A detailed, almost daily, record giving an accurate and authentic narrative of over two years in the life of a common sailor before the mast in the American merchant service of the early 1800s. The book is written in journal fashion in the words of an ordinary sailor on the brig "Pilgrim" on her voyage from Boston, round Cape Horn to the western coast of North America. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
