It is always instructive to read American's premier dissident thinker if only simply to get an alternative take on what constitutes our present day "common sense"--an urgent project he undertakes in 9-11. Chomsky, whose recent hugely prolific political output has made him something of an icon of the American left, began his career as a ground-breaking theoretical linguist. And it is his attention to detail and language which continue to make him such a useful guide through the murky world of power politics and particularly to US Foreign Policy in the Middle East. In grappling with 9-11, a date which has become a noun whose very definition has been consciously moulded by the media and the American establishment, Chomsky is taking on one of the biggest challenges of our time. But this is a very slight book in which to do this. A collection of interviews conducted in the month following the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center Chomsky is here keen to stress the urgency of a response to 9-11 that is not simply reactionary warfaring. It behoves us to discover why 9-11 really happened. In the words of the title of another very useful book: Why Do People Hate America?. In such a small, and sometimes rather repetitive, volume Chomsky can only really encourage us to ask better questions and to seek more carefully and widely for better answers. But if questions are beginning to form then readers could do worse than look to this useful and provocative book. --Mark Thwaite [via]

What constitutes the behavior that gets a nation labeled a "rogue state"? If, Noam Chomsky suggests, we consider a state to be acting in an "outlaw" fashion when it refuses to heed the articles and resolutions of the United Nations, then the United States is as much a "rogue state" as Saddam Hussein's Iraq--if not more. Chomsky presents a brief outline of America's attempts--once the cold war was over--to reconstruct Iraq as an enemy after years of turning a blind eye to Saddam's activities and even supplying him with aid. He also considers how the broader "war" on terrorism fits into this post-cold-war strategy. Noted commentator on Middle Eastern affairs Edward Said supplements Chomsky's argument with a consideration of the severity of U.S. sanctions against Iraq and what he views as a growing disregard for the interests of other Arab nations in the region. And Ramsey Clark offers a brief coda on the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; Chomsky himself delivers a more elaborate consideration of this theme in another book in the Open Media series, The Umbrella of U.S. Power. --Ron Hogan [via]

Since the late 1780s historians and jurists have questioned what was uppermost in the minds of the framers of the United States Constitution. In surveying the thirteen states' experiences as colonies and under the Articles of Confederation, one is struck more by their great diversity than by their commonalities. In this groundbreaking historical work, Christopher Collier brings to the fore an interpretation virtually neglected since the mid-nineteenth century: the view from the states, in which the creation and ratification of the new Constitution reflected a unique combination of internal and external needs. All Politics Is Local closely analyzes exactly what Connecticut constituents expected their representatives to achieve in Philadelphia and suggests that other states' citizens also demanded their own special returns. Collier avoids popular theory in his convincing argument that any serious modern effort to understand the Constitution as conceived by its framers must pay close attention to the state-specific needs and desires of the era.
Challenging all previous interpretations, Collier demonstrates that Connecticut's forty antifederalist representatives were motivated not by economic, geographic, intellectual, or ideological factors, but by family and militia connections, local politics, and other considerations that had nothing at all to do with the Constitution. He finds no overarching truth, no common ideological thread binding the antifederalists together, which leads him to call for the same state-centered micro-study for the other twelve founding states. To do less leaves historical and contemporary interpretations of the U.S. Constitution not simply blurred around the edges but incomplete at the core as well.
Collier delights and surprises readers in proving--with his trademark impeccable historical scholarship, firm grasp of known sources, and ample new material--that in the case of Connecticut, a stalwart defender of the provincial prerogative, all politics is and was, to one degree or another, local. In And Their Children After Them, the writer/photographer team Dale Maharidge and Michael Williamson return to the land and families captured in James Agee and Walker Evanss inimitable Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, extending the project of conscience and chronicling the traumatic decline of King Cotton. With this continuation of Agee and Evanss project, Maharidge and Williamson not only uncover some surprising historical secrets relating to the families and to Agee himself, but also effectively lay to rest Agees fear that his work, from lack of reverence or resilience, would be but another offense to the humanity of its subjects. Williamsons ninety-part photo essay includes updates alongside Evanss classic originals. Maharidge and Williamsons work in And Their Children After Them was honored with the Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction when it was first published in 1990. [via]

In 1647 the Reverend John Woodbridge, her brother-in-law, sailed for England with a manuscript of Anne's poetry, unbeknownst to her. While there, he arranged to have the book published under the title of The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America.
When the book was presented to her after publication, Anne was thoroughly embarrassed but also pleased. Eventually she owned up to the volume as her rambling brat." Subsequent generations have valued her gifts as a poet, and her poetry remains in print to this day.
Beyond Stateliest Marble is a look at the personal qualities of Anne Bradstreet, the vibrant poetry she created, and her contributions to the way of life of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Even to those who know something of her, Anne Bradstreet remains an enigmatic figure. For one thing, there is no surviving portrait of her. To the modern mind she seems an odd combination -- a dedicated Puritan and a gifted poet.

