the four major creeds of the church--Apostles', Nicene, Athanasian, and Chalcedonian--to separate orthodoxy from heresy. He acknowledges that heresy has done much more than confuse and divide the church. It has also helped the church to classify orthodoxy. Just as heresy served this purpose historically, so it serves this purpose pedagogically in Heresies.
This volume presents a clarion call to evangelicals to preserve tenaciously "the faith once delivered to the saints." Frank E. James III wrote in the "Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society" "Brown deserves to be commended not only for his insightful scholarship and his readable style but also and more importantly for providing a sorely-needed jab to the soft underbelly of modern evangelicalism."

Mind on Fire is an easy-to-read translation of the classic Pensées by Blaise Pascal. Here the remarkable seventeenth-century mathematician, physicist, and religious thinker presents his uncompromising defense of the Christian faith a rigorous refutation of the myth that to become a Christian is to commit intellectual suicide.
Dr. James Houston has arranged Pascal's seemingly random meditations into a logical progression of thought the first time ever that an editor has carried out Pascal's original intention for his Pensées. Also included are selections from pascal's Letters to a Provincial, Pascal's own description of his conversion.
Dr. James Houston, editor of the CLASSICS OF FAITH AND DEVOTION, is a highly acclaimed scholar and pioneer in the field of evangelical spirituality. He came to North America from England in 1968 to lead Regent College in Vancouver, Canada, a worldwide center of spiritual formation.

St. Paul writes to the Christians living in Corinth that there is "one Lord, one faith, [and] one baptism" (Eph 4:5). What St. Paul is saying is that, since our one Lord (Jesus Christ) instituted only one Church (cf. Matt 16:18-19), that one Church holds only one faith (i.e., has distinct set of beliefs.) If one browses through his hometown phone book, one will likely discover scores ofdifferent Christian denominations, most with their pastors holding doctoral degrees in Scripture claiming to be "led by the Holy Spirit" in their "plain, straightforward interpretation the bible.." The teachings of these various Christian denominations vary widely on many crucial issues of doctrine (cf. the Introduction section of this book.) Since every Christian should desire to follow Jesus Christ as intimately as possible, he should long to hold fast to the one faith that was taught by Jesus and the Apostles and to belong to the one Church that was historically instituted by our Lord Himself. The question t every thinking Christian must eventually ask is: "Which one of the thousands of differently-Spirit-guided,' 'Bible-based' Christian Churches in existence today (which run the theological and doctrinal gamut) is the one historically established by Jesus Christ Himself?" Since contradictory teachings cannot simultaneously be true, which Christian Church has the of the Truth proclaimed by Jesus and the Apostles? This book is an attempt by Fr. Romero are some of the Scriptural and historical "evidence" that the contemporary Roman Catholic Church and the Apostolic Church founded by Jesus Christ circa 30 A.D. is one and the same. Using some of the commonly-heard misconceptions about the Catholic faith as points of departure, Fr. Romero examines various key passages from Scripture, looks at historical documention found in secular sources and; at the end of each chapter, presents quotes from the first generations of Christians to sh [via]
