Aristotle's much-translated On Poetics is the earliest and arguably the best treatment that we possess of tragedy as a literary form. The late Seth Benardete and Michael Davis have translated it anew with a view to rendering Aristotle's text into English as precisely as possible. A literal translation has long been needed, for in order to excavate the argument of On Poetics one has to attend not simply to what is said on the surface but also to the various puzzles, questions, and peculiarities that emerge only on the level of how Aristotle says what he says and thereby leads one to revise and deepen one's initial understanding of the intent of the argument. As On Poetics is about how tragedy ought to be composed, it should not be surprising that it turns out to be a rather artful piece of literature in its own right.
Benardete and Davis supplement their edition of On Poetics with extensive notes and appendices. They explain nuances of the original that elude translation, and they provide translations of passages found elsewhere in Aristotle's works as well as in those of other ancient authors that prove useful in thinking through the argument of On Poetics both in terms of its treatment of tragedy and in terms of its broader concerns. By following the connections Aristotle plots between On Poetics and his other works, readers will be in a position to appreciate the centrality of this work for his entire thought.
In an introduction that sketches the overall interpretation of On Poetics presented in hisThe Poetry of Philosophy (St. Augustine's Press, 1999; see p. 33 of this catalogue), Davis argues that, while On Poetics is certainly about tragedy, it has a further concern extending beyond poetry to the very structure of the human soul in its relation to what is, and that Aristotle reveals in the form of his argument the true character of human action. The Birth of Tragedy (1872) was Nietzsche's first book. Its youthful faults were exposed by Nietzsche in the brilliant "Attempt at a Self-Criticism" which he added to the new edition of 1886. But the book, whatever its excesses, remains one of the most relevant statements on tragedy ever penned. It exploded the conception of Greek culture that was prevalent down through the Victorian era, and it sounded themes developed in the twentieth century by classicists, existentialists, psychoanalysts, and others.

In THE CRITIQUE OF JUDGMENT (1790), Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) seeks to establish the a priori principles underlying the faculty of judgement, just as he did in his previous critiques of pure and practical reason. The first part deals with the subject of our aesthetic sensibility; we respond to certain natural phenomena as beautiful, says Kant, when we recognise in nature a harmonious order that satisfies the mind's own need for order. The second half of the critique concentrates on the apparent teleology in nature's design of organisms. No work of Spanish philosopher and essayist José Ortega y Gasset has been more frequently cited, admired, or criticized than his defense of modernism, "The Dehumanization of Art." In the essay, originally published in Spanish in 1925, Ortega grappled philosophically with the newness of nonrepresentational art and sought to make it more understandable to a public confused by it. Many embraced the essay as a manifesto extolling the virtues of vanguard artists and promoting their efforts to abandon the realism and the romanticism of the nineteenth century.
The "dehumanization" of the title, which was meant descriptively rather than pejoratively, referred most literally to the absence of human forms in nonrepresentational art, but also to its insistent unpopularity, its indifference to the past, and its iconoclasm. Ortega championed what he saw as a new cultural politics with the goal of a total transformation of society.
Ortega was an immensely gifted writer in the best belletristic tradition. His work has been compared to an iceberg because it hides the critical mass of its erudition beneath the surface, and because it is deceptive, appearing to be more spontaneous and informal than it really is.
Princeton published the first English translation of the essay paired with another entitled "Notes on the Novel." Three essays were later added to make an expanded edition, published in 1968, under the title The Dehumanization of Art and Other Essays on Art, Culture and Literature .

This survey ranges over such themes as the mathematics of ideal proportions, the problem of representing ugliness, the fascination of the exotic and art for art's sake. Along the way, the text examines the intersection of standards of beauty with Christian belief, notions of the Sublime, the philosophies of Kant and Hegel, and bourgeois culture. More than 300 illustrations trace the history of Western art as it relates, in the broadest sense, to the topic of beauty.
Yet despite its wealth of information, History of Beauty is an odd and unsatisfying book. Beginning with ancient Greece and ending with a too-brief chapter on "The Beauty of the Media," the text focuses exclusively (and unapologetically) on the Western world. Ultimately, it seems that "beauty" serves simply as a sexy peg on which to hang an abbreviated history of Western culture. Readers expecting a sophisticated treatment of the subject will be surprised at the textbook-like design, with numbered sections and boldfaced words keyed to small-type excerpts from writings by thinkers ranging from Boethius to Barthes. The main narrative (or perhaps the translation from the Italian?) can be ponderous and awkward. Only nine of the 17 chapters were written by Eco; the remainder are by lesser-known Italian novelist Girolamo de Michele. Es ist eine gute Weile her, daß ich Immanuel Kants Kritik der Urteilskraft (1790) gelesen habe. Beim neuerlichen Reinschauen aber erfaßt mich wieder der Wortstrudel der Kantschen Syntax und Begrifflichkeiten, der das Hirn nach nur wenigen Sätzen seiner linguistischen Funktionalität zu berauben scheint. Spätestens beim ersten Umblättern stellt sich jenes Aha-Gefühl ein, das einen sonst nur beim Anblick asiatischer Sprachsysteme befällt, beim Lesen eines deutschen Textes aber an den Rand des Wahnsinn bringen kann.
Wer nun gleich aufgibt, erspart sich zwar eine Menge Lesearbeit, beraubt sich zugleich aber einer ungemein spannenden Lektüreerfahrung. Kant begreifen heißt, sich auf seine Sprache einlassen. So nähert man sich fast zwangsläufig einer zentralen Idee dieser dritten großen kritischen Schrift. Denn, sagt Kant, das Wesen des Geschmacks liegt darin, daß er ohne das Interesse am Objekt des Urteils auskommt. Ästhetisches Urteilen ist interesseloses Wohlgefallen (oder Mißfallen), der Zweck bleibt außen vor. Will heißen: Die Bewertung der Qualität der "Kritik der Urteilskraft" steht vollkommen außerhalb der Frage, ob die Quälerei irgendetwas bringt. Schließlich lasse sich über das Erhabene und Schöne nicht streiten, "und sofern kann man nicht sagen: Ein jeder hat seinen besonderen Geschmack".
Das große Rätsel dieses Werks bleibt das Paradox zwischen allem Anfang Ästhetischen Empfindens im Subjektiven und einem "Gemeinsinn", der es einem erlaubt, das eigene Schönheitsempfinden mit anderen zu teilen. Und die Einsicht in dieses seltsame Verhältnis sorgt für die intellektuelle Lust, die einem diese Erkenntnis (und jede andere etwas komplizierte auch) vermitteln kann.
