Like most bridesmaids, the author had a post-wedding problem: what to do with the expensive formal gown now languishing in her closet. With a gold-sequined top and gold lame floor-length skirt, it wasn't an outfit you'd throw on to go to the grocery store. Then again, she thought, maybe it was. Since 1989, Whitlinger has donned her bridesmaid dress at every imaginable opportunity. She has worn her gown for her passport photo, her driver's license, voting, white-water rafting, on a treadmill, skiing, parasailing, scuba diving, hot-air ballooning, and to play volleyball. She has also worn it into the Pittsburgh Steelers' locker room, to an alligator farm in Florida, the White House, and the Eiffel Tower. On every outing, a friend accompanies her to take a photograph documenting the appearance.
