Book summary

Being born in a family of south Indian Brahmin intellects and nurtured by the ever resonant, multicultural diversity of Bombay I was or rather we were completely cut off from our roots. The problem of a resilient city like Bombay is that it paints you in its own shades and makes you indistinguishable from others. It is an amalgam of many religions, languages, and cultures. You may have originally come from any state but once you have lived in Bombay for as long as I have, you become a Bombayite. After I paid part of my debt to the city, which has nurtured my dreams, in the form of a book on her architecture and evolution, I longed to see the birthplace of my ancestors. I longed to study the way they had lived, their customs, and their architectural genius. This project was born partly out of this longing and partly out of my interest in a rendezvous with the past. The aim of this project is an interpretative understanding of the sacred and royal temple cities of south India. It would focus on the liturgical texts, history, art and iconography, temples and religious artifacts, monuments as well as rituals, social traditions and cultural values. It is not possible to study-temple architecture without understanding the reciprocities and relationships between ritual and temporal life and their detailed embodiment in architectural settings.
