Excerpt: ... grace of God) he was become a preacher of' the gofpel, now the Jews hate him, and sought to kill him, verse 21. He was once against Christ, and then manywere for him; but now that he was for Christ, all were against him; his being an enemy to Jesus, made others his friends; but when he came to own Jesus, then they became his enemies. And this was the great charge they had against him, that of a great opposer, he wasbecome a great prosessor. Because God had changed him, therefore this enraged them; as if they would be the worse because God had made him better. God had wrought on him by grace, and they seem to envy him the grace of God. "Hie vir invider mihi gratkm Christi." He preached no treason, nor sowed no sedition, only he preached repentance and faith in. Christ and the resurrection; and for this he was called into question. This is the Breviat and sum of Paul's desence and plea for himself, which you sind in the sequel of the chapter, had a different efsect upon his judges. Festus seems to censure him, verse 24. Agrippa seems to be convinced by him, verse 28. The whole bench seems to acquit him verse 30, 31. Festus he thinks-Paul was beside himself. Agrippa he is almost persuaded to mhe such an one as himself. Festus thinks him mad because he did not understand the doc trine of Christ and the resurrection. "Much learning hath made thee mad. Paul pleads so effectually for his religion, that Agrippa seems to be upoh the turning point to his prosession. "Pu'tar heminem effe sas naticum," Mar. in loc. The Holy War appeared in 1682. Although The Pilgrim's Progress has always been the most popular of Bunyan's numerous works, The Holy War holds a firm second place in the hearts of Christians throughout the world.
The story recalls the fall and redemption of mankind under the guise of a beseiged city. The city of Mansoul originally belonged by right to Shaddai or God, but was betrayed through Ear Gate and Eye Gate into the hands of Diabolus or the Devil, a besieging giant who takes control. In the hands of the enemy, Mansoul loses its Major, Lord Understanding, and Mr. Conscience is dismissed from his post of Recorder. Lord Will-be-Will becomes the Lord of Mansoul--man's fallen will, selfwill, and ill-will all combined in one unpleasant and anti-God character.
Mansoul is recaptured by Emmanuel's army and Diabolus is driven out. There is triumph over sin and evil-one of the Bible's most comforting themes.
The Bunyan characters in The Holy War are fascinating: Mr. Prejudice, Captain Anything, Ill-pause, Captain Self-denial, Lord Understanding, Miss Humblemind, Master Thinwell, and many others. [via]

Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) is one of the most important and innovative figures of the European Middle Ages. Writing his Comedy (the epithet 'Divine' was added by later admirers) in exile from his native Florence, he aimed to address a world gone astray both morally and politically. At the same time, he sought to push back the restrictive rules which traditionally governed writing in the Italian vernacular, to produce a radically new and all-encompassing work. The Comedy tells the story of the journey of a character who is at one and the same time both Dante himself and Everyman. In The Inferno, Dante's protagonist - and his reader - is presented with a graphic vision of the dreadful consequences of sin, and encounters an all-too-human array of noble, grotesque, beguiling, ridiculous and horrific characters. "Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions?" Shylock's impassioned plea in the middle of The Merchant of Venice is one of its most dramatic moments. After the Holocaust, the play has become a battleground for those who argue that the play represents Shakespeare's ultimate statement against ignorance and anti-Semitism in favour of a liberal vision of tolerance and multiculturalism. Other critics have pointed out that the play is, after all, a comedy that ultimately pokes fun at a 16th-century Jew. In fact, the bare outline of the plot suggests that the play is far more complex than either of these characterisations. Bassanio, a feckless young Venetian, asks his wealthy friend, the merchant Antonio, for money to finance a trip to woo the beautiful Portia in Belmont. Reluctant to refuse his friend (to whom he professes intense love), Antonio borrows the money from the Jewish moneylender. If he reneges on the deal, Shylock jokingly demands a pound of his flesh. When all Antonio's ships are lost at sea, Shylock calls in his debt, and the love and laughter of the first scenes of the play threaten to give way to death and tragedy. The final climactic courtroom scene, complete with a cross-dressed Portia, a knife-wielding Shylock, and the debate on "the quality of mercy" is one of the great dramatic moments in Shakespeare. The controversial subject matter of the play ensures that it continues to repel, divide but also fascinate its many audiences. --Jerry Brotton [via]

'A grain in the balance will determine which individual shall live and which shall die...'. Darwin's theory of natural selection issued a profound challenge to orthodox thought and belief: no being or species has been specifically created; all are locked into a pitiless struggle for existence, with extinction looming for those not fitted for the task. Yet 'The Origin of the Species' (1859) is also a humane and inspirational vision of ecological interrelatedness, revealing the complex mutual interdependencies between animal and plant life, climate and physical environment, and - by implication - within the human world. Written for the general reader, in a style which combines the rigour of science with the subtlety of literature, 'The Origin of the Species' remains one of the founding documents of the modern age. What are the distinguishing qualifications of those that are in favor with God, and entitled to his eternal rewards? . . . What is the nature of true religion? And wherein do lie the distinguishing notes of that virtue and holiness that is acceptable in the sight of God? These questions and others are addressed in Jonathan Edwards masterpiece, The Religious Affections. To Edwards, these were the most important questions man has to answer. Edwards was the most prominent preacher of Americas first Great Awakening. He witnessed true revival at his church in Northampton, Massachusetts. However, Edwards cautioned against the opposing dangers of rampant emotionalism and elitist intellectualism. He was concerned to define the nature of true religion and to distinguish between true and false revival. The result was this classic work, which will long remain one of the most penetrating and soul-searching volumes in the history of the Christian church. [via]

Vanity Fair: A Novel Without a Hero is an unparalleled satire of 19th Century British Society, written by William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) and originally published in serial format from 1847 to 1848.
Meet the charming and cunning Becky Sharp, insinuating upward through the social ranks with the fervor of Napoleon plowing through Europe, and the subtlety of a butterfly.
More so than any other picaresque character, Becky Sharp's name has become synonymous with a gold-digging, amoral, opportunistic social charmer who is also shrewd and strong-a portrait of a complex woman of her time.
She is the anti-heroine you love to hate, and yet at the same time cannot help but secretly admire her methods. [via]
