"Fuzzy Logic" by Erin McCarthy: Ashley Andrews has taken "shop till you drop" a little too much to heart, and finds herself facing a massive credit card bill. It seems like the perfect solution to get a part-time job as a Pleasure Party consultant, showing romance-enhancing toys and products to women. Lucas Manning is Ashley's next-door neighbour and her younger brother's best friend. When he accidentally opens a box outside his door addressed to Ashley, he's a little startled to find an entire selection of neon coloured vibrators. By the end of the night, Ashley and Lucas have taken quality assurance to new levels, and Ashley sees the benefit in a man who is full of smart and sexy ideas. "The Cupid Curse" by Jen Nicholas: Val EnTine is a woman cursed. As if it wasn't bad enough that her parents named her after the holiday she was born on, fate made up for it by giving her a non-existent love life. Val decides to throw caution to the wind and call on Cupid for help. So after doing a little research, writing a heartfelt plea to the God of Love for assistance, and waiting around for a bolt of lightning to jump- start her floundering single state, in walks Gldeon. He has the face of an angel, the hands of a piano-playing Beethoven, and the gorgeous brown eyes of melt - in-your-mouth dark chocolate. Unable to stop their growing emotions for each other, Val and Gldeon set off on an adventure that neither of them had planned. This is one couple who learn that life isn't always easy, that love doesn't always make sense, and that sometimes a curse is really a blessing in disguise. "Mesmerized" by Jordan Summers: Amanda Dillon is used to gorgeous men falling at her feet, wooing her, obeying her every command. Of course, it helps that they're hypnotized at the time. Derek Armstrong knows a juicy story when he sees it. And Amanda Dillon is it. He's not going to let the fact that she doesn't grant interviews stand in his way. So what's a star journalist to do? Why, allow her to hypnotize him, of course. A simple plan that should work like a charm, if only he can avoid falling under her hypnotic spell. When the truth is revealed and the spell is broken, will the connection remain? [via]

Edgar Allan Poe: Selected Poems and Tales/Deluxe -- FROM THE PUBLISHER: For more than a century-and-a-half, Edgar Allan Poe's poems and tales have thrilled readers with chilling accounts of matters mysterious and macabre. Their somber poetry and rich moods of menace and melancholy have conjured some of the most haunting images in American literature: the accusing echo of the tell-tale heart, the beloved but doomed Annabel Lee, the gloom-shrouded House of Usher, the maddening tortures of the pit and pendulum, the eerie and enigmatic Raven. Dramatic and irreversible, Poe's work invites us to match our darkest imaginings to his vision of the world colored by grief and madness and haunted by specters of guilt and death. This illustrated edition captures Poe's best-known works in all their shadowy splendor through the incomparable art of Mark Summers. His striking full-page color illustrations and ghostly black-and-white pencil sketches reveal the skull beneath the skin of Poe's obsessed and mournful characters and subtly express their heart of emotional darkness that gives them life and purpose. The book also features and introduction by best-selling fantasist and graphic novelist Neil Gaiman, who discusses his personal relationship with Poe's writing and its enduring impact. "Poe", he writes, "for all his short life and unfulfilled potential, remains as much read today, his finest stories as successful, as readable, as contemporary as anyone can desire." This new edition of Poe's unforgettable writing is a colorful and imaginative tribute to this most contemporary of classic writers. [via]

Cathal MacNachton and Connall MacAdie are cousins bound by far more than blood ties and the rugged Highland landscape their clan calls home. The ancient curse of their ancestry has fated them to live by night with an unquenchable thirst that neither can tame. The only thing that can save their souls is marriage to Outsiders - mortals whose untainted blood will weaken the curse in their children, and break the chains of fear that have made their clan a breed apart. Bridget Callan and Eva Caxton are the women who will shape the clan's destiny. Marriage to these strange and mysterious men rescues each of them from desperate circumstances - and draws them into a web of danger, desire, and intrigue they never could have imagined. But Eva and Bridget refuse to be pawns in the battle that erupts as the future of the cursed clan hangs in the balance - a war that must be fought after the sun sets over the deep, still lochs. Whatever the outcome, they'll stand strong by their brooding warrior lairds, willing and able to fulfil their desires - and face down their enemies... [via]

Berlie Doherty, author of many books for young people, including Carnegie Medal-winner Dear Nobody, says fairy tales "are enchanted dreams. We remember them as if they had been sung to us while we were under the spell of a long deep sleep." And according to acclaimed picture-book illustrator Jane Ray, "fairy tales are the earth beneath our feet, giving us roots and helping us find our place in the world, but they also offer a glimpse of the magical and the enchanted." With two such eloquently mystical creators at the helm, any collection of fairy tales is bound to be magical. Sure enough, this team's magnificent Fairy Tales glimmers and shines, giving new life to traditional favorites such as "Beauty and the Beast," "Cinderella," "Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp," and "Hansel and Gretel." Doherty's retellings are respectful of the originals, while incorporating her own strong, vibrant voice. Ray's watercolor, ink, and collage illustrations, surrounding the gold-framed text, are truly stunning, in exotic colors and exquisite tapestry-style patterns. Characters seem to come from all parts of the world--appropriately enough, since the stories have "echoes in many different cultures." The Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Charles Perrault would be proud. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter [via]

