Ancient Greek culture, which reached its peak in Athens in the 5th century B.C., produced some of the most glorious and fascinating relics of Western civilization. This terrific Eyewitness Book traces ancient Greek achievements from the Bronze Age through the Hellenistic period using evidence found by archaeologists. Greek myths are introduced by way of statues, carvings, and illustrations. Like all the books of this series, Ancient Greece is incredibly rich in vivid, colorful photographs, which bring the subject to life. Kids and adults can learn about power and politics in Athens, the legendary Herakles (not quite like the Disney version), temples, and home life. Archaeological evidence shows what life was like for women and children of ancient Greece, what people did for fun, and what their standards of beauty and accomplishment were. It's easy to see how influential this ancient culture has been on modern life, from science and medicine to the Olympic games. Extremely informative, intriguing, and entertaining. [via]

Unearth and explore the fascinating worlds of our ancestors from the earliest human to the Industrial Age.
From the discovery of a Bronze Age ritual monument to the reconstruction of a classic Roman villa and the piecing together of a New World settlement, this highly illustrated atlas is a compelling guide to both recent and historic archaeological sites around the world. Mick Aston and Tim Taylor inspire us with their enthusiasm for archaeology to look at the evidence of the past all around us. Unearthing a range of sites from early cities to medieval castles and Industrial Age factories, they reveal the activities that took place and make detailed identifications of key objects found there. The Atlas of Archaeology is sumptuously illustrated with photographs of the artifacts found at each site, followed by a detailed full-color drawing of the site as it would have appeared originally. Photographs of archaeologists at work and explanations of their techniques provide the technical information that is the basis of all archaeological digs. Fourteen full-color maps show more than 1,200 sites around the world, and accompanying profiles give the location of each, the date of discovery, and the key finds. Lavishly illustrated and expertly researched, this fascinating guide to the world of archaeology will encourage all those interested in the past to take a completely fresh and informed look at their surroundings. Dwight Hopkins, whose important work in Black Theology has mediated class theological concerns through the prism of African American culture, here offers a fresh take on theological anthropology. Rather than defined "the human" as one eternal or inviolable essence, however, Hopkins looks to the multiple and conflicting notions of the human in contemporary thought, and particularly three key variables: culture, self, and race. Hopkins' critical reframing of these concepts firmly locates human endeavor, development, transcendence, and liberation in the particular messiness of struggle and strife. [via]

While current fashion is fusing diverse cultural styles, National Geographic author Cathy Newman provides a fascinating global perspective on the historical and cultural significance of clothing and adornment. This timely--and timeless--subject is explored in evocative essays and lavish illustrations that offer a fresh perspective for today' s style-obsessed culture.
Featuring lively, anecdotal interviews from contemporary designers, fashion editors, historians, and cultural anthropologists, "Fashion offers a dynamic approach to this sumptuous topic from industry insiders. Newman, focusing on the body adorned, infuses her narrative with a sense of appreciation for the decadence and innovation that surrounds the notion of style. "Jane Eyre," Charlotte Brontë's most beloved novel, describes the passionate love between the courageous orphan Jane Eyre and the brilliant, brooding, and domineering Rochester. The loneliness and cruelty of Jane Eyre's childhood strengthens her natural independence and spirit, which prove invaluable when she takes a position as a governess at Thornfield Hall. But after she falls in love with her sardonic employer, her discovery of his terrible secret forces her to make a heart-wrenching choice. Ever since its publication in 1847, "Jane Eyre" has enthralled every kind of reader, from the most critical and cultivated to the youngest and most unabashedly romantic. "Jane Eyre" lives as one of the great triumphs of storytelling and as a moving and unforgettable portrayal of a woman's quest for self-respect. "At the end we are steeped through and through with the genius, the vehemence, the indignation of Charlotte Brontë." -Virginia Woolf [via]

The recovery of the history of the ancient Near East through archaeology is one of the major achievements of the modern age. Although the impact of this new knowledge on biblical matters is briefly surveyed, the main concern of this book is with the methods that archaeologists use in going about their work. Lance discusses the principles of excavation and how materials recovered are brought to bear on biblical studies. The book explains in detail the principles of stratigraphy and typology, suggests practical ways for the beginner to find needed information in the confusing array of primary and secondary publications, and takes a brief look at the future of biblical archaeology as a discipline. Expert at documenting the peoples of the world, National Geographic has drawn together a notable international team of anthropologists to compile this first-of-its-kind, illustrated volume of the traditions and ways of life of ethnic groups around the globe. Now, as never before, cultures are faced with extinction as globalization overtakes them. But Peoples of the World offers compelling essays and stunning photographs that capture the astounding array of cultures still surviving on Earth and shows how the people in these cultures define themselves and their worlds through their customs, religions, livelihoods, even their food, clothes, and shelter. The book will feature chapters on eight world regions: North and South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Oceania, and the Arctic. Each region will begin with an insightful general essay on the cultural mix of the region as a whole and will be followed by smaller essays on individual ethnic groups within the region. Several topical essays by well-known anthropologists will also cover ethnicity and its impact on history and people's lives; immigration and how it reinvents ethnic identities, and cultural survival of marginal ethnic groups now threatened with extinction. Extensive, specially commissioned maps will show the topography of small areas of the world and how the lay of the land has impacted cultures. A comprehensive list of the hundreds of ethnic groups in the world and where they are found will be part of the front matter. [via]

In this volume, Robert R. Wilson faces a current methodological question: How, and in what ways, can the social sciences aid Old Testament research? Wilson offers an overview of the history and role of sociology in Old Testament interpretation, followed by an evaluation of its uses and a discussion of the methodological problems involved in such inter-disciplinary studies. He then demonstrates some of the ways in which sociology can work with other approaches, contributing to the disciplines of exegesis and history. [via]

Women in Transition addresses the historical, social, economic and political dynamics affecting the lives of women during Lithuania's transition from communism to democracy. This book demonstrates that democracy has not diminished gender discrimination. In fact, the recent political and economic changes threaten to widen the gender gap through a decline in political representation, an increase in women's unemployment and underemployment, and the threat of restrictive reproductive policies. Furthermore, low birth rates coupled with a sharp rise in nationalism has led to propaganda encouraging women to return to home and family. Women in Transition details how women are responding to these changes. The first and only book published about Lithuanian women by Lithuanian women, this unique volume fills a gap in knowledge of the country's society and the role of its women. An important contribution to the growing body of literature on post-communism, the book is written by many of the leading women scholars in Lithuania including the head of the Women's Studies program and the Chair of the Sociology Department at Vilnius University; the Counsellor to the Parliament on Women's Issues; the Dean of Kaunas University; and the Chairperson of the Women's Party of Lithuania. Suzanne LaFont, former Visiting Professor at Kaunas University, has edited the book and provided an introduction. [via]
