Book summary

A collection of articles proposed by Foner and Marable. There were 24 articles submitted for consideration, dealing with various topics. With my advice and that of two advisors it has been agreed that only articles pertaining to African American history and race relations be included. Foner and Marable have written a brief preface, Herbert Shapiro of the University of Cincinnati has written a biographical sketch, Clay Carson of the University of California, editor of the Martin Luther King Papers, has written 'an appreciation', with a brief foreword by Aptheker's Daughter.Publication was approved by the Internal Review Committee in November 2002 and the manuscript was accepted by the Press Board in May 2003 (It took forever for the manuscript to be provided on a disk and we also waited until recently for Marable to write the preface as had been agreed. Foner finally did it himself). Since the meeting in June at which the proposal was accepted, I have received an okay from the author of the introduction and have written to the editors of the journals and book publishers which still exist which published articles that might be in copyright. None responded and I feel we are safe in proceeding. [via]
