About the book:

"Yearning To Be American" is the sequel to "Beyond Mud And Vines", which depicts the dramatic details of her escape from slavery and brutality in the hills of Puerto Rico in 1947. She was born with a thirst for knowledge, but her parents insisted that school was not necessary for girls, who would never be more than just wives and mothers. Refusing to work all her life on the farm, under rules of drunken parents who often beat her without explanation, she ran away at age twelve.

In Yearning To Be American Sabinas story continues. By age twelve, Sabina decided not to endure any more torture and took off running. She followed the river west. Not knowing that the river wrapped around several mountains, she encountered terrifying obstacles, including almost drowning, and sleeping up on a tree in a pitch-dark jungle.

After three days in the dark forests, jumping over spiders, scorpions, and many other poisoning insects, she reached a city on the oceanfront. Ironically, her white skin, blond hair, and green eyes, which had caused her to be teased and tortured, caught the attention of the manager lady at a sewing factory. Dona Luisa took Sabina under her wing, and gave her more love and help for the next four years than her family had given in her first twelve years of life.