The thrilling story of friends Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos in the Spanish Civil War, an ideological adventure that brought their friendship - and their literary rivalry - to the breaking point The Spanish Civil War was a flashpoint for many artists of the era, and the political left's romance with its cause led many creative luminaries to Spain. Perhaps the most notable of these was Ernest Hemingway. Another important writer to make the trip was John Dos Passos, widely regarded at the time as the literary voice of America's new socially engaged generation. Dos Passos and Hemingway had long been companions, and it is likely that mild-mannered "Dos" was oblivious to Hemingway's obsessive resentment of him. Regardless, the two men arrived in Spain as comrades of a sort. In The Breaking Point, Stephen Koch reveals that both Hemingway and Dos were in Spain as part of a group sponsored by Stalin's propaganda ministry. Shortly after their arrival, Dos's close friend Jose Robles Pazo was killed as a purported fascist spy. Dos could never accept Robles's guilt, putting him at odds with Hemingway and placing his politics (and literary reputation) into question. Dos's career never fully recovered. Both a biographical portrait and history-in-miniature, The Breaking Point explores the time the two men shared in Spain, and how it affected each man, his work, and American literature as a whole. In 1979, the authors of The Changing American Voter, the prize-winning book on electoral behavior, brought their study up-to-date with an analysis of the 1976 presidential election. By carefully analyzing national voting patterns, they give substantial meaning to statistics and figures. Professors Nie, Verba, and Petrocki show how the role of issues in 1976 voting seemed to be influenced by the political context of the campaign. In this respect the 1976 elections represented a reprise of earlier contests such as 1960. In other ways, such as the erosion of partisanship, 1976 resembled more recent elections. The authors use the 1976 election to test out their earlier analysis of the electorate. The American voter is not a new voter, this book shows, but a malleable one. The vote in 1976 illustrates the variable nature of mass behavior and attitudes. [via]

The years between 1929 and 1945 were some of the most fateful and decisive in the history of the United States. America set a host of precedents, establishing patterns that were followed for four decades. Two major issues provided the main challenges of the era: domestic depression and foreign war. This volume helps readers understand the lasting impact of the Great Depression and World War II on the American people and to recognize that these two events irrevocably altered the political, economic, social, and cultural life of the nation and its people. The Communist Party was the only political movement on the left in the late 1920s and 1930s to place racial justice and equality at the top of its agenda and to seek, and ultimately win, sympathy among African Americans. This historic effort to fuse red and black offers a rich vein of experience and constitutes the theme of The Cry Was Unity.
Utilizing for the first time materials related to African Americans from the Moscow archives of the Communist Inter-national (Comintern), The Cry Was Unity traces the trajectory of the black-red relationship from the end of World War I to the tumultuous 1930s. From the just-recovered transcript of the pivotal debate on African Americans at the 6th Comintern Congress in 1928, the book assesses the impact of the Congress's declaration that blacks in the rural South constituted a nation within a nation, entitled to the right of self-determination. Despite the theory's serious flaws, it fused the black struggle for freedom and revolutionary content and demanded that white labor recognize blacks as indispensable allies.
As the Great Depression unfolded, the Communists launched intensive campaigns against lynching, evictions, and discrimination in jobs and relief and opened within their own ranks a searing assault on racism. While the Party was never able to win a majority of white workers to the struggle for Negro rights, or to achieve the unqualified support of the black majority, it helped to lay the foundations for the freedom struggle of the 1950s and 1960s.
The Cry Was Unity underscores the successes and failures of the Communist-led left and the ways in which it fought against racism and inequality. This struggle comprises an important missing page that needs to be returned to the nation's history.
Mark Solomon, an emeritus professor at Simmons College, is the author of Red and Black: Communism and Afro-Americans, 1929-1935, Death Waltz to Armageddon: E. P. Thompson and the Peace Movement, and Stopping World War II (with Michael Myerson). [via]

We all know George Washington the fearless leader, the brilliant general, our first president, and "The Father of Our Country". What we often overlook is Washington's deep spirituality.
Now, in Faith of Our Founding Father: The Spiritual Journey of George Washington, best-selling author Janice T. Connell gives an in-depth examination of Washington's spiritual life. Drawing upon Washington's personal writings, public speeches, eyewitness accounts and letters, Connell reveals the practical, down-to-earth faith that guided him throughout his life. From narrow escapes on the battlefield to braving cold and starvation, Washington often credited his life to "the all powerful dispensations of Providence".
In a world wracked by wars, terrorism, disease, starvation, immorality, and tyranny, the life of George Washington has a lot to teach us. The father of our country faced countless challenges throughout his life, not only on the road to establishing our nation, but also in his childhood, scarred by the early death of his father. It was George Washington's deep personal faith that allowed him to triumph over life's adversities, and it steeled him with the profound inner strength that carried him from the dark days of Valley Forge to the pinnacle of the Presidency.
This spiritual biography includes the entire text of the Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation, a text Washington learned by heart as a boy and that continued to guide his values throughout his life. In addition, it includes Washington's daily prayers. His prayer book, with a distinct prayer for the morning and afternoon of each day of the week, gave him comfort and strength all through his years.
George Washington was no stranger to sorrow, cold, hunger, persecution, violence, or terrorism. His deep sense of spirituality allowed him to stand strong in the face of adversity and triumph in the darkest of times. His story can bring similar strength and comfort to us all. [via]

