The Awakening shocked turn-of-the-century readers and reviewers with its treatment of sex and suicide. In a departure from literary convention, Kate Chopin failed to condemn her heroine's desire for an affair with the son of a Louisiana resort owner, whom she meets on vacation. The power of sensuality, the delusion of ecstatic love, and the solitude that accompanies the trappings of middle- and upper-class convention are themes of this now-classic novel.
The book was influenced by French writers ranging from Flaubert to Maupassant, and can be seen as a precursor of the impressionistic, mood-driven novels of Virginia Woolf and Djuna Barnes. Variously called "vulgar," "unhealthily introspective," and "morbid," the book was neglected for several decades, not least because it was written by a "regional" woman writer. This edition also includes selected stories from Kate Chopin's Bayou Folk and A Night in Acadie, and an introduction and notes by Nina Baym. [via]

Building on the strengths of two previous editions, this revised and enlarged Third Edition continues to offer more of Spenser's poetry than any other comparable volume. All selections are based on early and established texts, fully glossed and precisely annotated, with an Editor's Note following each section.
To facilitate discussion of the place of the body and of pastoral elements in Spenser's epic, the Third Edition includes more of The Faerie Queene: from Book II, canto ix (the House of Alma), and from Book VI, the remainder of canto x and all of cantos xi-xii. The Shepheardes Calender is represented by six eclogues, including the much-discussed "Februarie." Colin Clouts Come Home Againe, increasingly a focus of critical attention, is an important addition, and Amoretti is offered in its entirety.More editions of Edmund Spenser's Poetry:

The text is unabridged, with original spelling and extensive, easy-to-use marginal glosses and footnotes.
No other edition accurately represents the actual (and likely authorial) divisions of the text as attested to by its two surviving witnessesCaxtons 1485 print and, especially, the famous Winchester Manuscript. The Winchester Manuscript is now generally agreed to be the more authentic of the two earlier texts. The Norton Critical Edition is the first edition of Malory to recover important elements of this manuscript: paragraphing marginal annotations hierarchies of narrative division as signaled by size and decorative intricacy of initial capitals and font changes The Norton Critical Edition also represents, in black-letter font, the striking rubrication of proper names in the Winchester Manuscript, reconstructing for readers something of an authentic medieval reading experience, one which gives visual support to Malorys extraordinary representation, in character and setting, of a chivalric ideal. No other student edition of Malory contains such extensive contextual and critical support. [via]More editions of Le Morte D'Arthur:

This Norton Critical Edition reprints the complete texts of twelve plays by eight major Irish playwrights: Cathleen Ni Houlihan, On Baile's Strand, and Purgatory by W. B. Yeats; Spreading the News and The Rising of the Moon by Lady Gregory; Riders to the Sea and Playboy of the Western World by J. M. Synge; John Bull's Other Island by George Bernard Shaw; Juno and the Paycock by Sean O'Casey; The Quare Fellow by Brendan Behan; Krapps Last Tape by Samuel Beckett; and Translations by Brian Friel.

From its collection of documents relevant to the origin of the Irish Literary Revival in the midst of Ireland's republican revolution to the recent formation of the Field Day Company in Northern Ireland, Modern Irish Drama charts the rise and development of one of the most powerful national dramas of the twentieth century. A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are also included. [via]More editions of Modern Irish Drama:

"From the inception of The Norton Anthology of American Literature, three goals have been paramount: first, to present a variety of works rich and substantial enough to enable teachers to build their own courses according to their own ideals; second, to make the anthology self-sufficient by featuring many works in their entirety and longer selections so that individual authors can be covered in depth; and third, to balance traditional interests with developing critical concerns."Nina Baym, General Editor, from the Preface
Now in its Sixth Edition, The Norton Anthology of American Literature remains the enduring market leader. The new Shorter Sixth Edition shares with its parent volumes the commitment to broadening the canon while maintaining a representative balance of American literature.
Thoroughly revised and tailored especially to the one-semester course, the Shorter Sixth Edition builds on the classroom strengths of flexibility, depth, and balance in a strong revision. [via]

One of the literary masterpieces of the century, this translation is now presented with facing-page German.
To Rilke himself the Sonnets to Orpheus were "perhaps the most mysterious in the way they came up and entrusted themselves to me, the most enigmatic dictation I have ever held through and achieved; the whole first part was written down in a single breathless act of obedience, between the 2nd and 5th of February, without one word being doubtful or having to be changed."