"This country and this people seem to have been made for each other, and it appears as if it was the design of Providence, that an inheritance so proper and convenient for a band of brethren ... should never be split into a number of unsocial, jealous, and alien sovereignties." So wrote John Jay, one of the revolutionary authors of The Federalist Papers, arguing that if the United States was truly to be a single nation, its leaders would have to agree on universally binding rules of governance--in short, a constitution. In a brilliant set of essays, Jay and his colleagues Alexander Hamilton and James Madison explored in minute detail the implications of establishing a kind of rule that would engage as many citizens as possible and that would include a system of checks and balances. Their arguments proved successful in the end, and The Federalist Papers stand as key documents in the founding of the United States. [via]

Following in the footsteps of the late great Lester Bangs -- the most revered and irreverent of rock 'n' roll critics -- twenty-four celebrated writers have penned stories inspired by great songs. Just as Bangs cast new light on a Rod Stewart classic with his story "Maggie May," about a wholly unexpected connection between an impressionable young man and an aging, alcoholic hooker, the diverse, electrifying stories here use songs as a springboard for a form dubbed the lit riff.
Alongside Bangs's classic work, you'll find stories by J.T. LeRoy, who puts a recovering teenage drug abuser in a dentist's chair with nothing but the Foo Fighters's "Everlong" -- blaring through the P.A. -- to fight the pain; Jonathan Lethem, whose narrator looks back on his lost innocence just as an extramarital affair careens to an end -- this to the tune "Speeding Motorcycle" as recorded by Yo La Tengo; and Jennifer Belle, who envisions a prequel to Paul Simon's "Graceland" -- one that takes place at a children's birthday party replete with a real live kangaroo.
With original contributions from Tom Perrotta, Nelson George, Amanda Davis, Lisa Tucker, Aimee Bender, Darin Strauss, and many more -- riffing on everyone from Tom Waits and Bruce Springsteen to the White Stripes, Cat Power, and Bob Marley -- this is both an astounding collection of short stories and an extraordinary experiment in words and music.

This story of a double-life in which the protagonist by day worked as a respectable doctor and by night roamed the back alleys of old-town London, was first published as a 'shilling shocker' in 1886 and became an instant classic. In the first six months of publication 40,000 copies were sold, and it remains one of the best tales ever written about the divided self. The story opens with Mr Utterson the lawyer learning of an inexplicable attack on a young girl by a certain Mr Hyde, who he knows to be a protege of his old friend Henry Jekyll. Deciding to discover more about the matter, he questions those who might know something and finally manages to speak to Hyde himself. Though it sounds like the beginning of a detective story, the reader is already aware that things are deeper than they might appear: those who meet Hyde feel an irrational hatred and are unable to describe him in any detail. And the language of the text itself seems to be hiding something: vague, ambiguous, at times opaque and full of repetitions. Something is going on here, but we're not sure what it is.In the end, after Hyde has committed a murder, a distressed Jekyll locks himself in his study; but when Utterson breaks down the door, he finds not Jekyll but the dead body of Hyde. He also discovers a document which, along with another already acquired from the last two chapters, explains many things -- but not all. This new edition contains a substantial introduction, with the story of composition (amid difficulties), first publication and early reception, followed by a survey of the main critical interpretations of this much-discussed work, a brief study of its language, and an overview of the most important derivative works: stage plays, films, comic books, graphic novels, and retellings of various kinds. Key Features: / The most complete, scholarly edition of Jekyll and Hyde -- with full introduction, notes, etc. / The story of the composition and publication reveals new details -- of interest to RLS biographers / Summarises the many various critical approaches to Jekyll and Hyde / Explanatory notes cover archaic and Scots words, the origins and meanings of characters' names, and comment on cultural and literary allusions [via]

Wherever there is a need to fix a malfunction or rescue a damaged ship, the Federation calls in the crack team from Starfleet S.C.E. From finding a Starfleet vessel lost inside a holographic ship, to checking out new technology captured during the Dominion War, no task is too bizarre or too dangerous for Captain David Gold, Commander Sonya Gomez and their crew of S.C.E. troubleshooters on board the USS da Vinci. However their mission to Galvan VI could prove their greatest challenge yet. Not only must they salvage the USS Orion from the turbulent atmosphere of a gas giant, but the Orion is carrying the prototype of the deadly Wildfire device, a protomatter warhead that can ignite gas giants into stars. And to complicate matters still further they encounter an unknown alien life-form that may have lured the USS Orion to its destruction... [via]
