About the book:

Photoshop for the Web starts being useful as soon as you open it, explaining how to pick palette settings and image options to get the smallest file size for your Web images. Some tips--like setting Photoshop's default background colour to the colour of your site for instant previews--are simple, useful and virtually unknown. The section on optimising photographs is excellent; often the images available for use on Web pages are poor quality, particularly those from digital cameras. With the techniques here you can get stunning results: a violet tint and a flare effect make black objects look more three-dimensional.

The simple tips are just as useful, like making sure not to select any black borders when optimising colours as it distorts the palette. Did you know that the best way to avoid grainy, unfocused images when resizing is to shrink the image 50 per cent at a time and use Unsharp Mask after each step? There are equally invaluable tips and techniques in the sections on creating GIFs, working with transparency, dealing with JPEGs (see exactly how much compression you can apply without pixellating the image), creating background tiles and navigation graphics, turning type into images and getting the most from vector files, laying out whole pages in Photoshop and then slicing them up in Image Ready.

All this is clear and comprehensive, covering Photoshop 4.5 and 5.5: if there is a difference between Mac and Windows commands, you get both. The colour images in the centre section are there for a reason, not just as eye candy. We'd like to see more on PNG but Photoshop doesn't support it as well as we'd like either--and that's about the only thing to complain about here. Every Web designer using Photoshop needs a copy of this excellent book --Penny Jannifer