In his essay The End for Which God Created the World, the great theologian Jonathan Edwards proclaimed that God's ultimate end is the manifestation of his glory in the highest happiness of his creatures.
Pastor John Piper has devoted his years of ministry to exploring the implications of this stunning truth for life and ministry. Understanding that God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him has made all the difference for John Piper-and can transform your life as well.
Here Piper passionately demonstrates the relevance of Edwards's ideals for the personal and public lives of Christians today through his own book-length introduction to Edwards's The End for Which God Created the World. This book also contains the complete essay supplemented by almost a hundred of Piper's insightful explanatory notes. Those who remember Jonathan Edwards (1703--1758) only for his sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" overlook his many and varied contributions to American church history. A man of powerful intellect, Edwards is credited with instigating America's first Great Awakening. Beginning in 1734, six sudden conversions in his parish turned into a flood of thirty per week, ultimately drawing people from up to a hundred miles away. In addition to preaching, Edwards also wrote several books, including Treatise on Religious Affections, served as a missionary to Native American tribes, and was briefly president of the College of New Jersey (later Princeton). In a pop media culture dominated by dismissive irony and cloying sentimentalism, how do we talk about a true American political hero? The answer is, we don't. After 40 years in the trenches, Ralph Nader, the standard-bearer in the battle for the rights of the disenfranchised and the consummate American citizen, is still being ignored by the mass media. Reading The Ralph Nader Reader may lead one to view that oversight as less than accidental.
Nader has tilted against injustice wherever he has found it, and he has found it in spades in corporate America. Beginning with his crusade against the auto industry in the early 1960s, Nader went on to fight for the rights of workers by helping create the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, as well as for a citizen's right for access to government documents in the creation of the Freedom of Information Act. He has often stood resolute before the juggernaut--and more often than not, the juggernaut has flinched. His investigation of corporate crime led him to see a far-reaching problem of accountability. Corporations are supposed to be accountable to the people and laws of America, but what happens when the government exempts corporations from these responsibilities? Nader gives one of many shocking examples: "Of America's 250 most profitable corporations in 1988, 45 reduced their tax liability to less than 10%, 6 received refunds." This and countless other examples of corporate-government malfeasance have led Nader to focus increasingly on reestablishing democracy in America. He advocates citizen groups at the local level to be watchdogs for their own interests--be it as voters, taxpayers, workers, consumers, or shareholders. "It is time for a civic rebellion, Jeffersonian style," he writes.
So is there an effort to keep Nader out of the media? When you realize, as Nader points out repeatedly, that one corporation owns 800 radio stations across the U.S., that a handful of corporations control the vast majority of television networks, and that The New York Times owns The Boston Globe, you see that he has ticked off the wrong people if he wants his voice to be heard in America. But his voice speaks clearly in this book, and gives us all an ideal of citizenship and democratic action to strive for. But beware The Ralph Nader Reader--once you take the red pill, you'll have to see how deep the rabbit hole goes, and once you see, you may find yourself doing something about it. --Steve Andersen [via]

Like many Christians, Philip Yancey has often felt kicked around, abused, and damaged by the institutional church. And like many Christians, he has found solace in reading about and getting to know some extraordinary individual believers. He profiles 13 of those believers in Soul Survivor: How My Faith Survived the Church. "I became a writer, I now believe, to sort out words used and misused by the church of my youth," Yancey writes in the book's first chapter. The church of his youth, which described itself as "New Testament, Blood-bought, Born-again, Premillennial, Dispensational, fundamental," Yancey now describes as a frightening place where racism and bigotry were regularly preached from the pulpit. After graduating from Bible college, Yancey became a writer and chose to direct his attention to "people I could learn from, people I might want to emulate," such as C. Everett Koop and Robert Coles. He also read widely and passionately--Leo Tolstoy, Martin Luther King Jr., G.K. Chesterton, and Annie Dillard, to name a few. Soul Survivor offers probing, honest profiles of 13 individuals who have "helped restore to me the mislaid treasures of God." For most readers, these profiles will serve as starting points to explore the lives and minds of the individuals who have inspired Yancey. --Michael Joseph Gross [via]
